I dropped the ledger and stood up. "I need to get out of here," I mumbled to myself, and I almost ran from the room. ~ I found uncle Kian and beta Albert near a black van parked behind the pack house. The sun was fully up now, making the devastation look harsh and real. "That must be where the woman is," I said, more to myself than them. As I got closer, I signaled to Albert. He pulled open the van's rear doors. Inside, sitting up against the wall, was a woman. Her hands were bound, her hair was a mess, and there was a bruise on her temple. Her eyes wide with fear, but at least there was no defiance there.

Van hated the woman for abandoning them and putting her in such a grave and humiliating position. She barely registered that the car was no longer moving until Ron pulled the door open. ''We're here ma'am.'' She stepped out and offered a weak smile. They climbed the steps to the white oak door and waited while Ron punched the doorbell, once, twice, until finally it was pulled open and a small middle aged woman appeared. When her eyes landed on Ron, they lit up. "Ron, I thought you were on your way home, what happened?'' her question sounded like a reprimand and Van wondered who he was to her; his mother? His aunt?

When it dawned on her what was really happening, she tried to scream, but the van was soundproof and the walls were padded additionally to further muffle the sounds of screams. A tear streaked down her eyes as her brain kept racing to grasp the severity of the situation at hand. She's being kidnapped! How many women have these men snatched off the street with their skillfully built van, obviously built for the exact purpose they were now carrying out. "Get in the back with her, damnit!" The van driver barked from the front seat.

My heart was racing too fast. I turned back around, and everything went black. The air was cold against my skin. I was blindfolded, wrists tied, ankles aching. I didn't know how long I'd been in the van. I just knew I wasn't with Ramon or my dad anymore. I should've never left them. The van jerked to a stop. Doors slammed. Footsteps. The back creaked open, and I was pulled out roughly. "Careful!" a woman snapped. Her voice was sharp, almost annoyed. "She’s no good to me dead."

She feels a knife being scraped across the back of her ear and she feels the tears start to fall, a man’s voice, not Sansom’s she notes, “Good, let’s go. We need to meet the boss out front, then we’ve got a long way to go before we get where he wants to go, especially as he wants to go on the small roads. It’s going to take forever.” She’s lying in the back of a van, flat on the metal bed at the back. The woman is sitting next to her, and the man closes the doors and gets into the driver’s seat. She decides to stay quiet, hoping that they’ll let something else slip. She’s also not sure if she’s able to speak yet. The woman hums, “Those drugs are strong; she went down quick.” The guy chuckles

"I put four men on her. My own. Off any roster Vance ever touched." A pause I felt in my teeth. "Two in the car at the west entrance report she never came out the west doors. They were watching the doors, exactly like you said. She didn't come through them." Naomi's control cracked one hairline. "Malik. The two inside, the two in the stacks, they're not answering. I've got a campus PD call coming in on the scanner right now. Witness saw a woman pulled into a gray panel van outside a side service door on the west face, two-forty, fought hard, van went north on the connector. Partial plate. And the library cameras-"

I don’t think I can stand another blow. The woman finally lifts her heel. “Cheerio,” she says lightly, as if we’ve just wrapped up afternoon tea. “See you again soon.” I fucking hope not. Mel drapes herself over me protectively, teeth gritted, but the woman’s already sliding into the van. The bitch lifts her phone to her ear. “It’s done!” Only that. “Okay, I’ll tell them.” She glances back at us. “The Old Man sends his regards.” With a flick of her hand, she orders, “Let’s go, fellas. Take the car — it’s yours.”

The engine was still running, and the privacy partition was raised between the driver and us. I hadn’t noticed the car stop. The last few minutes had passed with my mind trapped somewhere between Nessa, Vanessa, and the toxicology result that had no business pointing me toward a dead woman. Vanessa had been half-asleep in my bed, twelve years ago, reading one of those strange medical articles she liked to collect, her hair all over my pillow and a pen between her fingers. She had tapped the page and said, almost lazily, that if she ever needed to kill a man, she’d choose that one.

I sniffled. “No one's dying today. You should all relax,” I knew better than to trust the words of a criminal, but we had no other choice than to trust them. Just as I retracted my claws and began exhaling heavily, they grabbed onto the woman's shoulder, pulling her out of the van. The woman screamed with all her veins out. She held onto the men and continued begging for mercy, but what they did next surprised me. “Ahhh!” They hushed her, placing her on her feet.

, she made a shooing gesture with her hand at the man. About twelve other people emerged from the crowd of people, looking so innocent but green eyes knew better. “Twelve of you? Really? What am I? The hulk?”, she scoffed and just then a van pulled around. The man pulled his gun and aimed it at the woman. “I said, unhand him”, he pulled the safety of the sleek weapon. A woman approached them, holding a wailing child the same time someone from the van dragged an unconscious king of hearts into the van.
