His Majesty’s Captive
I sat before him, folding my legs under each other as he continued to jingle the bells, shaking his head while his lips muttered incantations I couldn't understand.
He stopped the bells and turned his head. When I tried to ask what he saw, he raised a finger, silencing me.
"Tell me," I muttered impatiently, slipping my fingers into my dress pocket and pulling out a sack of coins. I shook them for him to hear, then threw them on the floor before him. "There's more where that came from."
"Your Ladyship," he began, "fear not, for your destiny cannot be swapped. The three crows mean death—not for you, but for someone special whom you despise."
