Her hands were clenched into fists and her face held a powerful gaze. However, to the elders, she looked like a small ferocious kitten. In the next second, Ariel burst into a peal of hilarious laughter and most of the elders followed suit. Their laughter sounded like mockery to Nicole's ears and she felt her eyes brim with tears. However, she controlled her emotions. She couldn't let herself be seen as weak, by crying. "Enough!" Bryce shouted banging his large palms on the table with an angry look in his eyes. The whole room came to an abrupt silence while most of the elders had uncomfortable looks on their faces.

Soon, the sound of footsteps behind them gradually faded away. The fake native finally stopped and looked back at her. Under the dark moonlight in the rustling shadows, Nicole was completely drenched and muddied, and her face streaked with tears. It took her less than thirty seconds to go from silence to sobbing, to weeping, then to full-out bawling. Nicole finally had the strength to let go of the tears that she had held back over the past few days. Her cries were hysterical, but they were drowned in the rain, so they did not seem out of place at all.

Someone called Scarlett as she was leaving Carter’s office, and she just smiled and waved. Scarlett answered on the other line because it did not register the number on her phone. (“Hello, Scarlett?”) Scarlett frowned as she recognized the voice. She resisted for a second before melting into me, her face buried in my shirt. “You’re not pathetic,” I murmured into her hair. “You’re strong. Stronger than anyone I know. But you don’t have to carry this alone anymore.” She’d been carrying her father’s burden for years alone. I couldn’t let her continue to live like that. She was only twenty-two. She wasn’t responsible for the life of a man pushing forty. She didn’t respond. Her shoulders started shaking, and then the dam broke. Nicole cried raw, wrenching sobs that shook her entire body. She clung to me like I was the only thing left in her world, her fingers digging into my back as she fell apart in my arms.

I asked, concerned about how she was trying her possible best not to pant. "Yes, yes I'm fine." "Mom?" "Yes?" She chuckled with someone in the background. "I'm nervous." "C'mon, don't be." She sounded like she had something in her mouth. "You'll have fun, trust me. Damon is there, remember?" "Thanks mom." "I'll- I'll call you tomorrow." She said, almost like a moan. "Goodnight Nicole," Mr Chris said and the call ended. Wait, were they doing something funny?
