~~~Soraya~~~
My dad’s email had been opened. The screenshot proved it. The full contract attachment marked as Read.
My heart had stopped functioning.
I swallowed hard.
“Declan…” My voice broke.
He didn’t seem to panic, it was really surprising.
He took my phone, dialed my dad immediately, and put it on speaker. His arm stayed firmly around my shoulders.
“Mr. Rivera,” Declan said, calm and steady.
“It’s Declan. I know you just received something. Before you say anything, please hear us out.”
    ~~~Declan~~~The doctor led us into a small consultation room off the main hallway, the kind of space clearly designed for exactly this purpose. soft chairs, a box of tissues sitting a little too deliberately on the low table between us, the fluorescent lights dimmed just enough to feel gentler than the rest of the hospital."First off. Soraya's stable," the doctor began, sitting across from the three of us. "I want to lead with that, because I know what I'm about to explain is going to be difficult to hear. The surgery went well. She's out of immediate danger.""Oh-kaay?" Maya said quietly, her hands twisted together in her lap."But," the doctor continued gently,"The pregnancy was ectopic. That means it implanted outside the uterus, in this case in one of her fallopian tubes, rather than where it should have. Ectopic pregnancies are never viable, and they become dangerous very quickly once the tube can no longer stretch to accommodate the growth. That's what caused the internal bl

    ~~~Declan~~~They made me leave the room. I fought it for exactly as long as it took one of the nurses to say the words."you're in the way, you need to let go." before I finally let go of Soraya's hand and stumbled backward into the hallway, watching through the narrowing gap of the closing door as they wheeled equipment in around her, her face pale and twisted with pain that I couldn't do a single thing to take away.The waiting room down the hall felt like a different planet entirely. Fluorescent lights humming overhead, a television playing something with the volume too low to actually hear, rows of uncomfortable chairs bolted to the floor like someone had designed the entire room specifically to make sure nobody who sat in it ever felt at ease.I sat down and immediately stood back up, unable to stay still, my mind replaying the sound of her voice cracking under the pain over and over until it felt carved into the inside of my skull.I don't know how long I paced before I heard
    ~~~Soraya~~~The doctor came back forty minutes later, longer than I could stand waiting, every one of those minutes stretching thin and endless while Declan sat frozen beside my bed, his hand still locked around mine like letting go might make the whole room collapse on itself."The test confirmed it," she said, closing the door gently behind her. "You're pregnant, Soraya. Early, based on your hormone levels, somewhere around six weeks, if I had to estimate."Six weeks. The same six weeks Declan had been gone. The math landed somewhere deep in my chest, heavy and disorienting, a whole other life quietly starting the same week mine had fallen apart."Okay," I said in a whisper.My free hand drifting instinctively to my stomach like it might actually feel different now that I knew. "Okay…” I breathe out. “What...what happens now?""We'll want to monitor things closely, given everything else going on with your leg and the medications we've had you on," The doctor said, her tone calm a

    ~~~Soraya~~~Declan hadn't let go of my hand since Maya and Caleb left the room, and some stubborn, exhausted part of me hadn't asked him to. We sat there in a silence that wasn't quite comfortable but wasn't quite unbearable either, six weeks of separation still sitting heavy between us even after everything he'd just told me."You should sleep," he said quietly, his thumb brushing slow, absent circles over the back of my hand. "You look exhausted.""I am exhausted." I let my head rest back against the pillow, watching him from under heavy eyelids. "Doesn't mean I want you to leave."Something in his face softened at that, relief and disbelief tangled together, like he hadn't actually expected me to want him to stay after everything.A nurse knocked before either of us could say anything else, pushing a small cart into the room with the same brisk efficiency I'd gotten used to over the past three days. "Ms. Rivera, we need to run a few routine scans before the doctor finalizes your
    ~~~Soraya~~~The door clicked shut, and it was just the two of us, the quiet in the room suddenly so loud I could hear the monitor beside my bed ticking off every slow, unsteady beat of my own heart.Declan didn't move from where he stood. He just looked at me, really looked, the way he used to before all of this happened, and something in my chest twisted so hard I had to look away first."You shouldn't have come," I said quietly, staring at the blanket instead of him. "You made your choice long time ago. You don't get to just walk back in because you saw a headline.""Soraya….""No." My voice cracked, sharper than I meant it to be, all the exhaustion and grief of the last six weeks finally finding somewhere to go. "You don't get to do that. You left. You didn't call, you didn't explain, you just disappeared, and then I find out you signed a million-dollar contract to stay there without a single word to me about any of it. And now you're standing in my hospital room like that's supp

    ~~~Declan~~~I booked the flight at two in the morning, sitting on the floor of my apartment with my back against the wall, hands shaking too hard to type my own passport number in correctly the first two times. My father was asleep three floors up. I didn't leave a note. I didn't tell the team, didn't tell my agent, didn't tell a single living soul what I was actually doing except the empty apartment walls that had never once felt like home since the day I arrived in this country.Eighteen months. That had been the plan. Quiet, careful, patient, buying my own way out with my own money so my father never had a reason to touch her life again.But nobody had planned for this. Nobody had told me the cost of staying quiet might be Soraya lying in a hospital bed on the other side of the world with a shattered leg and a headline calling her injury "more complicated than initially reported," and me finding out through a locker room conversation about somebody else's fantasy roster.I didn't
