The engine was still running, and the privacy partition was raised between the driver and us. I hadn’t noticed the car stop. The last few minutes had passed with my mind trapped somewhere between Nessa, Vanessa, and the toxicology result that had no business pointing me toward a dead woman. Vanessa had been half-asleep in my bed, twelve years ago, reading one of those strange medical articles she liked to collect, her hair all over my pillow and a pen between her fingers.
