Gael
I see that Rayka is already at the end of the eating area, and as she is walking slowly, I run to catch up with her.
“Rayka, wait.” I call out as soon as I'm close, so she can hear me.
She stops and turns to me; from her expression I imagine she is surprised that I have come after her.
“Gael, what do you want?” She looks suspicious.
“Accompanying her, in Scouts, we are taught that we should always stand next to our partner in a system of partnerships.”
“I thought my partner would be Liz.”
Only then I realize that I decided to be her partner, thinking it would be the best, but I didn't think about what she wants, it may be that she prefers to be with her friend and not with me.
“I asked to be your partner, but if you don't want my company, it's okay.” I say leaving the final decision to her.
“It's not that, I was just surprised, and I don't mind us being a couple.”
“Good, so where are we going?”
“Here at the stadium, there is a Cowboys store, I need to buy some accessories before we go to the park.” She says walking back.
“Buy a ball or a cowboy hat?” I ask jokingly.
“Very funny you, huh, because, you should know that I already have the complete Cowboys uniform at home, including a hat.”
It's not surprising that she cheers for them, not even that she owns a team hat, after all we are in Texas, here children are born with a hat on their heads.
“Now you know what team I root for, but what about you?”
“The Falcons, although since moving to Miami I've started rooting for the Dolphins too.”
“Rooting for the home team, fair enough. I've never been able to be like that, even though I lived in Boston for years, I couldn't root for the Patriots.”
“That's not a problem.”
Remembering what happened, and I know she deserves an apology.
“And speaking of a problem, I want to apologize to her for what happened.”
She stops walking and turns to me, I hope I didn't do something wrong by bringing this subject up.
“Gael, I appreciate your gesture, but there's no reason to apologize to me, it wasn't you who caused any of that, I listened well when Bryan mentioned the names of only Allan and Charles.”
I didn't realize he mentioned names, and I'm glad she noticed and didn't think anything wrong of me.
“No hard feelings then?” I ask to make sure.
“From you, yes.” He says walking back. “Now with Bryan it will be a different story.”
She has a smile on her face, which I know well, of who will do something. And I will love to see what she will do with him, not only see, but also help.
“If you want an accomplice, you can count on me.” I give her a wink.
“It sounds like we're committing a crime, but I like it and I accept the offer.” His smile gets even bigger.
We walked a few more steps in silence, until she spoke.
“Now changing the subject, earlier you mentioned scouting, were you part of the movement?”
Apparently, she pays attention to every word she hears, is it something natural to her or that she learned at university so she could become a good lawyer.
“Yes, I did, Be Prepared.” I say the Scout salute.
“Be Prepared.” She returns the gesture. “What do you miss most about your time?”
My time as a scout, it seems like it was another life, I would sometimes wait all week for meetings, so I could forget a little pressure to get into Stanford or Harvard. I remember how David and I would constantly make plans to go camping, just to get away from the pressure.
“I miss camping, putting a backpack on my back and getting away from the world for a few days. What do you miss?”
“The campfire meetings, every month my troop had one. But I also miss the cantonments, my dad gave the troop a bus so the senior troop would go to our farm in Sunray, go hiking or swimming in the pool.”
I remember only doing cantonment while I was a Scout, as it was easier for the leaders to look after all the children in a lodge than in tents in the middle of nowhere, but the seniors in my troop didn't care for this extra comfort.
“I remember how people always joked that I was a descendant of Baden-Powell because I have the surname Powell, which is just a coincidence as I have no connection with the English.”
In fact, it is quite a coincidence that she has the same surname as the founder of the Scout movement, Robert Baden-Powell was a great leader and soldier, who achieved the honor of attaining the title of English lord. I imagine that must have earned her a lot of jokes, but she doesn't seem to get annoyed by that kind of joke, but rather makes fun of it.
You said you liked camping, but I imagine at your age you didn't take part in the Centenary Jamboree, am I right?”
I remember the Centennial Jamboree well, which was held in 2007 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Scouting, even though I was no longer in a group I made a point of going to this very important event, and for that I signed up for the international service team. I look at her and see that she is smiling, the brunette is teasing me by implying that I am old.
“Who do you take me for young?” I ask, making her laugh harder. “Know that I'm not that old.”
“But you're not so young as to have participated in the Jamboree.”
“That depends on your point of view, if you mean going as a senior, I was indeed over age, but I was there as part of the service team.”
“That's cool, but I imagine you didn't stay with the American contingent, I think I would remember seeing you there.”
I don't know if she would recognize me after almost 10 years, and even if we did see each other on that occasion, I didn't stare at any of the girls, I didn't want an international accusation of underage harassment on my life.
“I stayed assisting the medical team.”
“Explained then, I went nowhere near the medical area.” Either she is very careful or else she runs away from doctors. “We arrived.” She speaks taking me by surprise.
We enter the store and Rayka goes straight to a counter where there are several types of hair accessories, I don't understand why she came here to buy this. Maybe she just invented to come to the store to get away from the table a bit after what happened. I see her picking up some elastic bands to hold her hair, as well as some clips and finally some sticks with stars hanging from one end.
“This one is for you.” She offers me a black elastic with stars. “You will need it.”
My hair isn't very long, it's a bit past my chin, but I still don't understand why she's giving me this elastic.
“Thank you.” I say as I take it. “But why do you think I will need it?”
“Have you ever been to Six Flags Park?”
Okay, now I'm even more confused.
“Yes, whenever I'm in Atlanta I like to go with my sisters.”
If there's one program, we've always done together it's going to the park, I remember how mad Gladys was when she was smaller and couldn't go with me, Gwen, and Gayla, I will never forget her joy the first time she went.
“We happen to be in Texas and not Georgia, Six Flags there does not have the Titan, and believe me when I tell you that you will not like riding that roller coaster with your hair down.”
I have heard many stories about this roller coaster, which is considered the biggest in all of Texas, but it never crossed my mind that I would need to tie my hair up for it. I look at her hair and try to imagine her having trouble taking care of it, but I fail miserably.
“What are you looking at?” Rayka asks and only then do I realize I've spent too much time watching her hair.
“I'm just trying to figure out how you know about this subject.”
“My high school class wanted to come here for the day, some girls had their hair down and when we got back to the hotel, they started asking for help because they couldn't untangle their hair. But then again, only a crazy person would ride a toy that goes over eighty miles per hour and think that it won't tangle their hair.”
It's clear from the way she spoke that she must have laughed a lot at her colleagues.
“And you were certainly smarter than them.”
“Of course, I was, I laughed a lot that day at their drama that they were going to go bald at graduation.” She laughs and I join her.
It is so easy to interact with Rayka, I am enjoying her company.
GaelWe enter the eating area and go straight to where our group is sitting.“Rayka, you took your time, where were you?” Ness asks.“Relax mom, I just went to buy some hair clips. Or did you forget last time?”Rayka puts the bag with the items on the table.“I had forgotten, I'm glad you remembered. Rayka, help me make a bun without messing up my braid.” Ness asks.Rayka goes over to her friend and starts messing with her hair.“Sarah, help me with mine.” Liz asks.I guess we won't be leaving soon, so the best thing I can do is sit and wait.“Hey Rayka, I remembered something about last night.”“What, Liz?”“Who's afraid of the big bad wolf, big bad wolf.” Liz speaks humming and looking at me.I don't understand why she is looking at me, is she angry because I didn't let her partner up with Rayka?“Quiet Liz.” Rayka says making her friends laugh.I don't know if it's an impression, but it seems that Rayka's face turned red when Liz sang. And from everyone's reaction, I don't think th
GaelWe arrive at the park and while Ness and Charles are waiting for the second car at the park entrance, I go with Rayka to the counter to buy the passports.“Good afternoon, I am a Diamond member, I need a bracelet, and I will also want seven passports with Flash Pass Platinum.” Rayka asks, handing the attendant a card.Very smart of her to buy the flash passports, they offer the advantage of not having to stand in lines waiting to ride the rides, which will give us more time to enjoy the park. And although it costs a lot more than a regular passport, the benefit is worth it.“Here you are Miss Powell.” The girl says handing over the wristbands.“Thank you.” Rayka says and walks away.I notice that the attendant did not even mention the prices, now I do not know how much I will need to give Rayka for my passport.“Rayka, how much do I need to give you?”“Don't worry about that, the passports are on me.”What? She can't be serious about banking all our passports.“Rayka, that's not
GaelIt takes a while, but finally we buy the soft drinks and go back to the group.“I can't believe it, how Kaleo has the guts to go up to her.”I don't know who the boy is, but Bryan doesn't seem to have a good relationship with him. I look where our group is and two boys are coming towards them, both are redheads, however, one is taller and with a stronger physique.“Who are those guys?”“The shorter one is Rayka's ex-boyfriend, the relationship ended after she discovered his betrayal, Andrew said he would end his race if he got close to his daughter again, and I will be happy to do him that please.” Bryan speaks up, tightening his stride.I will never understand why people stay in a relationship and cheat, if you don't like it anymore, the best thing to do is to break up and each one move on with their lives. And how can anyone in their right mind betray a person like Rayka, who even though I only met today, I could already see that she is a strong, intelligent, and charismatic wo
GaelFor a moment, we both just stared at the view.“And you don't have anyone waiting for you in Miami?”Her question surprises me, and since she was open in telling me her story, I decide to do the same.“I don't, it's hard to find a partner who understands the medical routine, who accepts that my cell phone can ring at any time, and I have to run out to answer an emergency, even during a romantic date.”That's how it was with Lays, we dated for five months, in the beginning everything was great, she did wonders when we were between four walls, but just good sex is not enough to keep a relationship. She complained directly because I canceled our dates, she did not accept that I left her alone to see my patients, she demanded a lot of attention, in addition to jealousy and accusing me of having an affair with my boss Loriany, which was never true, since Loriany was married when we met and I never disrespected her marriage, between us there was always only friendship.I remember the s
GaelJust before entering the food court, I see Katley walking with her boyfriend Jeon and little Kaleb, her son with Allan, he is cute dressed like a cowboy, with a navy-blue shirt, jeans, boots, a belt with a buckle that is a smaller replica of one that Allan has and a cowboy hat. When he sees me, he starts running to me and I let go of Rayka so I can pick him up, despite the distance every year Allan takes him to Atlanta to see our family and so I could follow his growth a little.“Hi Uncle Gael.” Kaleb says.“Hi champ.”Katley and Jeon approach and I quickly make the introductions.“Uncle, I came to see Dad in the toro bravo. Dad said he's going to make a lot of money today and we're going to Disney.” Kaleb says excitedly.Allan shouldn't say things like that to the boy, my cousin is too confident of this victory, and I am afraid that if he loses, in addition to the heartbreak of defeat, he will have to deal with the disappointment of his son, in addition to the charges for the pr
GaelFires pop around the entire field indicating that the event is about to begin, I see the owner of the bull entering the arena and going to the stage.“With you, Richard Rivera, from the rodeo company Revenge.” A voice speaks over the stadium's sound system.“Very appropriate.” Rayka grumbles.“Good evening everyone and welcome to this magnificent event.” Richard begins to speak. “In our life, 8 seconds may mean nothing, but for a cowboy, 8 seconds on the back of a bull is like an eternity, it takes only 8 seconds for a cowboy to be considered a hero, in 8 seconds one will be defined the best. To face those 8 seconds takes an insane courage, a fearless bravery that few men have in this world. With you Sovereign.”The bull is released into the arena, although I saw him yesterday and do not understand much of this business, I still marvel at the beauty of the animal, all black and only the white horns that stand out in his figure. I feel Rayka raise her body and turn to look at her,
GaelWatching Rayka walk away, I stare at her without understanding what she intends to do.“Go on Pitbull, show them who's boss.” Bryan shouts. He's known her for many years, and despite the teasing, he understands her better.“What do you think she's going to do?” I ask.“Isn't it obvious? She's going to do what her cousin couldn't.' Bryan says.” Bryan says.I don't understand how she can do that, because the only way is to ride the bull.“This is crazy, she will break her promise.” Liz says.“If you look closely, she won't, because she promised not to ride on the farm anymore, she didn't say anything about a challenge outside.” Ness speaks up.I can only have misunderstood, Rayka can't be thinking about riding that bull. I look for her and see that she is almost next to the stage, but the entrance is on the other side.“Do you think Rayka is going to ride this bull?” I ask.“She sure is.” Ness says.“She can't do that; we have to stop her.” I say, getting up.I feel someone grab my
GaelI watch Rayka bend down and caress the bull's neck and seems to be saying something, I just don't know if it's with the bull or with the pawn who is helping her.Rayka raises her head and I see that her face is serious, she must be focused on what she will do soon, she adjusts her hat, pulling the tie to keep it on her head during the ride. The pedestrian hands her a glove which she puts on her left hand and helps tie, then offers a rope which she uses to rub the palm of the glove. Rayka then jumps over the bar and climbs on the bull to start fixing the rope.“This girl is not only crazy, but stupid.” Allan exclaims. My cousin took the night off today to be an asshole, that's the only explanation.“Don't call her that.” I say between breaths.“And what should I call her? In addition to wanting to be a cowgirl, you will ride without the protective vest.” Allan says.I look at the screen and in fact Rayka is just wearing the clothes she was already wearing; she is not wearing a ves
