It attacked with Symmetry. With a flick of its wrist, the surrounding scrap metal flew toward it, forming a shimmering, floating boardroom table. The Shadow sat at the head of it, looking down at Leo with a mixture of pity and contempt.

The silver light deepened— Not brighter— But heavier. Older. The Shadow’s expression changed. For the first time— Not curiosity. Not calculation. Something else. “Impossible…” it whispered. --- The Final Line Ethan raised his hand. The battlefield stilled— Not frozen— But aligned. Every ally. Every force. Every movement— In sync. But free. At this point, I wasn't even surprised. I sat cross-legged near one of the large windows, attempting to read. The shadow from earlier lingered nearby, watching me and occasionally drifting from shelf to shelf. I should have been alarmed, but instead, I found myself smiling. Somehow, the strange little creature felt familiar now, like an unexpected friend. Outside, darkness settled over the kingdom, and moonlight spilled across the library floor. I turned another page, then froze. The shadow had moved closer without me noticing. Slowly, carefully, the darkness stretched upward, forming a thin ribbon before wrapping itself gently around my wrist. I stared, and the shadow immediately went still

I mumbled softly to myself as I entered my office and slammed the door shut. I made a beeline for the reserved section of the bookshelf which held all the information I had gathered on the Shadow wolf during my travels across the world. I had been through these books countless times in the past, but it was no surprise that I may have skipped over the parts about mates, since I was sure I’d never have one. Well played Mother Selene! Four hours later I gazed at the back cover of each and every book and scroll that I had about the Shadow wolf and much to my dismay, not a single one spoke even a word about mates.

Matthias stood still and watched as she continued down the path and noticed that she turned around again, seeking one last glance at him before she disappeared from view. I laid my hand over the glass, peering down at the book and reading the Latin words umbra. The book opened beneath the glass when I spoke the word. It flipped to a page with Shade's name on it. There was a tiny baby handprint in blood…my blood, my baby hand.
