(Mia)

By the time Calder gets me into his suite, I am done pretending I don’t want this.

Apparently, so is he.

The door slams shut. My bag drops onto the floor. His jacket lands beside it a second later.

Then he is all over me.

Not careful. Not hesitant. Not trying to talk his way through anything.

(Calder)I pull her into me and hold her.“I love you, Mia. I choose you. But let’s clean this mess up that I made and start again properly.”“That sounds perfect.”“I still need to go home. I need to deal with my mother. I need to speak to Emma face to face. I need to make it clear where I stand.”She nods. “I know and you better run.”The attendant approaches and clears his throat. “Mr. Wynn, this is the last chance.”I look at Mia.Part of me wants to stay right here and let the plane leave without me.She knows it.“You need to go,” she says. “Go do what you have to do.”“I don’t like leaving you.”“You’re not leaving me. You’re going to sort things out.”I nod.“Don’t hold back on the competition,” I tell her.She looks at me. “What?”“Still try to win. Be who you are supposed to be. We’ll deal with the rest after.”“You think we can make this work long distance?”“Yes.”“With Emma pregnant. With your family. With all of it?”“It won’t be simple.” I kiss her. “But nothing has bee

(Calder)“No delays. No legal games. If Mia wants a divorce, let it happen.”My lawyer goes quiet on the other end of my call.“Calder, if the divorce goes through now, Common Ground goes.”“I know.”“There may still be options,” he offers.“I don’t want options. I’ve made up my mind.”He takes a breath. “All right.”“And I want the prenup and anything attached to it gone.”He is quiet again.“I want every copy destroyed. Paper, digital, all of it.”“That will take agreement from both sides.”“Start the process. I’m telling Mia about the clause. She’ll agree with me.”“Your mother will need to be informed.”“No. Absolutely not.”My life changes today. No more being a passenger. I’m taking control.Mia wants a divorce she can have it. But I’m not letting her go. I’m not giving up on her. I love her. I know that now. But we need to start over.“You do not contact my mother about any of my personal legal business again. Not this. Not the divorce. Not anything. If she wants to hear someth

(Mia)“What?!” I can’t even imagine how that would make Calder feel if he heard that. “Does Calder know about this clause?”I have to go to him and tell him.I have to tell him that I love him and that I refuse to let them use us like this.We can work the baby thing out somehow. I am not walking away from him when he needs me the most.My dad just looks at me. “He never knew. But Harriet told me she told recently him and the marriage was secure.”“Oh my god! You two are unbelievable! You mean she actually threatened to take it all away from him if he didn’t stay married?” This is something I never expected from my father.Poor Calder. What a dog act. He never told me. He agreed to the divorce. Then Dad says the thing that makes my blood run cold.“Calder does not know about your clause and neither does Harriet.”I stare at him. “What?”“He knows his side. Not yours.”For a second I cannot even think. Then all I can think is this:How am I supposed to tell him I love him and choose hi

(Mia)“Hi, Dad.” I say as I answer my phone.“Hi, sweetheart. How’s everything?”“The comp is going so good. We have a real shot at top three,” I say as I smile at Lena.“I never doubted it”I look at the sketches spread across the table. Lena is across from me, pretending not to listen and failing badly.“We’ve got a strong direction now,” I say. “It’s coming together.”“How’s that thing with Jonah?” he asks.“All sorted.”“Good, good. And… how are you?”I know he means Calder and me and I guess it’s time to say it out loud.“I’ve decided to end my marriage.” My heart squeezes as I say it. Tears well in my eyes.I think I’ve made a mistake letting him go, but it is best for Calder.Dad asks, “does Calder know?”“Yes. We agreed last night.”“Did he tell you he’ll walk away now?” Dad asks again.“Yes. Why?”He exhales. “Don’t do anything yet. I need to come and talk to you.”“About what?”“There are things you need to know.”***“No, Dad. Don’t call this protection.” I cannot believe w

(Mia)“So now we aren’t using the tech?” Lena asks.I drop into the chair across from her and pull my laptop toward me. “No.”She leans back. “Mia.”“It wouldn’t be fair,” I say.“It would be smart,” Lena says.“It’s not ours. It’s Sofia’s. She deserves to use it herself.”Lena looks like she wants to argue but instead she has a pained look on her face until it gives way to release, “you’re right. I just hate losing that edge. Do you think Jonah will listen to her now?”“I think he will. And I think he will be blown away. Sofia deserves that. I like her.”“Me too. We need to help her fight against the same thing we are fighting against. Old school attitudes.”“Exactly, Anyway, we already have an edge. I think I’ve found a way to prove it will work.”“Good because I’ve been wracking my brain all day.”I open the notes I saved earlier and turn the screen toward her. “Read this.”Lena reads the title. “Circular Urban systems?”“I started with circular agriculture,” I say. “But this can g

(Mia)“Jonah.”He keeps walking along the lobby of his hotel. I’ve been waiting here for him to return.Sofia said he was usually gone two hours in the mornings for his run.“Jonah.”This time he stops and turns. He looks annoyed before he even says a word. “What?”“I need to talk to you.”He gives a short laugh. “Really? You’ve had years.”“I know. But I’m here now. So stop being ridiculous.”He starts to turn away again, and I step in front of him.“No. You don’t get to use our past against me anymore. If that’s all this is, a publicity stunt so you can play victim, know my father will not let that end well for you.”His expression changes, but not by much. “Fine. Talk.”I take a breath. I came here for this. I am not backing out now.“I’m sorry.”He looks away and then back at me. “For which part?”“For all of it.” I keep my eyes on his. “For hurting you. For not being honest. For letting you build something with me when part of me was somewhere else.”He goes quiet.I keep going b
