Encouraged by Lian’s reaction, Maria decided to submit the essay to a small literary journal she admired—Sinta, based in Manila. She used a pseudonym: M. Del Fuego. She didn’t want the editors to be swayed by her family name. She wanted the words to stand on their own.
She sent the email late at night, then closed her laptop and tried to forget about it.
Two weeks later, a reply arrived.
Dear M. Del Fuego, We were deeply moved by your submission. Your voice is honest, lyrical, and necessary. We would be honored to publish your essay in our next issue. —Editorial Team, Sinta Journal
