Although as vampires we were meant to blend in, Vanessa never got that memo. She stood leaning up against the door frame talking to Mum and Dad. As they moved out of the way, she sauntered in. She was wearing black leather trousers with a matching jacket and a low cut red tee tucked into her waistband. She was already tall for a woman, at least five foot eleven, but her four-inch heels made her tower over even my dad. Her raven black hair came down below her shoulders and hung loosely. By far her best feature was her ocean-blue eyes, framed by naturally long black lashes.

No, these steps were deliberate, getting closer with every click. I glanced over my shoulder and immediately groaned internally. Vanessa. And her crew. Vanessa always looked like she’d just stepped off a magazine cover, even when she was just walking down the street to terrorize people. Today, it was a sleek black crop top with some faint shimmer, paired with leather pants that looked like they had been sewn directly onto her body. Her heeled boots clicked as she walked, her dark hair flowing behind her like she was some kind of movie villain.

Maya didn’t answer and that was answer enough. Vanessa leaned in slightly. “You need a night out.” Maya raised a brow. “I go out.” “Not like this,” Vanessa said, her smile turning a little more mysterious. “I’m talking about somewhere… different.” Maya crossed her arms. “Different how?” Vanessa’s voice dropped just slightly. “A private club.” Maya frowned a little. “What kind of club?” Vanessa smirked. “It’s called The Velvet Cage. One where women go to… forget.”

Chaos made them make mistakes. If the venue was evacuated... if Aurora was panicked... she might run to him. She might lead Vanessa straight to the "safe house." Vanessa smiled. It was a cold, rictus grin. She opened the car door. And then, she was blinded. High beams. A wall of white light, sudden and searing, flooding the parking lot. Vanessa froze, her hand on the duffel bag. A car had pulled up directly in front of her, blocking her exit. A black Maybach.

Soft music hummed in the background, barely loud enough to cover the tension thickening the air. Vanessa sat on the velvet couch, one leg crossed lazily over the other. Her makeup was bold....dark liner accentuating her sharp eyes, wine-colored lipstick smudged just enough to suggest recklessness rather than carelessness. Her dress clung to her curves, short and daring, the kind she would never dare wear inside the Hale mansion. She had snuck out without anyone knowing, carefully preserving her good-girl image while spending the night indulging her wilder side. “What the hell is wrong with Lucas?” she snapped, her voice cutting through the room as she glared at the man standing opposite her.

"LET ME TELL YOU YOUR PUNISHMENT! YOU'LL NEVER HAVE A HAPPY ENDING! YOU WANNA KNOW WHY? BECAUSE VANESSA WILL DIE JUST LIKE IN THE PAST, AND THE ONE THAT WILL KILL HER IS YOU! HAHAHAHA... HOW LOVELY!" After she said those words my vision went completely dark. Everything went dark and it feels like the darkness was trapping me inside. I walked and ran as fast as I can aimlessly but there seems to be no end to this darkness. Then suddenly, I felt a warm and familiar feeling on my hands and when I looked at it, I was choking Vanessa with her tears streaming from her eyes.

“Don’t answer that.” She did anyway. Vanessa sauntered in wearing black satin and the smile of a woman who knew exactly how to set bombs and smile while they detonated. “Miss Lane,” she purred. “You really should change your locks.” Zara didn’t flinch. “You really should mind your business.” Alec stood between them, tension sizzling. “What do you want, Vanessa?” Vanessa’s red lips curved. “What I’ve always wanted. You.” Zara scoffed, arms folded. “Well, he’s not available. And neither is my company.”

“Watch everything. Trust no one.” My pulse was deafening. Fear tangled with desire, nerves alive, every part of me alert. “Who… who is that?” I whispered. “Someone who shouldn’t exist here,” he said, voice low, dangerous. “And someone who can’t touch you—not while I’m near.” The figure stopped, hesitated, then retreated, vanishing into the fog. My chest heaved with adrenaline and fear. I glanced up at him, eyes wide, heart racing, and for the first time, I saw vulnerability there—something dark and jagged beneath the calm, magnetic surface.

I had no desire to go over to her desk where she was making notes on some animal undergoing an operation. Vanessa finished up and walked over to the kitchenette to grab one of the beers. Not for the first time I envied her slim physique. Vanessa was beautiful without trying. Her dark chocolate skin was completely flawless, unlike my pale complexion that flushed red at the slightest temperature change. She kept her curly hair short, which allowed the stunning angles of her face to shine. Her large dark eyes looked disapprovingly at the cheap beer I’d bought. “I know you don’t splash out, but this is even crapper than the stuff you normally bring.” She made a face, but still took a large swig.

’ ‘Who—’ He glanced up, and the glee vanished. Vanessa stepped through the entrance, wearing an all-white suit that made her look like a ghost. Her blonde hair was scraped back, her skin pale enough to make an undertaker proud, and—because subtlety was never her strong suit—there was a bloodstained bandage wrapped around her left wrist. Well. That answered the question of whether my social media post had worked. ‘Christ,’ Cary muttered beside me. His entire body stiffened. ‘What the hell is she doing here?’
