River shouts from across the field, where one of the sheep has decided that the vegetable patch is its new home. “I’m coming!” I yell back. The second sheep makes a sharp turn, nearly colliding with me before darting away again, absolutely determined to make this as difficult as possible. “Why are they so fast?” Rain groans somewhere behind me, still half-covered in mud. “Because you’re slow,” Sienna calls back, not even looking up from her recording. One of the sheep—a particularly aggressive-looking one with horns, I’d name that one Lucifer—decides to test the fence integrity by ramming it repeatedly with its head.

They were tearing into the raw carcass of a winter elk, their long, yellowed teeth visible as they snapped at each other over the meat. On a large wooden splitting block near the center shack sat my father’s iron box. The blue silk wrapping had been torn into shreds, scattered across the bloody snow like blue flower petals. A tall, heavily scarred alpha wolf, his chest covered in a lattice of old silver-burn marks was holding the ancient sheepskin parchment of the border treaty, his filthy fingers tracing the golden seal at the bottom of the page.

The one that leads them is a she-wolf, a bitch from the seventh hell. The man in the green cloak said, "I heard how this hellwitch walked into a village one day . . . a market day, people everywhere, and she walks in bold as you please and tears a baby from his mother's arms. When the tale reached Lord Mooton, him and his sons swore they'd put an end to her. They tracked her to her lair with a pack of wolfhounds, and barely escaped with their skins. Not one of those dogs came back, not one."

She does not need anything more stress to add to her worry. Alpha Erick waits until Luna Kate, and Alanis are gone. Then he pats me on the arm. "Come on, there is one thing about these wolves that is not like us," Alpha Erick says. I follow him into the house where Walter is lying on the floor, dead, covered in blood. He stands over Walter waiting for something.

The trio went beyond even Cameron’s heightened hybrid hearing. One of the zombie sheep had squirmed its way towards him. Cameron looked down in surprise and gave it a kick with his boot, knocking its head clean off its neck. It flopped to the ground, fully dead. “Gross,” Cameron muttered and rubbed his boot on the grass to clean it of the blood and gore left behind. The sheep was fresher than those around it and had been inexpertly skinned. “You are werewolf and vampire,” the red-haired woman had descended the hill whilst he had been distracted, her footfalls so silent that it wasn’t until she spoke that he realized that she was there, and almost jumped out of his own skin in alarm.

The Officer, declaring the commencement of her interrogation as Adrain too took his seat at the table, she said, “In review, for those of you not present previously; the witch named Tilla has been found to harbor magic of an undisclosed nature. Following her refusal to cooperate with superior officers of this camp, we call this examination.” One of Officer Swelhlem’s secretaries seen scribbling notes furiously to one side of the room, she paused to allow him time to finish before continuing, “Hunter Fledge, it was you who arrested said Witch. I could have bitten my tongue off right then when I realized I was only digging a deeper hole for myself by the glare Valerie gave me. Luckily, Amelia came back, holding a finger over her lips. “Ava is sleeping, so please try to keep it down.” We all nodded our heads, and Amelia sat down beside Layla, pulling the book closer to her and opening it up to a page that was marked by a pink sticky-note. “This spell is the one the witch leader used to invoke the powers of the wolf. It says here that in order for a witch to gain permanent powers which include shape-shifting on their own free will, they need to acquire the scalps of three true blooded Alphas.”

Her words flowed like a mix of poetry and spellwork, it felt so strange listening to those words: “Night and day, black and white, I call for balance in the German night. What soars, what dives, what floats with ease, Now waggle back to me, I plea. Lend your aid, let truth take form, Restore the balance, calm the storm.” It half-made sense, but not really? Witchery clearly wasn’t my thing. “What was that—” I began to ask, but Walda hissed, “Shhh!” That’s when I heard it: Waddle-waddle, tipper-tapper. “What the hell?” was all I could say before Walda shushed me again. To my shock, two black-and-white swans waddled toward her, squawking as if greeting her.

Once upon a time, she adored Athena, her dislike for Sienna almost causing her to get sent away from the pack for a short while after Athena had fled. But now, it was the other way round. Something had…changed about her exponentially. “Thanks for your concern, Nathan. I would see you later” I patted him on the shoulder as i walked out of my office. My nose caught onto Athena’s scent, the need to see her and touch her stronger than anything I had ever felt before. My wolf did something it had never done before then; it whimpered with need. Because, as the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If the witches are teaming up with wolves once again, I need to hurry and speed up my plans. I was keeping a low profile and building up my own pack. I guess this little witch is what I need for my plans. Maybe having her as a mate won’t be so bad after all. *** Hana’s POV
