BRIDGETTE'S POV

I sat at the dark polished table, the silverware perfectly aligned, and the scent of roasted duck and wine filled the air.

My mother, despite throwing anxious glances towards me, I could not deny how beautifully glowing she looked in the champagne-colored dress that we almost seemed tailored just for her.

A shocking thought crossed through my mind, how long had it been since I'd seen her look this good?

Yes, she did dress up once in a while, but never had I seen her skin look so radiant and her eyes held a hint of something I couldn't place whenever she looked sideways. My eyes followed her gaze, flickered towards the older man sitting beside her, tall, silver-haired a dashing face and an even striking name to booth—Aaron Warner, Founder and ex-CEO of A.R.W the second largest company that dealt with anything and everything, from tech to fashion, ARW was your to go and Aaron had single-handedly created that company from scratch.

Despite his age, his features remained hauntingly beautiful, similar to the man currently sitting by my side, shooting lasers my way, Ryhsand Warner.

If Aaron was the sun, Ryhsand was the galaxy that surrounded it, despite being born into money, he hadn't gone lax, lavishing and spending, instead he'd dived into the company, creating a whole new niche for himself, easily shutting up every critic who had accused him of being under his father's shadow. With a stubborn outlook, he'd proved he was far more than a pretty face.

For all that he had accomplished I respected him, but apart from his drive, he was nothing more than a jerk, and an arse hat who couldn't manage to remove his head out of his arse for a single moment.

My thoughts a

were interrupted by a single clink of glass, my mother sat up straighter and pinned her gaze on me, “ thank you for coming. It really means a lot to have you here,” she said, her eyes flickering towards the dark ball of grumpiness at my side, “the both of you.”

When Rhysand didn't answer, she continued, but not before she reached out for Aaron's hand squeezing it tightly, “We wanted you here to celebrate our special day with us.”

Her words rang through, I didn't acknowledge it, neither does Ryhsand, and as the silence continued I saw my mother signal her soon-to-be husband to speak.

The older version of my boss finally cleared his throat, “We are getting married and we wanted you to know.”

A beat after, I was left stunned when he added nothing to his statement. Was that it? No explanation, nothing?

Margaret seemed to share my thoughts as she nudged him again, giving him a single warning glare. Aaron lifted her palms bringing them to his lips, as he flashed her with a dreamy smile.

“What I meant to say is we–I and the lovely lady Whom I cherish and love are getting married, and we would love for the both of you…” he trailed off, and nodded. “to celebrate with us and become a family.”

Family?

What did that mean?

Confused, I turned to face my mother, her eyes barely glanced my way and I sat up straighter, I was about to ask what they meant by that when he growled, interrupting me.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Rhysand, my boss and current confused partner shot out of his seat. “Dad, no. Tell me this is some twisted joke.”

I ignored his outburst, facing my mom, “What the hell Mom? What do you mean family?”

Margaret reached out for my hand, but I pulled away, my arms clenched.

Margaret looked downright panicked, Aaron just smiled calmly, patting her hands, “It’s not a joke. We’re in love. We wanted you both here to share the moment and hopefully make our family whole.”

I scoffed, wrapping my knuckles on the wood. “In love? With him?” I pointed at Aaron like he had personally offended my entire bloodline. “Mom, are you serious right now?”

“Bridgette, I—”

“No,” I cut in. “This is insane.”

“You think this is insane?” Rhysand snapped, glaring at me. “What the hell are you doing here? Did you plan this? Is this some scheme to get back at me for the meeting? Because if it is, it isn't funny and you aren't winning any gifts.”

I scoffed, “Me? Get over yourself, already. You think I planned this? Please, my mom could do better.”

I caught Aaron looking my way, and I raised my arms, “I'm just saying. No offense but my mom is a catch. This is a bad decision if you ask me.”

His lips twitched at my words before he gave a simple nod.

“Oh please,” Ryhsand snarled. “My father is the real deal. How high can your mother go? This is all you're doing, you probably orchestrated this whole fiasco, manipulating and twisting until you got your way!”

I threw my hands in the air. “Why would I ever want to be your stepsister? Do you hear yourself right now? Being close to you in the office is already more than I can take. Why ruin that?”

“Who wouldn't want to be!” He snapped “This is probably why you've been at loggerheads with me, annoying me, until boom you worm your mother's way into my father's bed.”

I seethed at his words, “How dare you! Your father doesn't deserve my mom, she's a catch, what does your father have going for him? Why would I put her through the pains of marrying into your family and face someone as disagreeable as you!”

My mother gasped. “Bridgette!”

Ryhsand stepped towards me forcing me to look up at him, his lips curled into a snarl.

My heart spiked at the sudden closeness and I found myself leaning into his heart.

“That's enough!” Aaron ordered.

But neither of us was listening. The tension exploded between us, I didn't back down, crossing my arms.

“I don’t know what’s worse,” I said, “the fact that my mother is marrying your father, or that I now have to see your stupid face anywhere else apart from the office.”

Rhysand leaned in, face dark, ready to let out his ire, surprisingly I found myself anticipating his words when a thunderous sound erupted shaking the dining table.

“Rhysand I said that is enough!”

Bridgette "I should be asking you the same question." A strong Italian voice echoed. Never in a million years would I have thought I would find myself in such a position, sandwiched between two devilishly handsome men with high testosterone, playing knights in shining armor. I winced, shifting slightly to accommodate my burning ankle, which was currently bearing the brunt of being jostled around by these two men. Not that they had any idea of my pain, and I admit that was partly my fault. If only I hadn't rushed out of Rhysand's car in a fit of anger. Then I wouldn't have stumbled against a rock and almost fallen face-first into a puddle of murky water. Luckily I had been saved from that frightening ordeal, and it just happened to be by none other than Paul Varlesk, also known as Mr. P. A popular record label manager known for his rich videos looking into the lives of artists, which was mostly a nice way of saying he made fun of them. I'd been so shocked when he'd saved me that

RhysandThe car ride was silent. Bridget had taken my offer to drive to the party, while Thorne rode in front, guiding us to the venue.Despite the joy I had felt when she'd taken my offer to go together, I was beginning to feel a sense of loss. Bridget wouldn't speak to me. She refused to acknowledge my presence and gave me no chance to bring up our earlier discussion.Currently, she sat with her eyes fixed on her phone, scrolling mindlessly through social media. Whenever I tried to broach the subject, she would ignore me or answer me with one-word sentences, giving me no chance to clear the air.The closer we got to our destination, the more panicked I felt. I couldn't brush aside the feeling that she was slipping away from me before she could even be mine. The opportunity to talk soon came when Thorne slowed down and turned into the hotel's parking space. I closely followed, purposely taking my time to find a good spot. Despite the valet sign offering to park, I waved him aside and

BridgetteThe meeting began without any problems thanks to the detailed work done by the staff. I ran through the plans for the contract, our part to be played, and what was expected of Clarkson and Co if they saw fit to take the project. By the time I was done, an hour had passed."And that's all for the project. I believe a collaboration between two giants, such as ARW and Clarkson and Co, will make waves for ages to come," I ended, then walked towards my seat."Thank you, Ms. Hayes, for that wonderful presentation," Rhysand said, holding my gaze for a few seconds longer than necessary before he turned towards Mr. Thorne. "Are there any questions you'd like to have answered, or would that be all?"Thorne leaned into his chair in silence, his eyes closed as though contemplating."Mr. Thorne, is there a problem?" Rhysand asked again, a hint of annoyance in his tone. "Did you not get the full gist, or would you like more time to think about it?"I frowned in disapproval at Rhysand's to

RhysandThorne Clarkson stood before us looking every bit as cocky as I remembered him, dressed in a flamboyant Armani blue suit, a white dress shirt, and a hat of the same color. He looked like a miniature version of his father, though a less smart and more watered-down version."Is now a good time?" he asked with a cocky smile, his eyes fluttering between me and Bridget before resting on our joined hands. "I don't want to interrupt anything. I can always come back."I scowled, my lips parted, ready to tell him to fuck off, when Bridgette snatched her arm away from my grip, her tone steady."Don't be ridiculous, Mr. Thorne," she said with a professional smile. "There's nothing more important than speaking with you. To what do we owe the honor?""Is that so?" Thorne drawled, his eyes darting towards me before looking back at Bridgette."Why are you here, Thorne?" I spat, willing him to disappear as quickly as he had arrived.Like his name suggested, Thorne had been a prickly thorn in

RHYSAND"Ms. Hayes is the exception. Always," I said, my tone sharper than I intended, and Rosa flinched.I didn't bother to apologize, ignoring the flicker of fear that crossed her face as she twisted her fingers tightly."I'm sorry, Mr. Rhysand, I… I didn't know… I thought—""I'm not paying you to think so deeply," I cut through her excuse coldly, letting my disappointment darken my words. "I thought you were smarter than this, Rosa. It appears I was wrong."She flinched under my brutal words, and her eyes grew red and wet as though she was about to cry, but the moment didn't come as she quickly closed her eyes and exhaled. When she looked up at me, gone were her impending tears, replaced with a determined look. "You are right, Mr. Rhysand. I didn't think. I assure you it won't happen again."I shook my head, secretly impressed by this new Rosa. Gone was the overtly crybaby that always managed to annoy me, replaced by a much stronger version of herself. I liked it."I really didn't

RhysandEvery once in a while, I am left speechless by my actions. Just like today, I had overslept.I, Rhysand Warner, had overslept, and no one had woken me up. The first thing I saw was sunlight bleeding past my curtains.Shit. I reached for my phone, and another expletive escaped my mouth. Past 9 a.m.I hadn't intended to stay up so late, much less talk to my father for more than five minutes, but last night had been different. For once, we hadn't argued about work or expectations. We'd sat by the pool, sipping aged scotch and talking about trivial things. My childhood, his. Old songs, and even a few stories about how he struggled to take care of me. Then he'd switched to Margaret, his love for her and how amazing she was. I couldn't remember the last time I had seen my father so emotional, so soft, like his marriage to Margaret had been the salvation he needed all along.Strangely, I was happy for him. Margaret was good for him, and I didn't regret the conversation. Not even as I
