A nurse came in and told them that visiting hours were over and they needed to leave. Vida wanted to protest and say she was going to stay and take care of her dad, but there was a caretaker, and if she was being honest with herself, she would only be a liability if she remained there. Moreover, she needed rest after the long flight she had. As they stepped out of the room, she noticed Axel making his way to her, but she managed to slip out without having to talk to him. She already did not like him, so she was not going to stand there and have a lengthy conversation with him.
She stepped into the Van Allen mansion and memories of her childhood filled her mind. She remembered running up and down the staircase while painting over the walls that had all been repainted when she turned into a teenager, and she remembered being a moody teenager while still living there. The house was pretty much the same, and everything felt the same aside from the fact that she felt replaced by that man—Axel Manchester.
"Who is this I see?" Maria's voice called from behind her.
"Everything here stayed the same," she murmured as she turned to see her nanny standing there. The woman was now well advanced in age than the last time she saw her, but aside from that, she was still a tall woman who towered over her.
"Little Miss Vida Van Allen!" Maria exclaimed, taking the girl into her arms and holding her tightly. Vida wrapped her hand over the woman and was happy to finally meet someone so comforting after hours of dragging it out with James and Axel.
"Oh gosh, I have missed you so much," she exclaimed when Maria finally released her from the grip she had on her.
"Yeah, sure, if a person misses you so much, they decide to move halfway across the world so they can't see you anymore," Maria said, gazing upon her softly. "I thought the next time I would see you would be at my funeral."
"Now don't say mean things like that; I have always wanted to visit; it's just that I have been so busy," Vida explained.
"But why do you look so gaunt?" Maria asked, pressing down on her hair gently and holding her face. "If you wanted to live on your own, I expected you to show up looking better than the last time I saw you and not worse."
"Do I look worse? I thought I was a pretty little miss," Vida joked.
"Is that a joke I hear?" Maria asked with a frown. "Someone must be angry or sad about something."
Vida took a deep breath; maybe she would have come home first and seen Maria before she headed out to the hospital; then she might have been in a better mood. Maria was truly the only person who understood her to the core. "As expected, you read me like an open book."
"Oh sunshine, what is bothering you? Tell me now and I will make it all go away." Hearing her say that took her back to her childhood when Maria would comfort her with those words, and suddenly everything felt better just because she said them.
"I did not know that dad was this sick, and I was just busy pursuing my ambition without thinking of him, and he collapsed twice, and no one even thought to tell me his daughter. His guardian changed, the CEO changed, and I had no idea about any of it," she said, and Maria nodded.
"Your father did not want to bother you; no matter how many times we all told him to call and tell you the truth, he just wanted you to live your life to the fullest. Of course, he wanted you home, but not as much as he wanted you to chase after all you wanted."
"It makes me feel worse to hear that," Vida groaned as she lowered herself into one of the chairs. Maria sat opposite her and took her hand, gently rubbing the backs of them. "I mean, now I am back and I feel so out of place. I am replaced by a stranger, and he was only able to get into this because I was away"
"I see you are talking about young Master Manchester."
"You know him?!" Vida asked with wide eyes at Maria, and she nodded.
"Young master Manchester has been especially good to us all; he takes very good care of everyone, especially Mr Van Allen."
"Are you sure? I did not get a good vibe from him at all." If Maria was saying that he was good, then maybe he was good, and she had judged him too quickly.
"Trust me, miss; he is a good man and I like him."
"I have to see for myself," Vida said, not because she did not want to trust Maria a bit because hearing her praise him only made her dislike him more. There was something about him, something off-putting; she could not yet place her hand on it but she was going to do so very soon.
Vida and Axel rushed in through the door as soon as Maria opened it up for them. "You are back. I was wondering how much...""How dare you do this to me?" Vida screamed, cutting Maria off and facing Axel."That is exactly what I wanted to ask you," Axel responded. Maria had always known Vida as a hot-headed person, but it was a bit strange for her to see Axel respond this way."You act for everyone around, but are you just a sly person underneath all of that?""A sly person? I was going to ask you that. Maybe you act this way, but you are just awful," he screams in her face."I can't just stand you right now," Vida screamed back as she turned and walked away. She was not going back to the room they shared, and Axel was aware of this. He hated how far this had gone right now, but he could not allow her to frame him for something he had not done. Seg was the one in the wrong right now, so why should he be the one to seek peace?"Axel, what..." Axel stormed off before Maria could finish
Vida was ready to storm off, but she could not since Axel was still holding onto her. She realised that if she could not storm off, she was going to go off on him and ask why he thought it was a good idea to do that in the middle of the room. Before she could get the words running, a business associate approached them and reminded them of what they were supposed to be portraying. They both acted as if nothing had happened and smiled. The rest of the night went by really fast as the business associates kept on coming their way.Everyone wanted to meet the new couple and talk business with Axel while Vida stood by his side like some sort of mannequin, smiling the entire night. By the end of the night, they were both angry at this situation, and once they were out of all the watching eyes, they began screaming at each other."What was that in there? Why did you kiss me?" Vida started the screaming. She could not believe he would act like a teenage boy."Why did you think it was a good id
After having two shots of tequila, Vida switched to a glass of low-content alcohol; as much as she wanted alcohol in her system, she did not want to have to make a fool of herself. Especially with Cynthia in the room, it would only give the older woman a reason to be mean to her and act like she was a nuisance. She was all by herself when a man approached her. She did not want to talk to him, but then something clicked in her mind: if Axel could entertain that woman who was obviously trying to be coy, then why couldn't she do the same? Tit for Tat."Why is such a pretty woman sitting all by herself?" the man asked, and she almost jumped at the cringy way of talking."Who said pretty women can't sit by themselves?" Vida asked, and he laughed, sitting beside her."Well, just in case it's a crime, I am going to keep you company for the night," he said, stretching his hand to her. She giggled, trying to act shy as she took his hand. They had a brief handshake before they pulled away."Her
Axel was a bit worried about how good Vida was looking; he feared that when people saw her, they would be unable to take their eyes off her. He wished he had a little more power to beg her not to wear something that made her look like a goddess. He felt jealousy seeping into his veins as they walked in, and the eyes of men lingered. He, however, felt proud at the same time. He loved how well she looked and how well she complimented him. He could hear people call them a 'Power Couple', and he had to admit that he liked it.Axel led her to the table where the top executives sat, and they sat as well. Axe took his time to do a proper introduction in a way that she would not forget. Her fears soon went away when they barely spoke about business and talked about luxury life and how their children were treating them. All Vida had to do was laugh and chime in whenever necessary; her night was going well until one of the assistants sat at their table."Mr. Manchester, I never thought you'd ma
The last time Vida felt this nervous was when she had to present her portfolio to a board for funding, and even then, once she got up on stage, she felt all of her fears go away. She was a bit afraid right now; it was the first public appearance she was making with Axel since they got back, and she feared something would go wrong that might blow their secret to the entire world. They were supposed to be a happy couple, but what if they ended up blowing their secret before the end of the night? She began to think of all the people she was going to meet at the event; they would want to know who Van Allen's daughter is and if she is up for business. They would want to talk about business jargon, and to date, Vida was barely able to hold onto a piece of thread in business school. Everything seemed to be flying over her head when she was seated in class, and anytime she tried to study on her own, it was almost a waste of time. She dressed in a red dress, as she wanted her clothes to assert
Vida never thought that she would be glad to hear that Axel was not making it home; she was not sure if she would be able to bear sitting there while this pretty girl tried to flirt with him. Axel knew that he was going to be late and by the time he got back home she would be in bed so he decided to call and inform her."Axel wouldn't be making it home tonight," she lied, wanting to see the reaction from Kyra and surely enough, the girl seemed pissed."Well, I guess we should be on our way," Kyra said at once, getting up ready to leave."Why don't you stay for dinner?" Vida did not want to have her for dinner but was trying to push her buttons as much as she could."I have a prior engagement." it was a lie and it was glaring, but none of the girls dared call her out on the lie.Vida saw them off and was glad to get Kyra out of her house at once and hoped that Anna never brought her back here. She went to take off her clothes before she came down for dinner. The dinner was silent as sh
