POV: CHELSEA

My daughter had drawn a stranger standing behind my husband on the day he murdered me, and I was determined to discover who he was.

The quiet office inside the warehouse felt instantly colder. I pulled Lily onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling frame as I pulled the crayon drawing closer under the harsh desk lamp.

The heavy charcoal shape loomed over Daniel on the boat's deck, broad shoulders, a sharp, structured vest, and a strange emblem scratched near his shoulder.

"Lily," I said gently, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her. "Tell Mommy about this man. Did you hear him say anything before... before I fell into the water?"

Lily stared at the black lines on the paper, her tiny fingers twisting the hem of her pajama top.

"He was standing right next to Daddy when they loaded the big silver boxes onto the boat," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Daddy looked scared of him, Mommy. The man had a dark coat on and he looked at his watch. He told Daddy there wasn't enough time to save everyone, and that they had to leave right now."

"Did he say anything else?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Did he have a name?"

Lily shook her head slowly, leaning back against my chest. "No. But Daddy gave him a little black metal box from your desk at home. Then Daddy pulled me away."

A sharp chill ran straight down my spine.

In my previous life, I had been completely consumed by the sheer terror of the rising waters, the collapse of society, and the frantic struggle to keep my child alive. I had only had eyes for Daniel, trusting him to lead us to safety.

Now, like pieces of a dark puzzle slamming into place, old memories resurfaced with terrifying clarity.

In the weeks leading up to the flood, Daniel had been erratic. He took silent, encrypted phone calls on the balcony at two in the morning. He left our apartment without explanation, returning hours later smelling of rain and industrial grease, brushing off my concern as "stress from corporate acquisitions."

I had thought he was working late to protect our family's future. In reality, he was meeting people behind my back, people who knew the flood was coming long before the sky even turned gray.

"You did so well, Lily," I kissed her hair, gently pulling the drawing away and tucking it into a secure leather binder. "Mommy's going to find out who he is. Go back to sleep, sweetie. Marcus is right outside the door."

Once Lily was tucked back into the small living quarters above the warehouse floor, I went straight to work.

I took out my laptop and took high-resolution photos of the drawing, zooming in on the rough symbol Lily had scribbled on the stranger's shoulder. It was a crude sketch, but distinct: a heavy ring cut in half by a sharp, diagonal fracture, a broken circle.

I immediately drafted an encrypted email to Smith, attaching the photo along with specific instructions:

Smith,

Run a deep forensic search on every wire transfer Daniel authorized over the last eighteen months. Look for shell corporations, private maritime logistics, and high-end security contractors. Cross-reference any transaction that involved physical hardware or off-grid assets.

I also need you to check who owns the trademark or logo matching the attached image. Keep this off corporate servers.

Next, I dialed Marcus's direct line. He picked up on the first ring.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Marcus, starting tonight, I want full, real-time surveillance sweeps on every supply truck entering the gate," I ordered, staring through the one-way glass down at the cavernous warehouse floor where workers were stacking crates of freeze-dried rations. "Check for tails. If any vehicle follows a delivery within three miles of the ridge, I want plates, driver photos, and real-time tracking. No exceptions."

"Consider it done, ma'am," Marcus replied without hesitation. "We’ve already deployed two spotters along the access road."

I barely slept that night. I sat at the desk, pacing between the floor-to-ceiling windows and my tablet, monitoring the supply chain. Fuel tankers were scheduled to arrive at dawn, along with three industrial-grade solar grid arrays. Every dollar I spent was converting useless paper currency into hard, life-saving infrastructure.

At 6:30 AM, my secure phone buzzed on the desk.

An encrypted file notification from Smith popped up on the screen. Attached was a fourteen-page preliminary forensic audit.

I opened it immediately, my eyes scanning the dense financial data.

Smith had uncovered a paper trail of seven separate transactions totaling eight million dollars, authorized by Daniel over the past nine months. The funds had been drawn directly from Bennett-Valerie's secondary research and development budget, a department I rarely monitored.

The money had been routed through a Delaware-based shell company registered under a fake business address: Aegis Strategic Acquisitions.

According to the state registry, Aegis was listed as a "private security and logistical consulting firm." But its true ownership was masked behind layers of offshore trusts in Panama and the Cayman Islands.

I scrolled down to the bottom of the document where Smith had attached the contractor’s official corporate registration certificate from five years ago.

My breath caught in my throat. My grip tightened on the edge of the tablet until my knuckles turned white.

Printed right in the center of the certificate’s official seal was a stylized black emblem, a solid steel ring shattered down the middle by a jagged line.

It was the exact same broken circle Lily had drawn beside the mysterious stranger.

POV: VICKY Daniel had promised me a future built on Chelsea’s wealth, but now his wife was threatening to destroy everything we had planned. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the hotel suite overlooked the glittering skyline of Manhattan, but the luxury surrounding us felt thin, brittle, and ready to snap. Daniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged animal, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his knuckles white with tension."Pick up, Chelsea. Pick up the damn phone," he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with a mixture of raw panic and rising fury. He lowered the phone, stared at the screen, and cursed loudly before throwing it onto the velvet sofa. "She blocked my secondary line. She actually blocked it!"I sat on the plush leather armchair, nursing a glass of sparkling water, keeping my face perfectly composed. I knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this. For three years, I had learned the delicate art of managing Daniel Bennett, playing t

POV: CHELSEAMoney would become worthless when the world ended, but clean water could mean the difference between life and death.By three in the morning, the warehouse floor was quiet. Floodlights hung from the steel rafters, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete bay. I stood on the upper catwalk, leaning against the cold iron railing as I looked down at the initial shipment of commercial water filtration towers, industrial reverse-osmosis units, and sealed high-capacity storage tanks. They were safely stacked in Sector A, wrapped in heavy tarpaulins, looking like silent monoliths in the dark.I looked down at the tablet in my hands. Ordering tens of millions of dollars worth of survival gear in a single week was a guaranteed way to attract federal scrutiny or black-market predators. I couldn't afford either. To stay beneath the radar, I had designed a phased, decentralized procurement schedule spread across seventy-eight distinct supply chains. Every contract was routed t

POV: CHELSEA Daniel had stolen millions from my company, but the money was only the beginning of what he had hidden from me.Morning light filtered through the tinted glass of Smith’s high-security law office on Wall Street. On the marble table between us sat three thick black binders, filled with forensic financial statements that had taken his team all night to compile."Every single one of these transfers came from accounts you granted him sign-off authority on three years ago," Smith said, tapping a red line on the top sheet. "About thirty percent went to legitimate operational suppliers, freight, regional office leases, standard payroll. But the remaining seventy percent? Transferred out in lump sums of two to three million dollars to paper companies with no physical offices, no listed employees, and zero tax filings."I stared at the figures, my expression unreadable. "Aegis Strategic.""And four other shadow entities linked to it," Smith confirmed, his face grim. "He was metic

POV: CHELSEA Daniel thought I was preparing to run away from him. He had no idea I was preparing to survive without him.I stood behind the double-paned security glass of the townhouse, looking down at his furious face on the intercom monitor. The evening air was cool, but sweat glistened on his forehead, his jaw clenching as he waited for an answer that made sense in his narrow, selfish world."I asked you a question, Chelsea!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm against the iron gate again. "Tons of grain? Industrial water purifiers? Solar grids? What kind of ridiculous, manic breakdown are you having? Is this your revenge because I brought Vicky to the city?!""Our marriage is over, Daniel," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. "What I buy, how I spend my money, and where I put my assets is no longer any of your concern. Leave my property before my security team physically removes you.""Are you insane?!" he barked, throwing his hands up in utter disbelie

POV: CHELSEA I had one hundred and fifty days to prepare for the end of the world, and I was not going to waste a single hour. The numbers burned into my mind like raw iron pressed against skin. November 20. Exactly five months before the sky collapsed and torrential rain submerged the entire Eastern Seaboard under dark, suffocating water.Staring at the laptop screen in Smith’s private office, I watched the red flags bloom across the financial ledger. Daniel hadn't just been cheating on me; he and Vicky had been systematically bleeding my inheritance dry, funneling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was setting up a quiet nest egg for his future with her. In reality, he was stealing paper money that would become utterly worthless in a few short months."Smith," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "Execute an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts immediately. File an ex parte injunction against Daniel for corporate e
