POV: VICKY

Daniel had promised me a future built on Chelsea’s wealth, but now his wife was threatening to destroy everything we had planned.

The floor-to-ceiling windows of the hotel suite overlooked the glittering skyline of Manhattan, but the luxury surrounding us felt thin, brittle, and ready to snap. Daniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged animal, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his knuckles white with tension.

"Pick up, Chelsea. Pick up the damn phone," he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with a mixture of raw panic and rising fury. He lowered the phone, stared at the screen, and cursed loudly before throwing it onto the velvet sofa. "She blocked my secondary line. She actually blocked it!"

I sat on the plush leather armchair, nursing a glass of sparkling water, keeping my face perfectly composed. I knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this. For three years, I had learned the delicate art of managing Daniel Bennett, playing the supportive, quiet colleague in public while steering his ambition behind closed doors.

"She’s just having a hysterical episode, Vicky," Daniel said, running both hands through his disheveled hair as he stopped in front of me. "It’s pure emotional leverage. Chelsea is a soft, dependent woman. She’s never managed an operational budget in her life! She thinks she can freeze my cards and run Bennett-Valerie on her own, but she’ll realize within a week that the board won't respect her. She’ll come crawling back, begging me to handle the mess."

I took a slow, deliberate sip of my water, my eyes watching him with a cool evaluation.

She isn't coming back, I thought. A woman throwing a tantrum doesn't strip a man's executive power in two hours.

"Daniel," I said softly, keeping my tone smooth and reassuring. "I understand you think she's acting out of jealousy, but the financial restrictions are real. The corporate black cards have declined. The hotel manager just called the suite to ask for a secondary credit authorization for our stay."

Daniel’s jaw clenched tightly. "I’ll handle the manager! I have private offshore lines that…"

"That she’s currently auditing," I interrupted gently, leaning forward. "That’s what concerns me, Daniel. For three years, you assured me that your marriage was nothing more than a legal formality, a convenient arrangement to secure your grandfather-in-law's estate. You promised me that Chelsea’s wealth would build our future, that every transfer we made was completely untraceable."

I stood up, walking toward him, my silk heels clicking against the hardwood perimeter of the rug. "I tolerated playing the quiet colleague. I tolerated sitting at your family dinners, watching you play the devoted husband, because you swore I would never have to worry about security again. But now? Smith’s legal team is digging into every secondary shell company we set up. Several payments I thought were buried under research and development have been flagged."

"She won't find anything that ties directly to you," Daniel snapped defensively, though his eyes darted away for a fraction of a second. "The accounts are layered through three different Caribbean holdings. Smith is a corporate lawyer, not a forensic intelligence officer. He’s looking for routine marital embezzlement."

"And if her investigation uncovers us?" I pressed, my voice dropping an octave. "If she proves the money moved directly into accounts under my name? My career, my standing, everything I built before I met you vanishes overnight."

"Then keep your mouth shut and stay out of sight!" Daniel barked, his calm facade cracking completely. He grabbed his coat off the chair, his face flushed red. "Stop panicking like a child! Chelsea doesn't have the stomach for a real war. I know my wife. She’s weak, she’s emotional, and she cares too much about her family's precious reputation to drag this into open court."

He turned on his heel and walked into the adjoining office, slamming the door shut behind him to make his private calls.

I stood alone in the center of the living room, a cold knot tightening in my stomach.

Daniel was blind. He was so blinded by his own arrogance, so accustomed to treating Chelsea like a mindless ornament, that he couldn't see the trap closing around him. But I wasn't blind. I had spent years climbing from nothing to reach high-level corporate logistics. I knew what a targeted, execution-style corporate takeover looked like, and Chelsea wasn't throwing a tantrum. She was executing an ambush.

My personal phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting a routine notification from my off-grid trade contact regarding the water filtration units I had tried to divert earlier that morning.

Instead, the screen displayed a text message from an unregistered, encrypted number.

Unknown: Your cover is blown. Target has traced the Aegis wire transfers.

My blood ran cold. My breath hitched in my throat as I tapped the attachment below the message.

It was a high-resolution photograph of an official corporate registration certificate, the exact document Smith’s legal team had pulled from the state archives hours ago. Red digital ink highlighted the shell company’s name: Aegis Strategic Acquisitions.

And stamped right in the center of the certificate’s official header, circled in bright crimson digital ink, was a stylized, dark emblem: a solid steel ring fractured down the middle by a sharp, diagonal line. A broken circle.

Below the photo, a second message appeared:

Unknown: She knows about the logo. She knows about the shipments. Fix it, or Aegis will eliminate both of you.

A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck. My fingers trembled as I held the phone. I knew Aegis was a private security contractor. I knew Daniel had used company funds to secure off-grid assets through them. But I had believed it was just high-end muscle, an insurance policy for the private holdings we were building.

"Daniel," I called out, my voice cracking slightly.

No answer came from the office, only the muffled sound of him shouting at a bank representative.

I walked over to the office door, shoved it open, and stepped inside. Daniel was standing by the desk, glaring at his laptop screen.

"I told you I was on a call, Vicky…"

"Look at this," I commanded, stepping forward and shoving my phone directly in front of his face.

Daniel glared at the screen, annoyed, until his eyes locked onto the photograph of the broken circle.

In a single second, all the color drained from his face. The arrogant, hot-headed expression he had worn all morning vanished, replaced by a raw, terrifying paleness I had never seen on him before. His lips parted, but no sound came out. His hands began to shake violently.

"Where... where did you get this?" he stammered, his voice dropping to an icy, terrified whisper.

"It was sent to my phone a minute ago," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs as I watched his reaction. "Daniel, what is that symbol? Who sent this to me?!"

Daniel didn't answer me. He reached out with trembling fingers, snatched the phone out of my hand, and stared at the image as if it were a bomb about to detonate in his palm.

He looked up at me, his eyes wide, hollow, and filled with genuine, unadulterated terror.

"Daniel!" I grabbed his arm, shaking him. "Talk to me! What is going on?!"

He leaned in close, his grip on my phone tightening until I thought the glass would shatter, and whispered into my ear with trembling breath:

“If Chelsea discovers what the project really is, neither of us will be safe.”

POV: CHELSEAMoney would become worthless when the world ended, but clean water could mean the difference between life and death.By three in the morning, the warehouse floor was quiet. Floodlights hung from the steel rafters, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete bay. I stood on the upper catwalk, leaning against the cold iron railing as I looked down at the initial shipment of commercial water filtration towers, industrial reverse-osmosis units, and sealed high-capacity storage tanks. They were safely stacked in Sector A, wrapped in heavy tarpaulins, looking like silent monoliths in the dark.I looked down at the tablet in my hands. Ordering tens of millions of dollars worth of survival gear in a single week was a guaranteed way to attract federal scrutiny or black-market predators. I couldn't afford either. To stay beneath the radar, I had designed a phased, decentralized procurement schedule spread across seventy-eight distinct supply chains. Every contract was routed t

POV: CHELSEA Daniel had stolen millions from my company, but the money was only the beginning of what he had hidden from me.Morning light filtered through the tinted glass of Smith’s high-security law office on Wall Street. On the marble table between us sat three thick black binders, filled with forensic financial statements that had taken his team all night to compile."Every single one of these transfers came from accounts you granted him sign-off authority on three years ago," Smith said, tapping a red line on the top sheet. "About thirty percent went to legitimate operational suppliers, freight, regional office leases, standard payroll. But the remaining seventy percent? Transferred out in lump sums of two to three million dollars to paper companies with no physical offices, no listed employees, and zero tax filings."I stared at the figures, my expression unreadable. "Aegis Strategic.""And four other shadow entities linked to it," Smith confirmed, his face grim. "He was metic

POV: CHELSEA My daughter had drawn a stranger standing behind my husband on the day he murdered me, and I was determined to discover who he was.The quiet office inside the warehouse felt instantly colder. I pulled Lily onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling frame as I pulled the crayon drawing closer under the harsh desk lamp. The heavy charcoal shape loomed over Daniel on the boat's deck, broad shoulders, a sharp, structured vest, and a strange emblem scratched near his shoulder."Lily," I said gently, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her. "Tell Mommy about this man. Did you hear him say anything before... before I fell into the water?"Lily stared at the black lines on the paper, her tiny fingers twisting the hem of her pajama top."He was standing right next to Daddy when they loaded the big silver boxes onto the boat," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Daddy looked scared of him, Mommy. The man had a dark coat on and he looke

POV: CHELSEA Daniel thought I was preparing to run away from him. He had no idea I was preparing to survive without him.I stood behind the double-paned security glass of the townhouse, looking down at his furious face on the intercom monitor. The evening air was cool, but sweat glistened on his forehead, his jaw clenching as he waited for an answer that made sense in his narrow, selfish world."I asked you a question, Chelsea!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm against the iron gate again. "Tons of grain? Industrial water purifiers? Solar grids? What kind of ridiculous, manic breakdown are you having? Is this your revenge because I brought Vicky to the city?!""Our marriage is over, Daniel," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. "What I buy, how I spend my money, and where I put my assets is no longer any of your concern. Leave my property before my security team physically removes you.""Are you insane?!" he barked, throwing his hands up in utter disbelie

  • 150-DAYS TO THE END    Chapter 4: One-Hundred and Fifty Days

POV: CHELSEA I had one hundred and fifty days to prepare for the end of the world, and I was not going to waste a single hour. The numbers burned into my mind like raw iron pressed against skin. November 20. Exactly five months before the sky collapsed and torrential rain submerged the entire Eastern Seaboard under dark, suffocating water.Staring at the laptop screen in Smith’s private office, I watched the red flags bloom across the financial ledger. Daniel hadn't just been cheating on me; he and Vicky had been systematically bleeding my inheritance dry, funneling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was setting up a quiet nest egg for his future with her. In reality, he was stealing paper money that would become utterly worthless in a few short months."Smith," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "Execute an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts immediately. File an ex parte injunction against Daniel for corporate e
