The Wolf's Game
“Easy.”
It bites.
Pain sears through my hand, making me feel queasy. I gasp, but don’t let go. Blood wells between my fingers. The rabbit’s teeth are too sharp. I press it to my chest, whispering through clenched teeth.
“Shh. Stop. I’m not going to hurt you.”
The words come out gentler than I expect. My wolf hums in agreement, recognition stirring deep inside. The rabbit trembles once, twice, then goes still. Its heart races against mine, wild and frightened, but alive.
