I gave the driver the address and settled back, letting the anticipation build like a slow burn. We were meeting at Jamal's condo today. Jamal is a black guy, 6 ft tall, almost as well-built as Troy and was perhaps the cutest amongst them, while Alex is white and just as tall. I took the elevator up and knocked on the door. Jamal opened it for me. He smiled and hugged me as he let me in. Troy, Alex and Ken were already there. I walked up to all the guys, giving them all a nice, tight squeeze. There was a pause, “never too busy for you.” “Good,” I said, “put me on for the late show.” “The late show?” he repeated. “Yeah,” I said, lighting a cigarette with one hand and walking straight through traffic like I had a death wish, “I’m giving the rawest, most unfiltered show this club has ever fucking seen, get the lights, get the booth, get the cash ready. Hazel’s back.” I heard him smile through the phone, “that’s my girl.” “I want glitter, I want smoke, I want chaos, I want the poles polished.”

He went straight for the claw machine, and I had no choice but to follow. "Which one do you want?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Can you handle it? What if you don't get anything? As far as I remember, the claw machine here is rigged," I teased with a smirk. "Tsk, I can handle it," he boasted, raising his arms in front of his chest. "Let's see..." I smirked challengingly as I dared him. He inserted a token into the claw machine and manipulated the controls. He positioned the claw over a penguin stuffed toy and, when he tried to grab it, the claw immediately let go. I couldn't help but burst into laughter at his irritated expression.

And the thought of possibly not being able to see or speak with James again sank in. It was nice talking to him, at least, but I wish I could again. Not just once but multiple times. I stared at the TV, absentminded but listening to the announcer’s voice. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and all you fashion-minded folks tuning in from coast to coast! This is ‘Fashion Forward’, your weekly window into the world of style, elegance, and everything en vogue!” The screen flashed and transited into the logo of the TV station on display with a short music bliss.

"Were you having hallucinations from being high? Why were you still thinking about me? You're disgusting, Caleb." She tossed the journal straight into the trash can in the corner of the room.

Apparently, today made the cut. I plopped everything on the coffee table and grabbed the remote. “Okay, Depressing or chaos?” “Chaos,” Macey said instantly. “Put on something terrible so we can yell at it.” I smirked. That, I could do. I queued up this cheesy dating show with way too much glitter, fake eyelashes, and egos big enough to be their own cast members. For a while, it was perfect. Stupid. Loud. Comforting. Macey kept pausing the show to make dramatic gasps and roast the contestants. Liam’s quiet commentary from the corner had me howling. And me? I just let myself laugh. Really laugh. Like I hadn’t in what felt like forever.
