Chapter: The journeyLyra’s POVPulling away from Aurelia, we began to drive down the five-mile driveway to the main road. At one point, it had been beautifully paved, with no bumps, no potholes, and especially no sinkholes. But, like anything, add a bit of neglect and a century-long conflict, and it would fade and warp over time. Clutching the manila envelope in my hand, I was super curious to see what kind of normalcy Commander Rourke and the council came up with for Rowan and me.Making sure that Rowan and I were ready, the Commander nodded for both of us to open the envelopes.Enclosed in my envelope were several pages, and just from a quick glance, they looked like school transfer documents.Pulling out the first document, it looked almost like a birth certificate. My name, with a slight deviation of my last name, address, and parents' names. Attached to that same document was a photo I don't remember ever taking. I looked happy, innocent, and definitely not someone who belonged to an elite assassin

Chapter: Good MorningLyra's POVMy alarm went off at six a.m. on the dot. You'd think, after years of training with us, waking up at 5:30 a.m. to run and do calisthenics, I'd be a morning person. The truth of the matter is, I hate the morning; no matter how much coffee I drink, I still feel like a zombie.Rolling out of bed, I go to the very small ensuite bathroom and turn the water on to warm up. I take my clothes off, put them in my basket of dirty clothes, and wonder whether I'll ever come back to wash them or if they'll be donated to the next girl who needs them.Testing the water temperature, I was pleased to know I had hot water for at least the next few minutes. Jumping in, I rubbed myself down head to toe with my washcloth and the tea tree oil soap. Tea tree oil was one of the few things we still had an excess of, and since it was a natural antibacterial, we used it for everything from tinctures, soaps, and shampoos to reduce the risk of or spread of infections. Finally feeling clean, I step out,

Chapter: RowanRowan's POVI left Lyra's room, my feet pounding down the hall towards Commander Rourke's office. Climbing down the stairs, I reach the hallway leading to his office, stilling myself, I take a minute to calm down. I couldn't let her do this alone. We've taken every step together since we were six. Somehow, some way, I would convince him to let me go.Knocking on his door, I hear his gruff voice, "Enter."Entering his office, which was a stark contrast to the gray stone walls of the main building of the stronghold. Not even asking him, I sit down and start pleading."Commander, I know I wasn't summoned, and this might seem a little uncouth," I say, trying to keep from rubbing my hands on my knees, "but I know about Lyra's mission, and I want to go as her backup. She can do this, I'm sure, but for this not to be a complete suicide mission, don't you think this would work better if we both went?"Taking a breath, I sit back in my chair, waiting for his reaction.Rourke leaned forward, st

Chapter: The MissionLyra's POVEvery beat of my heart echoed in my skull. I did my best to project an air of calm, not letting my body language give away the emotions I felt. Commander Rourke sat across from me, still staring at me, waiting for some response or reaction."Well, do you understand what the council and I are asking you to do?""Yes, Commander. But do you really think....?" Before I could even finish that sentence, he cut me off."Yes, Lyra, I do. I've trained you your whole life for this one specific mission," pointing at me and back at him, "You know it, and I know it."I knew this day was going to come eventually; I just never expected it so soon.Pushing a strand of hair away from my face, I look back up at him, "Yes, Commander, I understand what you and the council expect of me.""Commander, may I be dismissed?"Standing up from his desk, he walked over and patted me on the shoulder. "It'll all work out, Lyra, and this blasted war will finally be over. You can leave, make sure you have

Chapter: LyraLyra's POVWhen I found the rogue, he was still chewing on the body of one of the Aurelian scouts that had gone out on patrol earlier. Moonlight shone over the ground, turning the snow into glass and the blood into black ink.I've been trained for this exact moment since I was six years old to be an Assassin.Pulling my cloak around me, I pulled the silver blade from the sheath on my thigh. Crouching low, I snuck to his side away from the direction of the wind. Doing my best to avoid him smelling my scent, I waited for the exact moment to strike.Breathe in, Breathe out.I struck with the precision years of training had given me. Sliding down, I went under him, my body touching the corpse, avoiding the reeking smell of death, I raised my blade, aiming true right into the center of his heart. His eyes glared at me, not expecting his sudden death. I quickly rolled to the side, his body collapsing with a loud thump, toppling on top of the dead scout. His wolven body snapped and cracked,
