And then he spoke the words that sent ice through my veins. “The plagues that have befallen us,” he murmured, “are because of you.” My entire body locked up. Calvin took a step closer. “Kamrynn, the Moon goddess doesn't forgive easily. She doesn’t take injustice lightly. You were wronged. We wronged you. And because of that, we are suffering.”

“Because he was necessary.” Lyra frowned. “Necessary for what?” Ekreth’s eyes moved to her. “The end.” That wasn’t reassuring. At all. The dragon sighed. “You know the stories of the Seven Divine Thrones.” Lyra nodded. Every child knew them. It was about gods who shaped the world, ruled the elements and the gods who had vanished. Mostly. “What people forget,” Ekreth continued, “is that there was once an eighth.” The room became very still. Nyxar leaned forward. “There are only seven in the story.”

"No, it can't be." Ignatius tracked her stare, his jaw clenching. "We slew Vosvak. The plague is broken." His tone was unconvincing. Plagues don't break," Krishna intoned, her voice empty. "They shift. They wait." Her gaze remained fixed on the fissure. It was spreading now, a slash across the sky, its jagged edges bleeding out tendrils of night.
