I’m going to live the life you thought you were giving me, while you rot in hell. Black spots danced across my vision. The fire in my chest was turning into an icy vacuum, pulling my soul toward the floor. I could hear Marcus laughing in the distance, oblivious to the fact that his world was ending twenty feet away. I forced my eyes to stay open, forced my shattered nervous system to give me one last surge of defiance. I reached out, my fingers catching the hem of her dress, staining the bright yellow fabric with the dark smudge of my desperation. "Lurii," I rasped, the words tasting like copper and bile. My voice was a ghostly shadow of itself, but the promise behind it was absolute.

His head bows, hand pressed to the bridge of his nose like the weight of the world rests there. I linger in the doorway, whispering before I can stop myself. “Are you okay?” He doesn’t move. His voice is low, flat. “Go to bed, Ariana.” “That’s not an answer.” He lifts his eyes to mine. And for the first time, there’s no mask ,just exhaustion, raw and unguarded. “Do you really want the truth?” he asks. “Yes.”

His forehead on our hands and my hand on his head and the bond full and warm between us and the sun moving across the steps. When he lifted his head his eyes were red and wet and clear and the gold was soft and Ruin was settled and he looked at me and I looked at him and the silence between us was clean and open and still in a way it had never been before. I reached behind me and pulled the mask out of my pack and held it in my hands. The leather was worn and cracked and the ash binding was fading and the smoke was thin and old. "This mask saved my life," I said. "The Masked Demon. The woman who walked into plague camps and pulled rogues out of caves and slept in the dirt and never cried."

“Perhaps. But silly talkatives have a way of being heard when they shouldn’t. You, of all people, should know that.” The words struck, sharp and deliberate. Memories flickered.. memories I buried so deep I’d sworn they were dead. I flinched before I could stop myself. Her hand slowly tapped my shoulder, deceptively gentle, cool as river stone. “Calm yourself,” she purred. “The night is young. Loose ends will be tied before we initiate our plan.” Her promise should have soothed me. Instead, it burned, searing the edges of my ribs. My eyes flicked back to the mirror. And for the first time that evening, the perfection fractured. My reflection no longer gleamed with flawless beauty but shimmere

My name, my mask, my pride; all shattered on the marble floor. And I couldn’t stop it. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t stop it.

I just lay in the dark, staring up at the ceiling as my head was racing around. What had I done? And my horrified mother just kept on replaying in my mind. “You did it. You’re back.” But then he noticed the shards scattered on the ground. Each piece still displayed its face—smiling, blinking, and whispering. From the cracks of the broken house, a shadow seeped in. The maid's voice emerged from the darkness, softer now, and almost gentle: “You broke the routine. Now the real cage begins.” The shards lifted off the ground and swirled through the air. They fused again—not as a mask this time, but as a door—a door made of faces, each one whispering and smiling.

"Show them. Show them who you really are. I want to see their faces when they realize how perfectly they have been played." The figure reached up slowly, deliberately, drawing out the moment. The mask finally came off. And my world shattered. “Nooooooo!!”

But then his fingers curled around the edge, and he removed it. Everything stopped around me. My heartbeat, my breathing and my thoughts. The mask fell away. And the world shattered beneath my feet. I stared at him in complete shock. At that face, that familiar face I had loved, missed, cried for. The face I thought I might never see again. My lips parted soundlessly. No. No… My vision blurred instantly again, but this time not from grief, but disbelief. Because sitting in front of me—holding me—looking at me with those same eyes—
