He heard me shift under the covers. The space between us was small, but the wall between us was bigger. And it was only day one.

I lie awake for a long time after her breathing evens out, acutely aware of every inch of space between us. And every inch of space that isn't.

She opened them deliberately and took a small step back, and the inch of space between us felt enormous in the way that space between bonded people always felt enormous, noticed and wrong in a way that ordinary distance never did. I let her have it. She needed it and I knew she needed it and so I stood on my side of the barrier and gave her the inch and waited.

I didn’t move away. Neither did he. The room stayed still. Except for the sound of our breathing. And the space between us… slowly closing.

I know he knows. And suddenly, the space between us feels too small. Too quiet. Too full of something neither of us is saying. I don’t move. Neither does he. And there’s nowhere to hide.

Just a man on a floor who had just come through something and was looking at the person who had come through it with him. I looked back. The moment stretched between us thin and full, and neither of us moved, and neither of us spoke, and the distance between our faces stayed exactly where it was. Almost unbearable. And neither of us did anything about it.

RED POV The space between has its own fucking texture. I've been learning it for ten days straight. Ten days since the night I went to his room and the morning after when I sat on my bed telling myself to get my shit together and the evening he stood in my doorway saying my name like it was something sacred before walking away. Ten days of this space between—not pushing, not pulling back, neither of us naming what the fuck is happening between us or what it means to move through it together.

Like he’s been waiting for it. “You feel different,” I say. I don’t think about it before I say it. It just comes out. His gaze stays on me, but something in it shifts. It’s small. I almost miss it. But it’s there. “I can’t explain it,” I add, quieter now. “But you do.” The space between us goes quiet again. Not empty. Just… held. Like there’s something sitting right under the surface, and neither of us is touching it yet.

“No.” “Then why are you surprised?” She turned slightly, meeting his gaze. “I’m not surprised.” “Then what?” “I’m uncomfortable.” That answer was honest. And he saw it. --- “With what?” he asked. She hesitated. Then— “The space.” Lucas frowned slightly. “What space?” “The space between us.” Silence. “You chose him,” he said quietly. “I know.” “So what space are you talking about?” She struggled to explain it. Because it wasn’t obvious.

ETHAN Maya doesn’t stay long, and that's always been the thing I like best about her. The clean edges of it, the unspoken agreement that whatever exists between us begins at my door and ends long before sunrise. It’s uncomplicated and temporary and blessedly free of the kind of emotional excavation that other people seem to crave from intimacy.
