Mag-log inPOV: CHELSEA
I had spent years letting my husband run what belonged to me. This time, I was taking everything back.
The elevator climbed steadily toward the top floor of Bennett-Valerie Global Enterprises, the smooth glass reflectiveness showing a woman who looked nothing like the broken mother who had drowned in black river water. I wore a tailored cream suit, my hair pinned back tightly, and my daughter's hand held firmly in mine.
Lily walked beside me in complete silence. Her dark eyes were watchful, far too mature for a six-year-old, taking in the gleaming marble and brass of the skyscraper that my family’s foundation had built.
When the glass doors slid open to the executive floor, the front desk receptionist nearly dropped her tablet.
"Mrs... Mrs. Bennett?" She scrambled to her feet, stammering. "We…. we weren't expecting you. Mr. Bennett isn't here today. He went to JFK to pick up Ms. Lee…"
"I know where he is," I cut her off, my tone flat and icy. "Gather the board members, the head of legal, and the chief financial officer in the main boardroom. Right now."
"Ma'am? Mr. Bennett usually handles…."
"Mr. Bennett is an employee whose executive contract is currently under emergency review," I said, leaning over the desk just enough to look her dead in the eye. "You have five minutes to get everyone in that room, or you can join him in seeking new employment."
The receptionist turned pale, frantically picking up her landline.
Five minutes later, I walked into the glass-walled boardroom. Nine senior executives, men and women who had spent the last five years taking orders from Daniel, nodding along while he presented my inheritance as his personal empire, sat around the massive mahogany table.
Beside me stood Mr. Smith, my grandfather’s long-time corporate attorney, holding a leather briefcase full of founding documents.
"Chelsea?" David, the vice president, stood up with an awkward chuckle. "What is the meaning of this emergency meeting? Daniel didn't mention…."
"Daniel doesn't own this company," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table. I didn't wait for anyone to offer it to me. I sat in the high-backed leather chair that Daniel had occupied for half a decade. "My grandfather founded this enterprise. I hold seventy-two percent of the voting shares. Daniel was granted power of attorney and executive management rights solely through our marriage agreement."
I slammed a heavy folder down onto the mahogany wood. The slap resonated off the glass walls like a gunshot.
"Effective as of eight-thirty this morning, that power of attorney is revoked," I declared. "Daniel Bennett’s executive authority over all accounts, corporate properties, company finances, and investment portfolios is terminated. Smith has already filed the paperwork with the state registry."
The room descended into utter chaos.
"Chelsea, you can't be serious!" David gasped, his eyes wide. "Daniel has been managing the regional expansion! He's finalizing the acquisition with Vicky Lee today!"
"Then he can finalize it on his own dime," I said coldly. "Security is currently changing the security codes on his office door. His corporate cards are frozen. Any vendor or bank authorizing a transaction under his signature after nine o'clock will be sued into insolvency."
The executives stared at me, completely stunned. For years, I had been the quiet, humble wife who stayed home, cooked dinners, and let her husband take the spotlight. Daniel had carefully painted a picture of me as an heiress who couldn't care less about business.
They had forgotten who raised me. They had forgotten that before I married Daniel, I spent four years under my grandfather's direct tutelage learning how to run a global conglomerate.
My personal phone began buzzing wildly on the table. Daniel's caller ID flashed across the screen.
I picked it up, swiped to answer, and put it on speaker so the entire boardroom could hear.
"Chelsea! What the hell is going on?!" Daniel’s voice exploded through the speaker, breathless and trembling with rage. "I just tried to pay for our hotel booking for the Chicago team and my black card was declined! Bank of America said my access was flagged! Are you insane?!"
I didn't answer. I just listened to him breathe heavily into the receiver.
"Answer me!" he roared. "Where are you? Why aren't you at the penthouse? Vicky and I are waiting in the driveway and the smart locks won't accept my code!"
"You're outside my apartment, Daniel," I said softly, my voice contrasting sharply with his hysteria. "And as of twenty minutes ago, you no longer work for Bennett-Valerie. Do not attempt to enter the corporate building. Security has orders to escort you off the property if you step foot in the lobby."
"Chelsea, stop this ridiculous game!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "You can't do this to me! I built this company!"
"You didn't build anything," I said. "You managed my money. And your management contract has just been canceled."
I hung up before he could utter another word and tossed the phone onto the table.
I turned back to Smith, who was already sitting beside me with his laptop open, pulling up the master asset ledgers.
"I want a complete, itemized audit," I instructed Smith, ignoring the pale, terrified faces of the board members sitting around us. "Every property under my name, every shell company Daniel created, every investment account he touched, and every corporate expense logged under Vicky Lee's name over the past three years."
"I’m already on it, Chelsea," Smith replied, his fingers flying across his keyboard.
Ten minutes passed in tense silence as Smith ran the deep forensic search across our private holdings. I sat with my arms crossed, watching Lily draw quietly on a notepad beside me. She didn't flinch at the tension in the room. She knew what was coming.
Suddenly, Smith froze. His hands stopped over the keyboard, and the color drained slowly from his face.
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with shock.
"Chelsea..." Smith whispered, turning the laptop screen toward me. "You need to see this."
I leaned forward, my gaze locking onto the financial ledger.
Line after line of encrypted wire transfers spilled across the screen, totaling tens of millions of dollars, routed directly out of my company’s core operational accounts into offshore accounts registered under a single, unfamiliar corporate entity.
An entity where the sole named beneficiary wasn't even Daniel. It was Vicky Lee.
POV: VICKY Daniel had promised me a future built on Chelsea’s wealth, but now his wife was threatening to destroy everything we had planned. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the hotel suite overlooked the glittering skyline of Manhattan, but the luxury surrounding us felt thin, brittle, and ready to snap. Daniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged animal, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his knuckles white with tension."Pick up, Chelsea. Pick up the damn phone," he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with a mixture of raw panic and rising fury. He lowered the phone, stared at the screen, and cursed loudly before throwing it onto the velvet sofa. "She blocked my secondary line. She actually blocked it!"I sat on the plush leather armchair, nursing a glass of sparkling water, keeping my face perfectly composed. I knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this. For three years, I had learned the delicate art of managing Daniel Bennett, playing t
POV: CHELSEAMoney would become worthless when the world ended, but clean water could mean the difference between life and death.By three in the morning, the warehouse floor was quiet. Floodlights hung from the steel rafters, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete bay. I stood on the upper catwalk, leaning against the cold iron railing as I looked down at the initial shipment of commercial water filtration towers, industrial reverse-osmosis units, and sealed high-capacity storage tanks. They were safely stacked in Sector A, wrapped in heavy tarpaulins, looking like silent monoliths in the dark.I looked down at the tablet in my hands. Ordering tens of millions of dollars worth of survival gear in a single week was a guaranteed way to attract federal scrutiny or black-market predators. I couldn't afford either. To stay beneath the radar, I had designed a phased, decentralized procurement schedule spread across seventy-eight distinct supply chains. Every contract was routed t
POV: CHELSEA Daniel had stolen millions from my company, but the money was only the beginning of what he had hidden from me.Morning light filtered through the tinted glass of Smith’s high-security law office on Wall Street. On the marble table between us sat three thick black binders, filled with forensic financial statements that had taken his team all night to compile."Every single one of these transfers came from accounts you granted him sign-off authority on three years ago," Smith said, tapping a red line on the top sheet. "About thirty percent went to legitimate operational suppliers, freight, regional office leases, standard payroll. But the remaining seventy percent? Transferred out in lump sums of two to three million dollars to paper companies with no physical offices, no listed employees, and zero tax filings."I stared at the figures, my expression unreadable. "Aegis Strategic.""And four other shadow entities linked to it," Smith confirmed, his face grim. "He was metic
POV: CHELSEA My daughter had drawn a stranger standing behind my husband on the day he murdered me, and I was determined to discover who he was.The quiet office inside the warehouse felt instantly colder. I pulled Lily onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling frame as I pulled the crayon drawing closer under the harsh desk lamp. The heavy charcoal shape loomed over Daniel on the boat's deck, broad shoulders, a sharp, structured vest, and a strange emblem scratched near his shoulder."Lily," I said gently, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her. "Tell Mommy about this man. Did you hear him say anything before... before I fell into the water?"Lily stared at the black lines on the paper, her tiny fingers twisting the hem of her pajama top."He was standing right next to Daddy when they loaded the big silver boxes onto the boat," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Daddy looked scared of him, Mommy. The man had a dark coat on and he looke
POV: CHELSEA Daniel thought I was preparing to run away from him. He had no idea I was preparing to survive without him.I stood behind the double-paned security glass of the townhouse, looking down at his furious face on the intercom monitor. The evening air was cool, but sweat glistened on his forehead, his jaw clenching as he waited for an answer that made sense in his narrow, selfish world."I asked you a question, Chelsea!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm against the iron gate again. "Tons of grain? Industrial water purifiers? Solar grids? What kind of ridiculous, manic breakdown are you having? Is this your revenge because I brought Vicky to the city?!""Our marriage is over, Daniel," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. "What I buy, how I spend my money, and where I put my assets is no longer any of your concern. Leave my property before my security team physically removes you.""Are you insane?!" he barked, throwing his hands up in utter disbelie
POV: CHELSEA I had one hundred and fifty days to prepare for the end of the world, and I was not going to waste a single hour. The numbers burned into my mind like raw iron pressed against skin. November 20. Exactly five months before the sky collapsed and torrential rain submerged the entire Eastern Seaboard under dark, suffocating water.Staring at the laptop screen in Smith’s private office, I watched the red flags bloom across the financial ledger. Daniel hadn't just been cheating on me; he and Vicky had been systematically bleeding my inheritance dry, funneling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was setting up a quiet nest egg for his future with her. In reality, he was stealing paper money that would become utterly worthless in a few short months."Smith," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "Execute an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts immediately. File an ex parte injunction against Daniel for corporate e
