Gwen once believed love could change an Alpha’s heart but when betrayal almost cost her life while her mate ran to another’s side, something inside her died. Chapter: Chapter 128
Astra's POVAnother elder, a female older elder, spoke up.“Power struggles divide the kingdom, Your Majesty,” she said, her voice smooth. “Perhaps a temporary retreat might unify the council’s efforts without public anxiety.”The words were tactful… but lethal. It wasn't a concern. It was fear.I almost yawned, they didn't care so much, they were just afraid. Afraid of what I was uncovering. Afraid of what I'd find because if corruption spread to allies, elders, and advisors, then every hidden action taken against me could be traced back to them. This was political self‑preservation dressed as peacekeeping.Ooh and they took me for fools too.Such glorified concern.I leaned forward, uncrossed my hands, and spoke without hesitation, my voice was not loud but it was firm and direct.“Peace is not maintained by silence,” I said. “And unity isn’t built through avoidance.”An uproar of murmur... again. This time solely from the council seats. There was frustration and unease embedded und

Chapter: Chapter 127
Astra's POVI stood in front of my vanity mirror for a while, when I sat but continued staring into the mirror sighing multiple times than necessary.Yet again, the council of elders has summoned me. My eyes flitted towards the side table where the letter lay sprawled open.Where is it heard that the alpha of a pack is called before the council for more times than it takes for a baby to be born? But of course, it's the capital's council of elders and they would do anything to behave like scoundrels.I picked up my cloak, walking away from the vanity mirror. Well, I'd give those oldies whatever they wanted. I moved across the room, slid on the cloak, my boots, and my crescent ring-- the heirloom ring. I didn't wear it often but maybe it will scare these peasants for a while. The corridor was just buzzing to life when I began to walk down it, the guards bowed in greeting and the other servants and maid greeted loudly or as they could. I acknowledged all.Jace was already walking ahead o

Chapter: Chapter 126
Astra's POVI moved. I could no longer see him from this angle, so I ran to the east part of the tower. If I remember correctly, I should see the end of the alleyway from there. My binoculars were raised but for a moment I didn't see anything, I was about to give up and maybe call him instantly when I saw him, turn from a corner instantly. And ran to the end of the alleyway. I saw the shadow before he did and I groaned, my chest hammering inside my chest as I watched him take a blow to his stomach. One strong enough to almost knock him out, but succeeded in knocking the wind out of him.He fell back, vision darkening, but rolled before the blade could strike. My heart jumped, my fingers sweated but I held on tightly to the binoculars.Kings swiped back, kicked hard and swept the attackers leg. Adrenaline had taken over. The attacker fell with a grunt. Kings didn't wait for him to.rise again, he bolted, blood soaking his sleeve. He turned and instead of continuing out. He ran into a tu

Chapter: Chapter 125
Astra's POVToday's weather was chilly, like it'd rained the night before. Speaking of which, it's been a while since it last rained. I stretched for the second time and instantly sank back into the chair, buried under paper works. It has been hours since dusk and yet I had not moved from my seat. A light glowed casting dark shadows across the book in front of me.My desk currently held different paperwork's, including parchment and scrolls and pins, and ink marks.Intel was slow but even so I had a lot of things to catch up with. It was my duty to make sure that with Intel from our supreme guards or not, I could guarantee the safety of my people.Suddenly, the small burner phone beside me flared, vibrating rapidly. I snatched it off the table and picked the call.“Report,” I commanded.A voice echoed from the other side of the phone, at first the sound cracked, as if distorted by wind but as the receiver spoke, the waves cleared and communication stabilized."This is Kings. Chapter: Chapter 124
Astra's POV“Well, you were set up.”I watched their expressions. The room shifted, a mingle of fear, confusion, a silent wave of disbelief. Some lowered their eyes, others reached for weapons and I could see the embarrassment, the hesitatance, the weapons suddenly felt too heavy.Jerome stepped beside me.“They followed the false signals we didn’t see,” he said quietly. “So someone here is watching your every move.”A cold breeze-- from nowhere and everywhere-- swept across the room.I didn’t blink. Not once.Outside the armory, chaos rippled through the palace guard posts. We could hear the chaos, messenger guards sprinted through halls, calling alarms, signaling rapid response units-- each one reacting to echoes of uncertainty. Echoes of what I was sure they didn't even know. But Jerome, Ron, and I remained inside the armory, sealed off.I turned to Ron.“Who sent the false signal?” I asked.Ron's fingers danced across the small laptop he had been carrying like a pouch, again, tra

Chapter: Chapter 123
Astra's POVThe corridor was quiet. I'd like to think it was unusual. It was the kind of quiet before anything happened. An eerie hush that makes a predator pause with their senses on alert.Maybe it had something to do with what I was doing or what I was wearing. It's not every time, you'd look like an assassin.I stood in the shadowed passage just outside the surveillance room, in my black spandex suit. It clung to my skin like a second skin and it made me feel much more alive and like I was on a mission, a proper mission.Jerome was beside me, leaning casually against the wall. His eyes must be narrowed or at least his brows furrowed with how stiff his shoulders were."You're sure the signal came through? You heard it?" He asked, his voice soft but taut blending in with the shadowed background, giving off a mysterious vibe, I almost rolled my eyes."It did," my expression was unreadable, but my eyes stared right ahead, "Someone's taken the bait."Jerome shrugged, then blinked once.
