Might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like contests get overhyped for debuts. The ones everyone names—like the Writers of the Future or the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (though that's gone now)—are flooded. You're statistically more likely to land an agent through a cold query than win most of those.

That said, if you're set on contests, I'd look at the 'Debut Dagger' from the Crime Writers' Association. Even being shortlisted carries weight in that genre. The 'First Pages Prize' is also decent because it's just your opening, so less commitment, and feedback can be sharp. Local library or university contests can have better odds, weirdly. I wasted entry fees on a few big ones years ago; the smaller, genre-specific ones felt more constructive.

Honestly, the best 'contest' for a debut in 2024 might be a well-run mentorship program like Pitch Wars or Author Mentor Match. It's not a contest with a cash prize, but the career guidance and industry connection you 'win' are arguably more valuable for getting that first book out there.

I guess my take is a bit mixed. Yeah, they can be a door opener, no question. Seeing that 'winner' or 'finalist' tag on a query letter makes an agent pause for an extra three seconds, and in this business, that's everything. But I've also seen writers get completely derailed for a year, endlessly tailoring pieces to contest guidelines instead of working on the book they actually burn to write. The feedback, when you get it, can be wildly inconsistent—one judge loves your voice, another thinks it's cloying. You're basically gambling your creative energy on a panel's specific taste on a specific day.

I submitted to half a dozen big ones early on, got nothing but form rejections, and felt like trash. Then I placed in a tiny, niche contest nobody's heard of, and that little credential did more for my confidence than anything else. It wasn't the 'prize' that mattered; it was proof I could finish something and send it out. That momentum got me to complete my manuscript. So the impact isn't always the big, flashy book deal. Sometimes it's just the permission slip you give yourself to keep going.

Contests judge what gets a novel noticed, not just the novel itself. A polished first chapter and a solid synopsis that shows you know where your story is headed can matter more than the full manuscript in the early rounds. They’re looking for confidence in the pitch as much as the prose.

Formatting is a silent killer. I’ve seen guidelines ask for double-spaced Courier, specific margins, a word count in the header—ignore those details and your entry gets tossed before a judge reads a word. It’s brutal, but it’s their first filter for professionalism.

Theme adherence often separates the pack. If a contest specifies ‘debut literary fiction’ or ‘speculative thriller,’ sending a cozy mystery, no matter how good, is a waste of the entry fee. They’re curating a specific shelf, and your book needs to fit on it.

The opening pages need to establish voice immediately. Judges plough through stacks; a character with a distinct attitude or a situation with immediate, tangible stakes cuts through the noise. A slow-burn atmospheric start might work for readers, but in a contest, it’s a risk.
