I won.

That was the thought that crossed my mind as I watched Gabrielle, my Gabrielle, scribble her signature onto the documents.

They thought they had cornered her into this. Her boss was sweating bullets, and my lawyer thought he was saving the day. But this had been my endgame from the very start.

Two years ago, I saw her across a crowded room at a charity gala. She had looked unimpressed by the room full of athletes and billionaires, completely focused on making her rounds like someone who had a job to do and no time for games.

I had tried to catch her eye, to flash the smile that usually got me whatever I wanted, and she had walked right past me without a second glance.

Her beauty was everything I coveted. And as a competitor who refused to lose, I didn’t know how to stop until I had what I wanted.

It took me many months to figure out she was working under Arthur Sterling. It took many more of asking for favors and pulling strings behind the scenes to finally get her assigned as my personal handler six months ago.

And then the real torture began.

I played the part of the reckless, arrogant athlete because it was the only way to get her to look at me, to get her to touch me, to get her to snap.

I pushed every boundary I could find. I wanted her to crack. I wanted her exasperation, her fury, anything that meant she actually saw me.

But for six months, she remained impenetrable.

She drafted my NDAs, she glared at me with disdain, and she kept me at arm's length.

I knew I had to do something drastic if I wanted her to look at me and not see a project.

So I forced the issue. I made sure the angle of the kiss was clearly captured, and I made sure my guy at the gossip blog had the file within minutes.

I didn't want to ruin her, and a part of me hated the panic in her eyes today, but desperation made a man do ugly things. Now, she was legally bound to me for thirty days.

Thirty days to prove I wasn't just a headline.

Thirty days to make her see me.

Thirty days to make her fall for me.

Every single day for the next month, I’ll invent a new way to win her heart. And this new project of mine? It would be titled: Thirty Ways To Win A Heart.

“How are we playing this now that everyone has signed?” my agent asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Whatever needs to be done should be done quick. We have to head to the Arena to start prepping for tonight’s game.”

“We can go to the arena together, and a video of me watching him practice can be leaked,” Gabrielle chimed in, her voice clipped and professional.

“That doesn’t work,” Arthur shot the idea down immediately. “Your first official announcement as a couple shouldn’t be a video of you watching him from the sidelines like a fan. We need something more intimate. Use your head, Gabrielle. This is your job.”

“Well, pardon me for being slow. I’ve never had to clean up a PR mess that involved me,” Gabrielle bit back.

I held back a laugh.

The girl was so brazen. The sheer fire in her attitude made my blood rush every single time she opened her mouth.

"We need to decide on how to go about this and get the first post up before noon," Arthur breathed, giving Gabrielle a stern look before turning his gaze to me. "I already have some people running with the romance angle. We need to confirm it as soon as possible.”

“How about we capture a natural moment where we’re both in bed as a couple?” Gabrielle suggested after a brief, tense silence. “It’d be a selfie, of course, if we want it to look authentic. One of us can pretend to still be asleep while the other takes an unaware picture of the cuddly moment.”

“Good idea. Let’s run with it!” Arthur exclaimed.

“So,” I perked up, crossing my arms. “Which one of us is going to be asleep, and which one is clicking the camera?”

“It’s only natural that the one who is obsessed with being in a relationship with me clicks the picture. It’d look much nicer from his angle,” Gabrielle said. It was obvious she was throwing a jab at me.

“Is that so?”

I stood up and closed the distance between us, stepping into her designated three-foot bubble despite the warning flash in her eyes. I reached out, my fingers catching the lapel of her expensive shirt.

"What are you doing?" she hissed under her breath, her jaw clenching.

“Don’t tell me you plan on looking this stiff in the 'natural, just-waking-up' picture idea you just pitched?” I murmured back, letting a slow, genuine smirk touch my lips. I let my knuckles brush against her collarbone, feeling her breath hitch. "If you're trying to sell the world that we've been deeply in love, you might want to ditch the funeral attire. No woman deeply in love with her man wears a button-down choked up to her throat so early in the morning, and definitely not while in bed.”

"I am dressed professionally," she gritted out through a bitter smile.

“Yes,” I agreed. “And you look absolutely gorgeous. Except this is not the time to be dressed professionally.”

“Kayden—”

"Don’t argue with me," I teased, letting my hand slide down to lightly catch her hip, pulling her an inch closer than our rules allowed. I leaned down so my lips brushed the shell of her ear, keeping my voice low enough for only her to hear. "Go upstairs, Gabrielle. Put on one of my shirts, let it hang off your shoulder and sprawl yourself out on my bed.”

Her brows drew together. “Excuse you?”

A breathy scoff escaped my nostrils as I stepped back, letting my eyes trail down her frame. “If we're going to play this game, Gabrielle, you're going to look like a woman who actually belongs to a man like me."

Since I had been working with Kayden for six months, I had never once seen him deliriously drunk. Not once.I had seen him tipsy. I had seen him hungover. I had seen him drink enough to become louder than usual at parties and cockier than usual around women. But I had never seen him like this. And honestly? It wasn’t a terrible sight. The man was a dramatic drunk. He talked a lot. He moved a lot. And, dare I say, he was the cutest when he was drunk.Well… That was until everything began falling apart.“Oh, God.” I tightened my grip around his waist as he stumbled beside me, nearly taking us both into the wall of the elevator. “Kayden.”“I’m fine,” he slurred. “Yeah? Well, that’s all thanks to me,” I replied, holding him tightly.“I was trying to avoid the wall,” he said. I stared at him. He stared back at me with the most serious expression I’d ever seen on his face. “I was.”“Of course you were.”The elevator doors slid shut behind us, trapping us inside the small, mirrored space.K

Kayden came to a fucking club.So naturally, as both his handler and his supposed girlfriend, I had to come after him.It was literally my job to babysit him, and he was making sure I put in the work.By the time I stepped into the club, I was furious. God, I was so fucking furious that putting it into words would just be a disservice to myself. The music was loud enough to vibrate through my chest, the bass pulsing beneath my feet as bodies moved around me in a blur of expensive clothes, flashing lights, and alcohol. Colored lights swept across the room, illuminating faces for half a second before plunging them back into darkness.I hated everything about this place. But mostly, I hated that I had come looking for one particular idiot, who I spotted almost immediately.Kayden was impossible to miss.He was sprawled across a booth near the back of the club, a bottle in one hand and a woman pressed so close to his side that there was barely enough space between them for air.Another wo

“I wasn’t cleared.”Silence.Coach stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether to yell or simply walk away. “You weren’t cleared to play?”“I never said I was.”“Then why the hell were you on that ice?”I looked down at my hands.Because I didn’t know.Because sitting still with my thoughts had become unbearable.Because lying in that penthouse with Gabrielle beside me would’ve been worse.Because every time I closed my eyes, I heard her voice.I’m ashamed to be associated with you.Maybe I’d wanted the pain.Maybe I needed something loud enough to drown out everything else. But I wasn’t about to say any of that.So I looked back at my coach and answered, “Because there was a game and I wanted to play it.”The man had a look of disbelief on his face before, but it deepened even further. “That’s your excuse?”“It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why I played.” “You think this is funny, Alvarez? You think you’re untouchable because you’re good?” He pointed at me. “You walk onto that r

What am I doing here? What am I doing here? What am I doing here? The voice in my head buzzed and buzzed and fucking buzzed. My life was a mess. The only thing I had was money, but even that didn’t matter.I was aching—literally and metaphorically. Why was I moving on this ice?Who was I enduring this pain for?My mother? She was long dead. I was sure her carcass wouldn’t care about what I did with my life.My father and the family he abandoned me for?Just so he could get more money from me.Gabrielle?Perhaps.She said she loved watching me on the ice.But in the same breath, she said she was ashamed of me.What was it about me that caused her to be ashamed? Was it my physical appearance? Was it my nonchalance? Was it the crazy things the tabloids wrote about me on a daily basis?Perhaps it was because I inherited my mother’s broken heart. But that wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault that I was born with a broken heart and a mind that often drove me to the edge.It wasn’t my fault.

The air inside the penthouse had become suffocating. It had nothing to do with the temperature. The room was cool enough that I could feel the air-conditioning brushing against my skin every time I moved. But somehow, every breath I took felt thick, as though the oxygen had been replaced with something heavier.Something I had to fight my way through.Kayden and I had barely spoken since the doctor left. And yet, the silence between us was the loudest I'd ever heard.I couldn’t even blame Kayden for it.I had spent the entire day pushing him around.Eat this.Take your medication.Lie down.Don’t go out.Don’t drink.Listen to me.And when he fought me, I’d fought harder.Everything I had done had been for his own good. I knew that. I could justify every decision I’d made if I had to.But that didn’t mean I hadn’t been difficult. And maybe that was why I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d looked at me earlier.Like he couldn’t understand me.Honestly, I couldn’t understand myse

“Good news,” the doctor said, closing the medical bag at her feet. “It’s not broken.”The breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding escaped me.“But he’s so heavily bruised that I’m tempted to ask what happened.” Her eyes flicked briefly toward the bedroom. “But because my discretion was requested, I’ll not ask.”I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”“I also want to advise against playing tomorrow.” She smiled back at me. “But Mr. Alvarez doesn’t exactly look like a man who can be reasoned with.”A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. That was one way to put it.“So, in the end, I can only provide the best treatment I can in such a short amount of time and hope for the best outcome.” She picked up the small tube of ointment she’d prescribed and handed it to me. “Make sure he takes the painkillers. And massage his ribs with the ointment every hour.”“Okay.” I nodded. “Got it.”“And make sure he gets enough rest. It’ll help his body heal itself at least.”“Alright.” I nodded again, me
