It wasn’t falling, not right now, but there was plenty on the ground, and the wind would whip up from time to time and stir it, giving the illusion it was coming down again. I thought about how different things were last year. Across town, Drew Peterson’s little brothers would be going to bed soon, probably asking Santa to bring back their sister. Alice and Steve Cook had lost their only child; Christmas would never be the same for them.

For me, that’s when it rains. Once I got into my apartment, I set my things down and went straight for the shower. The feeling of the water trickled down my body, over my breasts as the steam rose up, engulfing me completely. I washed my hair and then my body; for a moment, I felt good. As long as I stood right here, I wouldn’t have to return home this year. For the past six years, Mom has stayed with me over Christmas, but she put her foot down this year.

It was the first year I didn't have a tree. We'd normally go out as a family and visit one of the Boy Scout tree lots, picking the biggest, fullest tree we thought could fit in my living room. Then we'd decorate it together, Christmas songs playing in the background, and sipping eggnog. We'd spend an eternity untangling the lights, replacing the bulbs that wouldn't work, and replacing the metal hangars on the decorations that needed them. It was an all day affair. Not this year. Not ever again.
