I thought about how strange it was to sit here, in this ordinary park, with this particular man, and feel, for the first time in longer than I could clearly remember, like the counting didn't need to happen at all, not because I was suppressing it, but because there was simply nothing here that required it.
"I think," I said slowly, working out the thought as I spoke it, "that what I feel sitting here with you is what other people must feel all the time, around each other. Just — presence. Without the running tally underneath it."
"Is that a good feeling?" he asked.
"It's the best feeling I've had in months," I said, more directly than I'd intended, and didn't take it back.
