**Chapter 73: Quiet Between Storms** The castle exhaled. *** Not in relief. Not fully. *** But enough. *** The war had not ended. The threat had not passed. The sky still felt watched. *** But for the first time since the world had shifted— nothing was actively breaking. *** And in that fragile stillness— Raven found herself alone. *** ### The Quiet Room The chamber was dim, lit only by low candlelight and the faint glow of the city beyond the windows. The armor had been set aside. The weight of command, for a moment, had nowhere to rest but inside her.

Raven’s POV Once my sisters dressed me in black and red leather armor, and they finished styling my hair, I walked downstairs to see my devastatingly handsome mates waiting for me. I smiled, seeing Jonathan laying back into Osric’s lap with Gunnar and Roan on his chest while Embry sits under his legs watching them in awe. My mind wanders seeing them all shirtless with our pups, looking as delicious as ever. I place my hand over my navel and close my eyes, wanting to grow our family despite the sadness I feel for the daughter we lost.

My toes were numb, and my fingers were red and blotchy as I clutched at the straps around my shoulders. Our haven was right in front of me, as I inhaled a long breath of air, and tried to thump loud enough on the gate, feeling tingles run all through my hand. “Who’s out there?” A guard called out from the other side. “Ra ..Ra…” I tried to call back, but my throat was sore and parched, I could barely hear it myself over the rain. “IT’S RAVEN AND DANTE. WE NEED HELP NOW!” Dante shouted, “Hold on, hold on, Raven, we’re here now”. His voice fazed in and out, and I started to lose all sense of where I was, feeling myself about to topple over.

A guard. Raven signaled for me to stay low, then slipped into the darkness. She was a shadow, moving silently behind him. Before he could react, she had her arm around his throat, cutting off his air. The guard thrashed, reaching for his radio. I stepped forward, snatching it away before he could press the alarm. His struggles weakened, then stopped altogether. Raven lowered him to the ground and exhaled. “Still got it.” I gave her a look. “You were worried?”

he spat, "it looks like we need to take you by force." His druid guards lunged forward, dragging Raven back with a firm grip. Her heart raced, but she refused to show fear. Instead, anger simmered beneath her skin, and she closed her eyes, gathering every ounce of her power. A pulse of energy rippled through the air, and in a blinding flash of white light, the energy surged outward, sending the guards flying back several feet. They crashed to the ground, releasing their hold on her. The gun slipped from Victor’s hand as he was thrown onto the ground with a grunt. Raven wasted no time. She dashed toward the weapon, her fingers closing around it tightly as she raised it, steady and unyielding.

Fear made people easier to shape. But Ragnar would not stop. She is avoiding us. Good. No. Not good. She is the enemy. Then why do you keep watching her? I ignored him. The last bell rang through the school. Students flooded the hallways. Voices rose around me. Lockers slammed. Shoes scraped the floor. But through all of that noise, I found Raven at once. She was moving fast down the corridor with her bag pressed against her side. Her head was low. Her steps were sharp. She did not want me near her.

I knew I would feel it when she arrived. Mom kept saying Raven was the one we’d been waiting for, the Warren heir, the girl I was born to protect. I tried not to believe it. We’ve had other girls placed with us before. Other maybes. Other almosts. Every time, I let myself hope, and every time, I was wrong. But the moment Raven crossed the town line, something inside me snapped into place. Guardian magic isn’t loud. It doesn’t spark or glow. It’s subtle, like a compass needle jerking north. A pull under the skin. A thread tightening.

The next week was a very busy one, a lot of shuffling around and trying to get things sorted but somehow we managed to smooth it out as much as possible. The families that decided to stay behind were set to swear their fealty to me on Sunday when I was officially sworn in as Alpha of Ravenfield, a traditional ceremony that was supposed to be performed by the previous Alpha or another blood Ravenfield. With my dad and uncle gone, Gram would be performing the ceremony, she may not be a blood Ravenfield, but she was the closest we had and I was sure that the spirits of the pack would accept her as a suitable replacement.

Andrew Chambers, Delta, always believed that he should and deserved to be a part of the Shadow family and have a higher rank than his lowly Delta position. Deltas were the ones to help the Gamma with training and could move up in Delta ranks, but this was not enough for him. Where did he get this idea from? He got it from his grandfather, James Chambers, one of Elders of the Shadow Mountain pack. James always believed that as an Elder his family deserved the best and to be the best you had to be at the top. Since Andrew was his only grandchild, he would encourage him to get close to the Alpha, Beta and Gamma pups.
