Luca's Pov The boy on the stairs coughed, snapping me back to the present. He rubbed a hand across his eyes and sniffed. One of his eyelids dropped lazily and his glasses weren't rimmed red but an odd shade of pink. He wasn't Oliver “Did you draw that?” I asked, my voice coming out a little sharper than I intended and making him flinch. He blinked up at me with one eye wide then slowly looked down at the drawing in his hand. He pointed at it and looked at me again. “That, yes. Did you draw it?” I asked again, coming closer. He pointed to himself and nodded. The kid was mute. It wasn't the same drawing of course. But it was eerily similar. “Come on, get up. Where's your room?” I stretched out a hand to him and he gazed at it distrustfully. “Boss?” Elias said through the earpiece. “What's the status? Where are you? Can't pick you on any of the camera feeds from the third floor.” “I'm not on the third floor.” I whispered back into the receiver. My hand was still ou
Luca's Pov When I woke up again, the house was quiet once more. It was a lot easier to open my eyes and move this time. The woman, Dara, had left the lamp on and the curtains drawn shut. I threw off the covers and got down from the bed. My body felt a little stronger now but my legs still wobbled under me. The room smelled faintly of chicken and...well, vomit. She'd lunged for me when the throwing up started, pushing little Oliver out of the way and shoving my head forward so I threw up on the floor instead. I couldn't remember much after that. I heard her questions of worry and concern before I slipped into the darkness again. There was a plate of a few pieces of hard toast and a cup of water on the table. I grabbed at it and took hearty bites. Plain toast, no jam or butter but it was more food than I'd had in days. I sat on the floor, placing the plate of toast in front of me. The woman was kind. But I didn't trust her. The soup was delicious and the toast must be becaus
Luca's Pov “Hey! Are you okay? Little boy?” The voice came through the void. An echo through space. I could feel my eyelids open slightly but all I could see was a white background. “Can you hear me? Where is your mummy? Are you alone? Where are your parents?” It was a woman. A soft voice. Much like my mother's. My second mother. I tried to reply. Tried to answer her questions but it was hard to speak. Hard to move. I managed something that sounded like a cross between a groan and a squeak. I wasn't sure she could hear any of it. I heard more voices. Muffled ones. I heard someone call for help. Heard someone ask about dialing 911 uncertainly. Might've been the same soft speaking lady. Might've been someone else. I wasn't sure. I tried to listen closely but it was hard. Too hard. I gave in to the darkness. The smell of onion and chicken woke me from my deep slumber. I could also smell something sweet. Like burning sugar. I was awake but it was a struggle to get my eyes
Alex's Pov I turned to find Lizzie's eyes boring into mine as she squatted at the edge of the pool beside me. “Staring? What?” I stuttered. Her face remained impassive as she lowered herself into the pool. Her skin looked even paler now that the clothes were gone. She wore a black bra top and a pair of high waisted, thick swim panties. She had some freakish looking tattoos on her back, upper thighs and a flower tattoo around her belly button that looked out of place amongst the more deadlier drawings. “You know what I'm talking about.” She replied to me before sinking slowly under water. I waited for her to re-emerge. Thirty seconds, a minute. Her black hair fanned out above her, casting a sort of canopy over her form in the water. Two minutes.Three? I wondered about dragging her up in fear that she'd drown but just as I thought that, she lifted herself upwards. Again slowly. No sharp intake of breath or panting to show she had held her breath for a long time. Just a
Alex's Pov I hadn't been to a pool in ages. Public pools weren't something that I particularly liked but I hadn't objected when Ryan brought it up. I was looking forward to seeing him. Isabelle had given me a weird look when I told her I needed to leave but she didn't say anything. Mr Gomez did not follow her example however and hounded me to stay for dessert.Isabelle informed him there was no dessert and he whined about not being able to eat dessert and this led to another back and forth between them so I slipped out while I still had the chance. Ryan offered to come pick me up but I insisted on taking a cab. Much easier than having to wait for him. Recreation centers tend to get a little packed in the evenings, much like cafes. The pool was indoors thankfully. I hated the idea of swimming out in the open where people passing could see. I paid a small fee, then almost got talked into purchasing a membership card by a sweet, petite brunette. Ryan was waiting for me, sitti
Luca's Pov I hesitated. Wrong move as that was all they needed to know I didn't belong in there. I saw the suspicion fill their eyes as they took in the vest and gun by my right side. “I was asked to find a Mr Jenkins. Do any of you two know him?” I asked, infusing as much confidence and intimidation into my voice as I could muster. This seems to keep both of them off balance for only a bit. Or at least one of them, the one standing in front of me. He blinked and stuttered, his hazel eyes filling with something close to apprehension. “Mr Jenkins? Um, I'm not sure…” he began but the other one who'd been sitting at a table cut in, “There's no Mr Jenkins at this hospital.” He stood to his full height. He was taller than I was by only a few inches but he was also very broad. Much like the other two on the ground floor who'd wrestled down the screaming patient, this man was built like a battering ram. The stuttering one was considerably smaller but emboldened by his big col
