POV: CHELSEA

Daniel had stolen millions from my company, but the money was only the beginning of what he had hidden from me.

Morning light filtered through the tinted glass of Smith’s high-security law office on Wall Street. On the marble table between us sat three thick black binders, filled with forensic financial statements that had taken his team all night to compile.

"Every single one of these transfers came from accounts you granted him sign-off authority on three years ago," Smith said, tapping a red line on the top sheet. "About thirty percent went to legitimate operational suppliers, freight, regional office leases, standard payroll. But the remaining seventy percent? Transferred out in lump sums of two to three million dollars to paper companies with no physical offices, no listed employees, and zero tax filings."

I stared at the figures, my expression unreadable. "Aegis Strategic."

"And four other shadow entities linked to it," Smith confirmed, his face grim. "He was meticulous, Chelsea. If you hadn't revoked his credentials yesterday morning, this money would have been completely untraceable by the end of the month."

"Subpoena every bank involved," I instructed, leaning back in my chair. "Lock down the main corporate servers, archive every deleted email on Daniel’s drive, and strip his access to our secondary cloud backups. Don't leave him a single door open."

"Should I serve him with the formal fraud suit today?" Smith asked.

"No," I replied smoothly. "Not yet."

If I confronted Daniel now with half-baked legal threats, he would panic. He would burn whatever physical records he had left, scrub his personal devices, and go running to his legal team, painting me as an unhinged, hysterical wife acting out of pure spousal jealousy. I needed him to think he still had a chance to manipulate me. I needed him arrogant, desperate, and loud.

By six o'clock that evening, I had returned to the Upper Manhattan townhouse under heavy private security detail.

I was standing by the fireplace in the main living room, reviewing construction bids for the warehouse's deep underground water cisterns, when the front gates buzzed.

I didn't need to look at the monitor to know who it was.

Moments later, the heavy front door unlocked, and Daniel stormed into the foyer. He didn't care that two of my armed guards stood right behind him, their hands resting near their holsters. His hair was messy, his tie was torn off, and his eyes were wild with humiliation.

"What is the meaning of this, Chelsea?!" Daniel roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings as he threw a stack of bank notifications onto the coffee table. "My personal accounts are frozen! My car lease was revoked! You had security escort me out of the corporate garage like a common criminal in front of the entire board!"

I didn't flinch. I carefully set my tablet on the mantelpiece and turned to face him, my hands folded calmly in front of my cream trousers.

"You were an executive officer whose authority was granted entirely at my discretion," I said, my voice steady and cold. "I simply revoked what was mine."

"Yours?!" Daniel laughed bitterly, taking an aggressive step toward me before the guards shifted forward, forcing him to freeze. He glared at them, then spat back at me, "I built Bennett-Valerie into what it is today! I ran the meetings! I signed the deals while you stayed home playing house!"

"You managed my grandfather's money, Daniel. And you managed it poorly."

"Is this still about Vicky?!" he shouted, throwing his hands in the air with exasperated frustration. "Are you really destroying our family, my career, and our reputation because I brought a female colleague into the city?! I've told you a hundred times, Vicky is purely professional! She is helping us secure the Midwest acquisition!"

He took a deep breath, forcing his voice into a softer, patronizing tone, the exact manipulative voice he used whenever he wanted to smooth things over after stepping out of line.

"Look, Chelsea... I know you've been stressed lately," he said, stepping closer with a tight, reassuring smile. "You're clearly having some kind of emotional episode. But if you call Smith right now, drop these insane account freezes, and apologize to Vicky for the disrespect, we can put this behind us. Everything can go back to normal."

Normal.

The word hung in the air like poison.

A sudden, violent weight pressed into my chest. In an instant, the warm living room faded, replaced by the suffocating nightmare of my previous life.

I remembered the taste of rust and river mud pouring down my throat. I remembered the ice-cold water closing over my head, burning my lungs while the black night sky disappeared above me. I remembered looking up through the violent current, watching Daniel’s cold, unbothered face as he held a screaming Lily in his arms and allowed me to sink to the bottom of the world. He hadn't just cheated on me. He had murdered me in cold blood without a single second of hesitation.

And now, he stood six feet away from me, asking for an apology so we could go back to "normal."

A cold, lethal stillness settled into my bones. The last trace of any human warmth I had ever felt for this man died right then and there.

"Our marriage was over the moment you stepped off that plane with her, Daniel," I said, my voice dropping so low it sent a chill through the room. "There is no normal. There is no apology. And you will never step foot inside my home again."

Daniel stared at me, his patronizing smile slowly vanishing, replaced by a dark, ugly scowl when he realized his usual charm had failed.

"Get out," I ordered softly.

The security guards moved in immediately, grabbing Daniel by his arms and forcing him back toward the front door.

"You're going to regret this, Chelsea!" Daniel spat, thrashing against their grip as they dragged him across the threshold. "You have no idea what you're setting in motion! You think you own everything?! You don't own a damn thing!"

The guards shoved him out onto the stone steps and slammed the heavy oak door shut, locking it with a sharp, heavy thud.

Through the narrow side window, I watched Daniel stumble down the steps, pulling his jacket straight, his face flushed with rage. He pulled his phone from his inner pocket, his fingers tapping the screen frantically as he walked toward the iron gates.

He brought the phone to his ear. I stepped closer to the glass, watching his jaw move.

As he reached the street, he looked back over his shoulder at the townhouse, his voice dropping into a tense, desperate whisper that caught on the outside intercom mic:

“She has started investigating the project.”

POV: VICKY Daniel had promised me a future built on Chelsea’s wealth, but now his wife was threatening to destroy everything we had planned. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the hotel suite overlooked the glittering skyline of Manhattan, but the luxury surrounding us felt thin, brittle, and ready to snap. Daniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged animal, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his knuckles white with tension."Pick up, Chelsea. Pick up the damn phone," he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with a mixture of raw panic and rising fury. He lowered the phone, stared at the screen, and cursed loudly before throwing it onto the velvet sofa. "She blocked my secondary line. She actually blocked it!"I sat on the plush leather armchair, nursing a glass of sparkling water, keeping my face perfectly composed. I knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this. For three years, I had learned the delicate art of managing Daniel Bennett, playing t

POV: CHELSEAMoney would become worthless when the world ended, but clean water could mean the difference between life and death.By three in the morning, the warehouse floor was quiet. Floodlights hung from the steel rafters, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete bay. I stood on the upper catwalk, leaning against the cold iron railing as I looked down at the initial shipment of commercial water filtration towers, industrial reverse-osmosis units, and sealed high-capacity storage tanks. They were safely stacked in Sector A, wrapped in heavy tarpaulins, looking like silent monoliths in the dark.I looked down at the tablet in my hands. Ordering tens of millions of dollars worth of survival gear in a single week was a guaranteed way to attract federal scrutiny or black-market predators. I couldn't afford either. To stay beneath the radar, I had designed a phased, decentralized procurement schedule spread across seventy-eight distinct supply chains. Every contract was routed t

POV: CHELSEA My daughter had drawn a stranger standing behind my husband on the day he murdered me, and I was determined to discover who he was.The quiet office inside the warehouse felt instantly colder. I pulled Lily onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling frame as I pulled the crayon drawing closer under the harsh desk lamp. The heavy charcoal shape loomed over Daniel on the boat's deck, broad shoulders, a sharp, structured vest, and a strange emblem scratched near his shoulder."Lily," I said gently, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her. "Tell Mommy about this man. Did you hear him say anything before... before I fell into the water?"Lily stared at the black lines on the paper, her tiny fingers twisting the hem of her pajama top."He was standing right next to Daddy when they loaded the big silver boxes onto the boat," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Daddy looked scared of him, Mommy. The man had a dark coat on and he looke

POV: CHELSEA Daniel thought I was preparing to run away from him. He had no idea I was preparing to survive without him.I stood behind the double-paned security glass of the townhouse, looking down at his furious face on the intercom monitor. The evening air was cool, but sweat glistened on his forehead, his jaw clenching as he waited for an answer that made sense in his narrow, selfish world."I asked you a question, Chelsea!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm against the iron gate again. "Tons of grain? Industrial water purifiers? Solar grids? What kind of ridiculous, manic breakdown are you having? Is this your revenge because I brought Vicky to the city?!""Our marriage is over, Daniel," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. "What I buy, how I spend my money, and where I put my assets is no longer any of your concern. Leave my property before my security team physically removes you.""Are you insane?!" he barked, throwing his hands up in utter disbelie

POV: CHELSEA I had one hundred and fifty days to prepare for the end of the world, and I was not going to waste a single hour. The numbers burned into my mind like raw iron pressed against skin. November 20. Exactly five months before the sky collapsed and torrential rain submerged the entire Eastern Seaboard under dark, suffocating water.Staring at the laptop screen in Smith’s private office, I watched the red flags bloom across the financial ledger. Daniel hadn't just been cheating on me; he and Vicky had been systematically bleeding my inheritance dry, funneling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was setting up a quiet nest egg for his future with her. In reality, he was stealing paper money that would become utterly worthless in a few short months."Smith," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "Execute an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts immediately. File an ex parte injunction against Daniel for corporate e
