The Sakura Between Us
Synopsis
Lin Xiuying thought she had everything—a promising career as a traditional Chinese ink painter, a place at a prestigious Tokyo exhibition, and five years of love with the man she planned to marry.
Then, in a single night, she discovers that her fiancé has betrayed her with her best friend and stolen the paintings she spent years creating.
Unable to paint and desperate to escape Chengdu, Xiuying accepts a mysterious six-month residency in Kyoto funded by the powerful Sato Foundation. There she meets Sato Ren, the cold and enigmatic heir who somehow knows her work better than anyone should.
Ren gives her an impossible challenge: one hundred paintings in one hundred days.
What begins as a battle to reclaim her art slowly becomes something neither of them expected. Beneath Ren’s distant exterior is a man carrying secrets of his own—and beneath Xiuying’s heartbreak is an artist far stronger than the woman who arrived in Kyoto with nothing but a blank sketchbook.
But just as Xiuying begins to rebuild her name and open her heart again, the past refuses to stay buried. Stolen paintings, family secrets and a scandal stretching from Tokyo to Chengdu threaten not only her career, but everything she and Ren have built together.
Xiuying came to Kyoto believing she had lost everything.
Now she must decide how much she is willing to fight for her art, her name, and the love she never expected to find.
Because some paintings hide secrets—and some secrets can destroy an entire family.

Both families request privacy during this time.Tanaka showed Xiuying the statement on his phone the next morning. She read it twice.“That’s a lot of words for Mika doesn’t trust him anymore.”Tanaka took his phone back.“The Sato family is very talented at using many words to avoid the truth.”“Is that an official family skill?”“Passed down through generations.”Xiuying smiled. She was beginning to like Tanaka far too much.“What happened after we left?”Tanaka hesitated.“Do I want to know?”“No.”“Tell me.”“Mika questioned Jian.”“And?”“Jian blamed you.”“Of course.”“Then Chairman Kenji questioned Jian.”Xiuying raised an eyebrow.“And?”“Mr. Jian discovered that being questioned by Chairman Kenji is signifi

Chapter: CHAPTER 6: THE VILLA IN ARASHIYAMATHE SAKURA BETWEEN USCHAPTER 6: THE VILLA IN ARASHIYAMAThe Sato family villa in Arashiyama was not a house. It was a small mountain.Xiuying decided this as Tanaka’s car climbed a private road through walls of bamboo so tall they swallowed the morning sun.She sat in the back seat with her sketchbook pressed against her stomach.Twenty days.Twenty paintings. And somehow she had agreed to spend day twenty watching her former fiancé get engaged. She was beginning to question her intelligence.“You don’t have to go inside,” Tanaka said from the front.Xiuying looked up.“Ren said there’s a tea house near the edge of the property. If you change your mind, you can stay there. No one will disturb you.”Xiuying looked through the window.Bamboo.More bamboo.Endless bamboo. She had spent most of the previous night painting exactly that.Painting number twenty was still drying in Gion: a bamboo forest so dark that almost no light reached the ground. Her darkest painting yet.“Did Ren tell

Chapter: CHAPTER 4: 99 MORETHE SAKURA BETWEEN US CHAPTER 4: 99 MORE By day ten, the house in Gion had changed. It was no longer perfect. Ink stained one corner of the engawa where Xiuying had forgotten a brush overnight. The kitchen counter was crowded with half-finished cups of tea. Three rejected paintings had somehow ended up crumpled beside the garden stones. And the studio— The studio was a disaster. Paper everywhere. Brushes soaking where they shouldn’t be. A sweater hanging from the back of a chair. Faint black footprints crossed the floor because Xiuying had developed the terrible habit of forgetting there was ink on her feet before walking around barefoot. She loved it. Not the mess itself. What it meant. The house looked lived in now. More importantly, it looked like an artist lived there. Tanaka had noticed too. Every morning he arrived with groceries, looked at whatever new disaster had appeared overnight, and became slightly less formal. On day seven, he stopped bowing every tim

I see painting number one.”Then the gate had closed behind him.It was now 9:13 p.m.Painting number one did not exist.Xiuying stared at the paper until the white began to hurt her eyes. She t

Chapter: CHAPTER 2: THE HOUSE IN GION Kyoto was too quiet. That was Xiuying’s first thought when she stepped outside Kansai International Airport. Chengdu was never quiet. Chengdu was car horns and vendors shouting over one another. Mahjong tiles striking wooden tables. Steam hissing from noodle stalls. Motorbikes squeezing through streets that seemed permanently crowded. Even Chengdu rain was loud. Kyoto’s rain barely seemed to make a sound. It fell in thin silver lines beyond the airport doors, settling over the pavement without demanding anyone’s attention. Xiuying tightened her grip on the handle of her suitcase. Inside it were clothes, toiletries, her passport and the black invitation from the Sato Foundation. No brushes. No ink. No seals. Only the blank sketchbook tucked beneath her arm. That was her silent protest. You invited a painter who doesn’t paint anymore. Let’s see what you do with her. A man in a dark suit waited near the pickup area beneath a black umbrella. In his hands was a small woode
