“Agent Gold, Sheriff Gold,” Randy said with a little nod as he looked at the creature on the ground.“Randy,” Lindsay replied with a little smile. “Do you need help with the cage, or can you handle bringing it over by yourself?” Wren asked him.Randy answered, “I can get it, sir. I’ll be right back.” Randy turned and went back to the van. He opened the back and soon came back with a collapsible cage. Lindsay had been holding the tranquilizer gun at the ready. She quickly and carefully made the shot, striking the creature in the shoulder with the dart. Lindsay picked up another dart and reloaded the gun. She aimed it and readied for the second shot if it was needed. It was almost to the fence when it began to stagger. When it reached the fence, it placed a paw on the wire, and Lindsay shot it with the second dart. Within seconds, it fell into a heap in the field.Lindsay raised her head from the scope and looked at the others. Wren was still holding the binoculars and seemed unconcerned about what had just happened. Andy and Annie were another story. They had both drawn their weapons and had been ready to start shooting the creature if it had made its way through the fence.“You two can put those away now,” Lindsay told Andy and Annie.They both hesitated before putting their guns back in their holsters. “We need binoculars. This thing has teeth. It has a lot of teeth that popped out of its gums like switchblades. It just ate a mouse, so you may want to watch this thing with me,” Lindsay told him.“Here,” Wren said as he handed her a dart. “If it does anything or tries to go anywhere while I’m inside, knock it out for me.”She smiled and carefully took the dart from him. She held it as she watched him go inside to get what he needed. After the door closed behind him, she slid the dart into the tranquilizer gun and prepared it to fire if necessary. She raised the rifle and began watching the creature through the scope again. As she watched, it calmly moved around the field, chasing butterflies and occasionally eating flowers and other things it found. After a few moments, she heard the door open again and could see Wren out of the corner of her eye. He walked to where she was sitting and placed something on the chair beside her. “Agent Gold,” Wren answered his phone as he stepped onto his front porch to join his wife.“Sir, this is Andy Baxter. Annie and I are on a call not far from your house. A lady said that she saw a green, fur-covered creature in her yard, and it approached her dog as if it were going to attack it,” Andy told him.“Hang on, Andy, and let me pass this on to your boss,” Wren said as Lindsay looked at him.“Is this about a green thing that looks like a weird puppet from a children’s show or something?” Lindsay asked Wren before he could say anything.Wren asked Andy, “Does it look like a puppet of some kind?” “I didn’t see it, sir, but that’s how the lady described it. Do you know what it is?” Andy asked.“No, I don’t,” Wren answered. Wren looked at Lindsay. She pointed into the neighbor’s field that joined their yard. Andy led the way out of the sheriff's department and into the parking lot. Before they got in their patrol cars, he gave Annie the address and told her to follow him to the location. Her response was just a big smile and nodding of her head. He got into his car and pulled out of the parking lot, watching to ensure she followed his instructions. He was thankful that they were in separate cars. He was more able to talk to women than when Sheriff Gold took over, but he still did not like to do it. Annie's constant chatter drove him crazy. He would sometimes go on patrol just to get some peace and quiet.Throughout the drive to the area, he kept looking in his rearview mirror to make sure Annie was still behind him. He was running through all the possible scenarios of what could happen in his head as he drove. One was that the woman who called was hallucinating, and nothing was actually there. She had made sure they had no questions, and the information between the day and evening shifts was exchanged before she left for the day, the same as she always did.
