Chapter: CHAPTER 13
The Folder Under the Door❄ · ❄ · ❄The folder was waiting on the floor of her room, just inside the door, and Elodie opened it with her lips still warm from his kiss. She had floated up the back stairs at one in the morning, past the sleeping house and its haze of music and cider, and shut her door, and stood with her fingers pressed against her mouth. Snow came down past the window in great soft flakes. She was smiling. She did not yet know it would be the last time she smiled that night. Then she saw it: a plain manila folder, unmarked, unsealed, slid under the door by someone who did not want to be seen. Light as paper. She carried it to the lamp and opened it.The first page was a memorandum on the letterhead of a law firm she knew very well: Adeyemi & Cross. The date, in the corner, was the eighth of November. She read it once, quickly. Then again, slowly, with her finger moving beneath each line.RE: Marchetti Confections, trust provisions. Confirm

Mistletoe Is a Legal Gray Area
❄ · ❄ · ❄It was Rafe who saved them, and he did it with a goose leg.“Coincidence?” He rose from his seat holding one aloft like a scepter. “My dear Voss, you have clearly never been to a Hale Christmas. We are a family of very tidy coincidences. My grandfather proposed to my grandmother on a Tuesday because it was the only day the ferry ran. My cousin Tobias lost his hair and his fiancée in the same week.”“Rafe!” said Tobias.“Too soon? Forgive me.” He bowed. “My point, sir, is that the Hales and the Marchettis have both been cursed by controlling elders. It’s hardly shocking that two exhausted young people found one another in the wreckage. Some people find love in a bar. Some at a gala. We are a family of ship captains. We find it in storms.”A small, startled laugh rose from the cousins. Then another. Winifred pressed her napkin to her lips. And Odalys said, in a voice of perfect, glacial calm, “Mr. Voss, I am eighty-one. I hav

The Long Table at Eight O’Clock
❄ · ❄ · ❄Dinner began beautifully, which was how Elodie knew it would end in disaster.Mrs. Pruitt had outdone herself: a roasted goose glistening in the center of the table, chestnut stuffing, honeyed carrots, a silver tureen of bisque. Forty candles lit the long dining room, and the Hale family, scrubbed and dressed in velvet, glowed along both sides like figures in an old painting.Vittorio sat at Odalys’s left, Anders beside him. Elodie sat across from them, with Julian at her side, so close that his sleeve brushed hers each time he lifted his glass.“I must compliment your cook,” said Vittorio, to the table at large. “Truly. Her hand with a goose is superb. We Marchetti know about hands. It is how the business was built, by hand, a recipe at a time, my great-grandmother’s kitchen in Bologna.”“A lovely heritage,” said Odalys. “I have always admired a family that remembers its kitchen.”“It is not nostalgia, signora. It is p

Two Men and a Staircase❄ · ❄ · ❄Vittorio Marchetti did not enter a room. He took possession of it.He came into the Great Hall of Hollin Hall in a camel coat with a fur collar, his silver hair brushed back, his hands extended, as though he had been welcomed by a hundred people instead of one stunned footman. He looked at the portraits, the staircase, the roaring fireplace, and the twelve-foot tree glittering with Hale heirlooms, and he smiled with such open, radiant delight that Elodie, standing on the landing with her heart in her throat, almost believed it.“Cara!” He took the stairs two at a time, arms wide. “My Elodie. Let me look at you. You are thinner. They don’t feed you?”“Papa.” She let him embrace her. He smelled of vanilla and wool and the cologne he had worn since her childhood. For a moment, in spite of everything, her eyes stung.“And this must be the man.”Julian had come down the corridor in his dark suit. He walked with a calm, level stride that she now knew was armor, and he stopped on t

A Voice from Chicago❄ · ❄ · ❄ The phone rang as she was taking off her boots, and she knew who it was before she looked. Eleven missed calls. And now the twelfth. Her father's name on the screen, lit up in the cold light of the boot room. Julian was not there. He had gone to confer with the lawyers who had arrived by afternoon, and the corridor behind her was empty except for a rack of coats and the smell of wet wool. She stood there with the phone buzzing in her palm like a trapped bird. Then she answered it. "Elodie." His voice was calm. It was always calm. "Four days of silence from my daughter. I confess I was beginning to feel neglected." "Papa." Her own voice came out smaller than she wanted. "I told you in the email. I'm engaged. I'm with his family in Vermont." "Yes. I read the email. I have also read the Hale family trust, which is not difficult to find if one pays a good lawyer." A faint rustle of paper. "Very interesting. A young man with a clause and a deadline, and a girl with

Chapter: CHAPTER 9
The Study Where Nobody Lies❄ · ❄ · ❄ Nobody was ever summoned to Odalys Hale's study alone and came out the same. Julian had said so on the second day, as a joke. He had not been joking. The summons came on the stroke of noon, delivered by Mrs. Pruitt with a face of stone and a plate of shortbread. "Madam would like a word," she said. "In the study. Alone." Elodie's stomach dropped to her boots. She glanced across the hall. Julian was deep in conversation with his lawyers, his back to her, and she did not call out. This one, she understood, was hers to walk into. Odalys Hale's study was at the top of the east stair, a round room in the old tower, lined with books and maps and the brass instruments of a hundred sea voyages. A fire burned low. A great desk of black walnut stood in the window, and on it, set carefully in a silver frame, was a photograph that Elodie knew at once, though she had never seen it. A man and a woman on a ship's deck, laughing, windblown, her hand on his arm. The man had Julian's jaw
