She looked toward the closed clinic door like she was confirming privacy, then back to me. “People come to me when they’re hurt,” she said. “Officially and unofficially.” My eyes narrowed slightly. “That’s… an interesting distinction.” “It’s reality,” she replied. I kept my voice light even as my mind sharpened. “So unofficial injuries don’t go in the log?” Elaina’s gaze didn’t flinch. “They don’t always.” “And unofficial injuries,” I said slowly, “would include injuries that don’t look… normal.” Elaina held my stare for a beat too long.

But, I had stipulations. Before I got into those, I pulled up my email and composed a letter to the EC at the bank, describing in as few details as possible what had happened over the last two weeks. Without a medical release, I was unable to work-even though I didn't think a broken arm and a few lingering bruises were reasons to stay home from a desk job, but Dax believed the head injury was.
