My breath hitched as my name appeared in delicate, glowing script, right above Aurora’s. The sight made my heart ache and swell simultaneously.

His eyes lit up suddenly. "Shadow writing",he whispered. Layla raised her head and stared at him. "You can read it?" "The pages aren't blank",Xavier explained to her. "A kind of spell has been placed on it. It is called shadow writing" "Well... read it",Layla urged him. "What does it say?" Xavier smiled tenderly at her for a brief second, then he focused his entire attention on the book. He traced his long slender fingers over the blank pages of the book and began to read.

We To say I was apprehensive about opening it up was an understatement. Shadow is known for his erratic bursts of violence from time to time. On the surface, he appeared cool and calm but all that was just a prelude to the main thing, just like a snake slithering underneath the grass. The handwriting was elegant, appearing to be a cursive type with a couple of words printed on it. It seemed to be Shadow's. I abandoned the plans I'd been going over, twirling the paper in my hand over and over while I weighed the pros and cons of the decision I was about to take.

He lunged toward the shadow, his hunter's knife flashing, but his blade passed through the image as if it were smoke. The shadow didn't even flinch.

Tomorrow night, they would cross the shadowline. And they would find out what Black Salt was really hiding. Crossing the Line The woods past the creek had a hush to them. Not quiet—not really. The leaves whispered, the water churned soft against rock, and something unseen always shifted just out of sight. But it was a different kind of hush. One that pressed in around your ribs and made your breath come shallow. They stood at the edge of it now. The shadowline. No one had marked it with a sign. You just knew when you were there. The air changed. Thicker. Wetter. Like something waiting had just opened one eye.

Fenrir launched himself at it without hesitation, transforming mid-stride into his partial wolf form, claws extended, golden eyes blazing. He slashed right through it. But the shadow reformed instantly. Gabriel yelled, “It’s bound to the seal! We have to break the sigil—NOW!” Winter threw a burst of green energy, but the shadow deflected it like a passing breeze. Fenrir fought it, but every hit passed through like smoke while its claws cut through the air dangerously close to him. I watched the shadow drift toward him again— And something in me snapped. The book at my hip throbbed—then burst open in a flare of white light.
