“I won, Ash. Admit defeat. Three years are up.”
Her father’s voice crackled through the phone, smug and unyielding. Ash rolled her eyes, exhaustion threading through her. He never missed a chance to remind her of that stupid bet. “Tonight marks three years,” she shot back. “Why not wait till morning? Then we will know if you truly won.” He scoffed. Ash knew he despised Rowan, but she didn’t care. She would rather mate with a man she loved than be handed off to someone chosen for her. She watched her mother suffer the same fate and could not do anything to comfort her until she died. She was not going to let that happen to her. Besides, she had been with Rowan for three years…three years, and he had never once hurt her. She ended the call before he could say more and slipped her phone into her bag, a smile tugging at her lips as excitement fluttered in her chest. Tonight she would finally seal the bond with the man she loved. The hallway felt longer than usual as she walked, her steps light, hopeful. She stopped in front of the door, reached for the handle, and pushed it open. And her world shattered. Her arms fell uselessly to her sides. The smile died on her lips as shock stole the air from her lungs. “Oh, Rowan… you are going to kill me,” a breathless moan slipped from the woman’s mouth. Elena. Her best friend. Rowan lay beneath her on the bed, Elena’s body grinding against his, the two of them so lost in each other they hadn’t even noticed Ash. “Ash!” Elena’s eyes snapped to hers. Guilt flashed across her face for half a second before it hardened into something uglier, something defensive, almost resentful. Ash wanted to move, but she couldn’t. She just stood there, unable to cry or even scream. The only person she had trusted after her mother was riding the man she was meant to mate with tonight, the man who had promised her forever. Her mind scrambled, searching desperately for missed signs, warnings she had been too blind or too in love to see. “Why?” The word tore out of her, fragile and breaking. Rowan stood up, completely unashamed, his nakedness a cruel reminder that this was real, that this wasn’t a nightmare she could wake up from. “I am sorry, Ash,” he said quietly. “But Elena is my mate. I should have told you sooner.” She laughed, an ugly, disbelieving sound. “She’s your mate?” Two years ago, it had been foretold that Rowan’s mate was dead. How was Elena suddenly his mate? “Since when?” Ash demanded. “A year ago,” he answered. “We felt the spark. That’s how it started. I was going to tell you tonight… end things properly. I didn’t expect you to come so early.” A year ago. Her chest constricted painfully. That was when she had introduced Elena to him. “Have you forgotten what you promised me?” Ash said, her voice rising despite herself. “I love you, Rowan. Why can’t you choose me?” She didn’t care if she sounded desperate. She didn’t care about pride or dignity. She had loved him from the moment they met. She had been so obsessed with him that she was even willing to go against everyone for him. She didn’t want to lose him, not this fast. His gaze flickered. Something that resembled hesitation, doubt even. And for one fragile, foolish second, hope bloomed again in her chest. Just as Rowan opened his mouth to speak, Elena suddenly grabbed his wrist. “You can’t possibly choose her over me,” she said sharply. “I am your mate, Rowan. Without me, you will never have legitimate heirs. I am your fate, your future.” Her words snapped his attention fully to her. ‘She is right, Rowan. I won’t mate with an omega. She is useless to us.’ Rowan’s wolf growled, his expression shifting. His shoulders sagged as he exhaled, and then his gaze returned to Ash, heavy and conflicted. “I can’t, Ash,” he said quietly. “All my life, I wanted a mate. When I was told I would never have one, it destroyed me. Now that I finally do… I finally have hope. Don’t you want me to be happy, Ash?” Ash took a step back, disgust curling in her stomach. This was the same man who had promised her heaven and earth, who had sworn she was all he needed. And now he was lecturing her about mates and happiness. She knew how sacred the mate bond was. She knew rejecting destiny was dangerous. But knowing didn’t make it hurt any less. She stood there, frozen, unable to accept it, unable to fight it. “I know how much you love him,” Elena said softly. “But I can’t let you have him. I am sorry, Ash.” The apology sounded hollow. Insincere. The ease with which Elena had lied to her for a year made the betrayal burn even deeper. How did she not notice anything? Ash’s heart shattered silently as she watched the two people who were supposed to protect her standing together, unashamed, entwined. She turned and ran. Tears blurred her vision as she burst through the packhouse, servants staring, murmurs following her. She didn’t stop. She couldn’t. She ran until the walls disappeared, until the woods swallowed her whole. Branches tore at her skin as she pushed deeper into the forest, her lungs burning, her thoughts spiraling. She didn’t slow down, didn’t care where she was going, until her foot caught on something unseen. She fell hard, rolling, her back slamming into a tree before she finally stopped. Pain shot through her leg. She cried out and sat up. She suddenly felt a presence and raised her head. Three men stood in front of her. They looked rough, homeless, and dirty. Ash dragged her gaze along their faces and saw the mark of a rogue on each of them. Their eyes lingered too long, too wrong. “Well, boys,” the one in the middle laughed, stepping forward, “looks like tonight just got interesting.” They moved closer. Ash tried to stand, but her leg screamed in protest. Panic clawed at her chest as she searched the darkness, only to realize how far she had run. If not for the full moon, everything would have been completely dark. She thought of her bag and hissed, remembering she had dropped it in Rowan’s room. Without her phone, she could only rely on saving herself. “Please,” she whispered. “If you let me go, I will reward you. My father is wealthy. You will be handsomely paid.” They exchanged looks. Hope flickered, then died just as fast as it came. The leader grabbed her roughly. She screamed as fabric tore and fear overwhelmed her. Her shirt was tossed to the side, leaving her in her bra. “No…!” ‘Mate!’ Her wolf’s voice rang out suddenly, sharp and commanding. Her body went still. She turned her head and met a pair of eyes, metallic, piercing, impossibly intense. They pulled at something deep inside her, igniting her heart in a way that stole her breath. Everything changed in that instant.Getting to their room, he gently sat her down on the chair and knelt in front of her. “Do you want us to continue?” He asked shamelessly, his tone light. It made her smile, a little taken aback by his playful side. It was her first time hearing him joke.“We can’t. I haven’t seen Nora in days, I have missed her,” she replied.“I can wait a few more minutes. I waited years to find you, and then had to wait again after I did,” he said. His words stirred a twinge of guilt in her, even though she was still upset with him.Rising, Dane leaned in and kissed her, lingering for a moment before pulling away.“Get changed. I will see you later,” he said, though he sounded like he had something else to attend to.“Are you still busy?” She asked, concern creeping into her voice.“No. The person who sent you away that morning is here. I need to have a word with him.” His tone turned cold, all traces of playfulness gone. He looked genuinely intimidating now. Without another word, he walked out.Ash
Ashley’s breath hitched, her eyes widening as her lips parted, blinking rapidly. Her mind went blank, and for some reason, a pang of guilt struck her at the sight of his anger. He looked like she had betrayed him.“You… you knew,” she breathed, her gaze darting between his.“How long were you going to hide it from me?” He asked. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. Her expression said everything her mouth could not. The guilt she had been holding onto suddenly vanished, replaced by the memory of how his man had humiliated her that day. Why was she feeling guilty when he was the one who had discarded her after using her? She was the one who had every right to be angry.“So what?” She spat. His brows knitted as he stared at her in disbelief. He couldn’t believe she had just said that. So what? As if there was nothing wrong with what she did.“So what?” He repeated, as though confirming he heard her right.Swallowing, Ashley’s expression hardened. “Yes. Why are you acting li
Four days passed without Ashley seeing Dane. Despite telling herself he was just busy, the thought unsettled her. Not even his shadow had appeared, and it felt less like work and more like he was avoiding her.Standing by the car door, Ashley’s eyes lit up as she watched Silas approach. “Is he coming?” She asked as soon as he got closer.“Alpha has something to do,” Silas replied. Ashley had expected that answer, yet disappointment still crept in, making her wonder what was really going on.“Again?” She asked, and Silas simply shook his head, as if to say there was nothing he could do.“Alright. Let’s go,” she said, her voice lacking its usual brightness as she stepped into the car.Meanwhile, from the balcony, a pair of indifferent eyes watched the car drive away, hands tucked into his pockets. It was Dane. As much as he wanted to finally hold her in his arms, anger still lingered…anger that she had hidden the truth from him, despite knowing he was searching for her. So he kept his d
Dane walked out of the villa, making his way to the car waiting for him when Silas called, “Alpha,” his expression serious.Just as Dane turned, his gaze landed on Ashley, who was making her way out of the villa. She was dressed in a yellow sundress, slit at the thighs and off-shoulder. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun, her makeup light yet ethereal. Dropping his gaze to her bare collarbone, he felt the urge to cover it, his mind immediately drifting to a necklace. He had noticed she rarely wore one unless she was attending a special event.Lowering his gaze further, a raw desire stirred within him at the sight of the silver anklet laced around her ankle. Why was she looking more attractive today?“I am ready,” she said when she reached his side, her brows knitting in confusion when he didn’t respond. She began to feel small under his scrutiny and opened her mouth to speak when he finally said, “Get in. I will be right there,” earning a nod from her before she walked to the other s
The following morning, in another room, Dane sat behind his desk, going through something on his computer while Silas stood before him.“What did Father say?” Dane asked.“He said you should consider the proposal and return to the pack to meet with them,” Silas replied, causing Dane to lift his gaze to him.“I deserve to be punished. The information was leaked by one of our men,” Silas added apologetically, lowering his head.Dane returned his attention to the computer. “What about Luna?”“She slept in Mr. Echabod’s room last night,” Silas said.Dane’s focus snapped back to him, his gaze turning colder.“Put my father on hold for now,” he ordered as he rose from his seat and headed for the door.Back in Echabod’s room, Ashley helped him out of bed.“I can take care of myself now. You can go. He might need you,” Echabod urged.“He does not need me. He has people around him. He probably would not even notice I am gone,” she said.Echabod sho
“I hope you get well soon, Mr. Echabod. I will leave you two to catch up,” Dane said before excusing himself.Once he was gone, Echabod let out a deep sigh of relief and leaned back against the headboard.“Why are you acting weird?” Ashley asked.Echabod scoffed, finding it hard to believe she was truly unaware of everything that had just happened. Was she really that clueless, or was she pretending to be?“Did you really not feel the tension earlier?” He asked. She shook her head, staring at him in confusion.“Wow. You are unbelievable. I think I finally understand why it took you a whole year to realize Rowan and Elena were cheating,” he said.Ashley smacked his arm and shoved him lightly in annoyance.“What does that have to do with you acting weird?” She snapped.“I am sorry, okay?” He said with a snort, offering a playful apology.A few seconds later, Echabod’s expression shifted. “He is the one, right?” He asked.Ashley’s smile faded
He might not have recognized her face, but he was certain of one thing, his mate did not have blue eyes. Hers were black. Pure, beautiful, and unmistakable. The only woman he knew with light blue eyes and black hair was Ashley. It couldn’t be her. He had already confirmed that it wasn’t. And he wo
“Hey! Watch it!” Nora snapped, her voice slicing through the hum of conversation as she shot a venomous glare at the man who had just collided with her.“You were the one who hit me. Why are you yelling at me?” He shot back, his own glare meeting hers with equal force, sharp, unyielding, and unapol
“That jerk! How did he get in?” She muttered, her face twisting in annoyance as she walked back into the room.A relieved sigh escaped her, glad she had evaded suspicion for now. The Alpha King’s death had come at the perfect time, giving her the chance to avoid being marked by him.The mating cere
On getting home, Ashley met the entire pack house in chaos.Pack members who didn’t usually gather during the weekends were all present, engaged in intense discussions.“Ashley!” Nora called, running up to her.“What’s going on? Why is everyone here?” She inquired, both curious and confused.“The A
