I walked away from his tent and began to take the narrow path which passed the river, down to the small town next to the campsite. Getting to the river, I found someone swimming in it. I knew it was Prince Randall. I didn’t bother stopping because I wasn’t ready to say a word to him so I just kept on walking. After minutes of walking, I got into the small town and surprisingly quickly figured out where the bookstore was located. I walked in and saw there was no one except the bookseller. A man who looked like he was in his mid-fifties. “Hello, good day, Ma’am. What book would you love to read?” He asked, moving away from the counter and approaching me.

“I’m opening a bookstore.” Silence dropped over the room like a heavy blanket then Ruth burst out laughing so hard she nearly choked. “A bookstore,” she repeated. “In this town?” “Yes,” he said proudly. “Right on Main Street. Small, cozy, lots of used books, local writers, coffee in the corner and comfy chairs the whole thing.” I stared at him, stunned. “You already did this?” I asked. He shrugged. “I put a deposit down before I came back I didn’t want you talking me out of it.”

From the outside it looked quiet, with a signboard that read Cedar Alley Books. Inside, there were quite a lot of shelves packed too closely together. A few chairs surrounded a table, as if prepared for people who wanted to read. But there were no other customers inside. Maybe because it was still too early. “Can I help you?” the shopkeeper said, a young man with glasses who looked around my age. A feather duster was still in his hand and a rag tucked into his pants. It seemed like the store had only just opened. “I’m looking for a book about cooking.” I added quickly, “For beginners.”

Baxter’s books. The wooden sign was cracked now, faded from time and rain. The windows were fogged with age. The CLOSED sign hung crookedly on the door. But if I closed my eyes, I could still remember the way the place smelled – like ink, dust, old books, and dreams. The old man had probably sold the book or stashed it somewhere safe. She approached a vendor hawking mismatched porcelain and rusted tin toys. “The guy with the books—leather-bound, big ones. Where is he from?” The vendor gave her a toothy grin, clearly uninterested. “Who knows? He comes and goes when he feels like it. Not much of a scheduler, that one.”

I opened the door slowly as I walked into the antic book store, it was a bit dusty, like no one has been here for a while. I walked over to the front desk as I ran my hands through the dust and I found another note on the table:
