The night air was cold against Sonia’s skin as she and Eric left the abandoned wing of the academy behind.

Every shadow felt like it was watching them, every creak of the old floorboards a threat. She tightened her grip on Eric’s hand, her heart drumming against her ribs like a warning.

They had the file now proof of the Cartel’s infiltration, of the academy’s complicity but it felt like a bomb ticking in her backpack. Every step they took felt heavier, the burden of the truth pressing on her chest.

Eric’s fingers squeezed hers as if he could sense the weight. “We’re almost there,” he murmured, his breath visible in the moonlight.

They reached the edge of the training field, where the old statues of founders cast long, eerie shadows. Sonia paused, her eyes tracing the worn stone faces. Once, she’d admired them symbols of strength, of tradition. Now they felt like silent judges, staring down at her with cold, unblinking eyes.

“Eric,” she said softly, her voice catching. “What if this

Morning broke gray and soft over the city. Sonia woke to the sound of rain against the window and the warmth of Eric’s arm draped over her waist. For a moment, she stayed still, breathing in the unfamiliar comfort of a morning without alarms, without fear of footsteps in the hall.Eric stirred behind her, his voice rough with sleep. “Hey.”She turned to face him, her hair tumbling over her forehead. “Hey,” she echoed, a small smile tugging at her lips.He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his thumb lingering on her cheek. “I could get used to this,” he murmured. She snorted softly. “A bed that isn’t in an abandoned dorm? No guards stationed at the door? Revolutionary.”They both laughed real laughter, the kind that started in the chest and rose up like a bubble. But underneath it, there was an ache, a question neither had fully dared to ask: What now? When they finally pulled themselves from the tangle of blankets and crept into the common room, Silas was already there, pacing,

The hotel lobby was quiet, a gentle hush broken only by the soft clink of glasses and the distant hum of city traffic outside. Sonia sat on the edge of an old velvet chair, staring at the rain-slicked window. It felt surreal the world going on as if nothing had happened. As if Daxton hadn’t burned, as if secrets hadn’t spilled like blood in the streets.Eric came in carrying two mugs of tea. He set one down in front of her before dropping into the chair across from her.She watched him, her fingers wrapping around the warm ceramic. “You always make tea when you don’t know what to say,” she teased, her voice low.Eric’s mouth twitched into a small, tired smile. “And you always pretend not to notice.”They sat in silence for a moment, the air heavy with something unspoken relief, grief, all the things neither had learned how to name yet. Finally, Sonia set her mug down. “What do we do now?”Eric leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “We heal,” he said. “We build something better. And may

After the broadcast, the world split open.By morning, every major news outlet carried Sonia’s face on their front page. Her words I am not my brother’s ghost became a headline, a rallying cry, a symbol.Social media erupted. Survivors came forward, parents demanded investigations, and board members of Daxton Academy resigned in droves. The Cartel’s name spilled into the public like oil into water, unstoppable and ugly. But as the world finally saw the truth, Sonia sat on the edge of a rooftop, watching the sunrise paint the sky in slow strokes of pink and gold. Her knees were pulled to her chest, her blazer draped over her shoulders like a blanket. It wasn’t Silas’s anymore. It was hers fully, finally.Eric climbed up beside her, a thermos in hand. “Thought you might need this,” he said, offering her coffee. She took it, her fingers brushing his. “Thank you.”He settled next to her, close enough that their arms touched. They sat in silence for a while, the city below waking up to a n

The hallway felt impossibly long. Sonia’s footsteps echoed off the peeling paint and cracked tiles, every step carrying her closer to the auditorium doors and the world beyond them.Eric walked beside her, one hand hovering at her lower back as if to steady her, though she didn’t think she could ever feel steady again. Silas led the group ahead, pushing open the heavy doors to reveal rows of journalists, bright lights, and camera rigs set up like silent soldiers. The stage was a makeshift platform of wooden crates draped in a navy cloth. At its center stood a single microphone, slightly tilted, a thin cord snaking away into a tangle of wires.Sonia paused at the threshold, her breath catching.Rivers appeared at her side, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder. “They’re all watching,” he said softly. “But they need to hear you, Sonia. Not Silas. Not the mask. You.”She swallowed, the fear crawling up her throat like ivy. Then she felt Eric’s fingers wrap around hers, warm and ground

The conference room was nothing like the grandeur of Daxton’s marble halls or the hush of its secret tunnels. It was plain, functional four white walls, a chipped wooden table, and mismatched chairs. Yet, as Sonia looked around at the people slowly filling the seats, she realized this was the real center of power now.Alex arrived first, his hair damp from the rain, eyes sharp but softer than she remembered. He nodded to her, dropping into a seat across the table and setting a battered folder down.Next came Isla, her short curls tied back, a determined set to her jaw. She offered Sonia a small, tense smile. “When you called... I didn’t think I’d come. But I couldn’t stay away,” she said, her voice tight.Sonia squeezed her hand. “Thank you. It means more than you know.”Then a few others students she’d only known in passing at Daxton, professors who’d whispered warnings in the dark, parents who’d started to connect the dots in the final days before the collapse.Silas stood near the

Sonia woke to soft light spilling across her face. For a moment, she didn’t know where she was. The sterile ceilings of Daxton, the damp underground tunnels they all flickered through her mind before fading into this: a small guestroom in the safe house, sunlight streaming through the thin curtains. She turned her head and found Eric beside her, still asleep, hair tousled, one arm draped over her waist. His breathing was deep, peaceful in a way she hadn’t seen since before all the running. She watched him for a while, memorizing the way his lashes fanned out, the small scar at the corner of his lip, the crease in his brow that seemed to stay even in sleep.A memory flashed: the first time she saw him in the library, fencing helmet tucked under his arm, eyes sharp but curious. She’d been Silas then or at least trying to be. And now, here they were, stripped of everything but each other. His eyes fluttered open slowly, and he blinked at her, dazed. Then he smiled that small, lopsided s
