POV: CHELSEA

Money would become worthless when the world ended, but clean water could mean the difference between life and death.

By three in the morning, the warehouse floor was quiet. Floodlights hung from the steel rafters, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete bay. I stood on the upper catwalk, leaning against the cold iron railing as I looked down at the initial shipment of commercial water filtration towers, industrial reverse-osmosis units, and sealed high-capacity storage tanks.

They were safely stacked in Sector A, wrapped in heavy tarpaulins, looking like silent monoliths in the dark.

I looked down at the tablet in my hands. Ordering tens of millions of dollars worth of survival gear in a single week was a guaranteed way to attract federal scrutiny or black-market predators. I couldn't afford either.

To stay beneath the radar, I had designed a phased, decentralized procurement schedule spread across seventy-eight distinct supply chains. Every contract was routed through a different dummy holding company, handled by separate logistics brokers who had no knowledge of one another.

Phase One was simple: immediate survival essentials.

1. Water & Sanitation: High-volume filtration, UV purifiers, chemical treatment bulk packs, and subterranean water bladders.

2. Nutrition: Oxygen-absorbed freeze-dried grains, canned proteins, medicinal herbs, and sealed seeds for long-term agricultural farming.

3. Power & Infrastructure: Heavy-duty diesel generators, high-density lithium storage walls, commercial solar arrays, and hardened wiring.

4. Medical & Tactical: Surgical kits, broad-spectrum antibiotics, trauma blood units, field stretchers, and high-grade body armor.

5. Transport & Defense: Heavy-duty four-wheel-drive trucks, reinforced run-flat tires, satellite communications, and non-perishable fuel stabilizers.

"Mrs. Bennett," a voice spoke from the shadows behind me.

I turned to see Marcus walking down the steel catwalk. He was holding a leather folder and wearing a dark tactical jacket, his eyes sharp and alert despite the hour.

"How are the contractors progressing?" I asked, turning back toward the floor.

"The reinforcement teams started work at zero-four-hundred," Marcus reported. "We're lining the interior walls with double-layered steel plates and pouring reinforced concrete along the lower perimeter foundation. The loading bay doors are being replaced with blast-resistant hydraulic gates. We've also brought in a secondary crew to assess the elevated rural property outside the city."

I frowned slightly, staring into the dark corner of the warehouse floor. "The rural property won't be enough, Marcus."

"Ma'am?"

"It's high ground, but it's too exposed," I said, my voice dropping. "When the water covers the lower valleys, people will swarm the hills like desperate animals. A wooden house on a hill is a target. This warehouse, fortified, sealed, and completely self-sustaining, is where we make our stand first."

Marcus nodded slowly, making a note in his pad. "Understood. I'll reallocate the structural budget to focus ninety percent of the defensive reinforcement here."

He paused, his expression shifting from routine efficiency to quiet caution.

"There's something else, Mrs. Bennett. My team logged a security anomaly during the zero-one-hundred delivery from the fuel depot."

My eyes narrowed instantly. "What kind of anomaly?"

"Two of our transport trucks were shadowed after leaving the highway," Marcus said, pulling a printout from his folder. "A late-model black SUV with tinted windows and no front plate followed them for six miles along the ridge road. When my scout vehicle turned back to intercept and identify the occupants, the SUV pulled a fast U-turn and disappeared into the forest side routes."

A cold weight settled in my stomach.

"They were checking our routes," I said.

"Yes, ma'am," Marcus agreed. "They didn't try to intercept the load. They were mapping where the fuel was going."

"Effective immediately, alter all supply routes," I ordered, my voice hardening. "Every driver takes a secondary decoy route through the lower valley before turning toward the ridge. Double the armed escorts on all fuel and medical shipments. No one enters these gates without biometric verification and a direct clearance code from me."

"Consider it done," Marcus said, turning to carry out the orders.

I left the catwalk and made my way down to the residential living quarter built into the western side of the warehouse. The room was small, warm, and sealed off from the noise of the construction below.

Lily was sitting on the edge of the twin bed, her knees pulled tight against her chest. She was staring wide-eyed at an old tablet left on the nightstand. The screen showed a news article about a localized flash flood in South America, complete with photos of muddy water rushing through streets and submerged cars.

Her small body was shaking violently.

"Lily," I called softly, rushing across the room. I grabbed the tablet, flipped it screen-down on the table, and pulled her into my arms.

"Mommy..." she gasped, burying her face into my neck, her tiny fingers clutching the back of my sweater with terrifying force. "The water... it's coming back. It's going to swallow everything."

"Shh, baby. Look at me," I whispered, holding her face gently between my hands until her tear-stained eyes locked onto mine. "Listen to Mommy very carefully. We are not in Manhattan anymore. We are not on that boat. Daniel will never touch you again, and no one will ever push us into the water again. I built this place for us. We are safe."

She let out a ragged sob, nodding slowly against my hands. "You promise?"

"I promise with my life," I swore.

I stayed by her side until her breathing slowed and her small eyelids grew heavy, falling into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Gently pulling the blanket over her shoulders, I stepped back into the office, my mind racing. Every second counted. Every piece of equipment brought into this warehouse was another brick in the wall keeping my daughter alive.

My personal satellite phone vibrated on the desk.

I picked it up, checking the caller ID. It was the direct line for Mr. Vance, the senior account manager for Apex Water Technologies, the primary supplier of our industrial filtration units.

"Mrs. Bennett?" Vance's voice came through, sounding tense and unusually hesitant.

"Mr. Vance," I said, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. "I assume you're calling to confirm the second delivery of reverse-osmosis membranes for Friday?"

"Well... yes, ma'am, that shipment is locked in," Vance stammered slightly. "But I felt I needed to call you directly about something unusual that happened less than an hour ago."

"I'm listening."

"A secondary buyer reached out to our corporate sales division," Vance explained, dropping his voice as if someone might be listening. "They attempted to place an immediate, high-priority order for the exact same commercial-grade filtration units you reserved, the ones designed for large-scale, off-grid water processing. They offered to pay three times the market rate in cash if we diverted your Friday shipment to them."

A dark, lethal stillness settled into my chest.

"Who was the buyer, Mr. Vance?" I asked, my voice as cold as ice.

Vance rustled some papers on his end before answering. "The purchase request was filed under an LLC called Apex Maritime Defense... but the master corporate account attached to the wire authorization was registered under a name I believe you know."

"Give me the name," I commanded.

"Vicky Lee."

POV: VICKY Daniel had promised me a future built on Chelsea’s wealth, but now his wife was threatening to destroy everything we had planned. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the hotel suite overlooked the glittering skyline of Manhattan, but the luxury surrounding us felt thin, brittle, and ready to snap. Daniel paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged animal, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his knuckles white with tension."Pick up, Chelsea. Pick up the damn phone," he muttered under his breath, his voice laced with a mixture of raw panic and rising fury. He lowered the phone, stared at the screen, and cursed loudly before throwing it onto the velvet sofa. "She blocked my secondary line. She actually blocked it!"I sat on the plush leather armchair, nursing a glass of sparkling water, keeping my face perfectly composed. I knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this. For three years, I had learned the delicate art of managing Daniel Bennett, playing t

POV: CHELSEA Daniel had stolen millions from my company, but the money was only the beginning of what he had hidden from me.Morning light filtered through the tinted glass of Smith’s high-security law office on Wall Street. On the marble table between us sat three thick black binders, filled with forensic financial statements that had taken his team all night to compile."Every single one of these transfers came from accounts you granted him sign-off authority on three years ago," Smith said, tapping a red line on the top sheet. "About thirty percent went to legitimate operational suppliers, freight, regional office leases, standard payroll. But the remaining seventy percent? Transferred out in lump sums of two to three million dollars to paper companies with no physical offices, no listed employees, and zero tax filings."I stared at the figures, my expression unreadable. "Aegis Strategic.""And four other shadow entities linked to it," Smith confirmed, his face grim. "He was metic

POV: CHELSEA My daughter had drawn a stranger standing behind my husband on the day he murdered me, and I was determined to discover who he was.The quiet office inside the warehouse felt instantly colder. I pulled Lily onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her small, trembling frame as I pulled the crayon drawing closer under the harsh desk lamp. The heavy charcoal shape loomed over Daniel on the boat's deck, broad shoulders, a sharp, structured vest, and a strange emblem scratched near his shoulder."Lily," I said gently, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her. "Tell Mommy about this man. Did you hear him say anything before... before I fell into the water?"Lily stared at the black lines on the paper, her tiny fingers twisting the hem of her pajama top."He was standing right next to Daddy when they loaded the big silver boxes onto the boat," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Daddy looked scared of him, Mommy. The man had a dark coat on and he looke

POV: CHELSEA Daniel thought I was preparing to run away from him. He had no idea I was preparing to survive without him.I stood behind the double-paned security glass of the townhouse, looking down at his furious face on the intercom monitor. The evening air was cool, but sweat glistened on his forehead, his jaw clenching as he waited for an answer that made sense in his narrow, selfish world."I asked you a question, Chelsea!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm against the iron gate again. "Tons of grain? Industrial water purifiers? Solar grids? What kind of ridiculous, manic breakdown are you having? Is this your revenge because I brought Vicky to the city?!""Our marriage is over, Daniel," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. "What I buy, how I spend my money, and where I put my assets is no longer any of your concern. Leave my property before my security team physically removes you.""Are you insane?!" he barked, throwing his hands up in utter disbelie

  • 150-DAYS TO THE END    Chapter 4: One-Hundred and Fifty Days

POV: CHELSEA I had one hundred and fifty days to prepare for the end of the world, and I was not going to waste a single hour. The numbers burned into my mind like raw iron pressed against skin. November 20. Exactly five months before the sky collapsed and torrential rain submerged the entire Eastern Seaboard under dark, suffocating water.Staring at the laptop screen in Smith’s private office, I watched the red flags bloom across the financial ledger. Daniel hadn't just been cheating on me; he and Vicky had been systematically bleeding my inheritance dry, funneling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. He thought he was setting up a quiet nest egg for his future with her. In reality, he was stealing paper money that would become utterly worthless in a few short months."Smith," I said, my voice cold and smooth. "Execute an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts immediately. File an ex parte injunction against Daniel for corporate e
