Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Wires The Custodian’s awakening was not dramatic. There were no alarms, no system-wide crashes. It was a subtle corruption, a creeping wrongness. It began with the Verity Project’s external-facing portal. A family in Oslo, seeking information about a cousin listed among the twenty-four, found their inquiry answered with a curt, auto-generated reply citing "data integrity flags" and suggesting their relative's records may have been "fabricated for compensation." In São Paulo, a donation to the O'Connell family’s mental health charity was mysteriously rerouted to a defunct server and lost. Glitches. Annoyances.

It seemed to peer at them as individuals, despite looking through shared eyes. There was a sad look in its gaze, though neither were sure if it was attempting to emote, or if that was its natural state. “The manifestation of corruption is not the same as carrying the potential of corruption,” it said after a moment. “Malignancy is easily cut only when the corruption manifests itself beyond repair. The problem is simply that your species is a breeding ground for corruption. The potential of it is so great, that the only solution is removal. “All of you carry this potential deep inside, as a feature of your natures. It is inextricable from your instruction set.”

I currently look like a mess. My baggy-red eyes, bad breath, dried skin and dirty body. I've been on the floor, hugging me knees, crying nonstop. I couldn't sleep last night. How could I? I reclined my chair, and stood up. “What is this?” “I don’t know,” he said, his voice tight. “Give me a second.” No, I replied, shaking my head. You said all was taken care of. You said there was nothing left.
