Lucy.

I woke up to the soft murmur of voices outside my door and the scent of fresh pine and baked bread wafting in from the kitchen. For a moment, I lay still, willing myself to drift back into the dream I couldn’t quite remember but had left a strange ache in my chest.

Then came the knock.

“Lucy,” a gentle voice called—Eliza, one of the housemaids. “The Alpha asked me to inform you… there’s a small gathering tonight. For his brother’s visit.”

I blinked against the soft sunlight pouring through the window. “A party?” I asked, my voice hoarse from sleep.

“Yes, Miss. Just something simple. But he’d like everyone to attend.”

Of course he would. “Okay,” I murmured, dragging myself out of bed. “Thanks.”

She left, and I was alone again. Alone with a twisting feeling in my gut.

By the time the party began, the estate had transformed. Soft lanterns swayed above the courtyard, casting golden light on the polished stone floor. Music floated on the warm evening breeze, and people were already s

Lucy. The next week was hell. There’s no delicate way to put it. I woke up every morning to the sound of whispers, the sting of laughter that wasn’t even trying to hide anymore. Eyes followed me down every hallway of the palace, and not the kind filled with curiosity or admiration—these were sharp, dissecting stares, the kind people use when they’ve already decided who you are and are just waiting for you to live up to the worst version of it.The rumors had exploded like wildfire, and I had no idea who lit the match."Lucy is infertile.""She used Derek to try and stay relevant now that Alpha Ellison’s losing interest.""Bet she doesn’t even have a wolf—how did she get this far anyway?"I tried to hold my head high, to walk past the servants and nobles and guests with my chin up, my steps confident. But every whisper felt like a blade. And then came the worst part.Pictures.Someone had taken them—of Derek entering my room late at night. Once. Just once, the night we had that argumen

Lucy. The door shut behind Aurora with a gentle click, but it might as well have slammed with thunder. My eyes didn’t leave the space she’d occupied, even as her perfume lingered in the air—sweet, cloying, and utterly fake.Something about her didn’t sit right.I waited until her footsteps vanished down the hallway before moving. My breath came slow and controlled, but my heart was racing. She had just come into my room acting like she was looking for something. As if she hadn’t just spent the past few weeks treating me like a cockroach she couldn’t wait to squash.No. I wasn’t buying it.I turned to my bags upside down as I search everything. Even the bag that still lay on the chair beside the window. My hands hesitated in the air before I reached for it. I rifled through my items quickly—clothes folded with mechanical precision, a small mirror with a crack through the middle, makeup, perfume, a necklace I recognized from a ball weeks ago. Nothing stood out. Nothing screamed this wo

Lucy.I could barely feel my legs. The rain hadn’t stopped when I lifted Ellison off the ground, his limp body heavy against mine. I didn’t care that I was drenched, my clothes plastered to my skin, mud up to my knees. I didn’t care about the ache in my spine or the burning in my arms. I just ran. Holding him tighter with every step, whispering through clenched teeth, Don’t die. Don’t die. Please, Ellison, don’t die on me.By the time I reached the healer’s quarters, I was breathless and soaked, screaming for help like a madwoman.“Help! He’s not breathing right—somebody help me!”Guards and medics swarmed us. Hands pulled him from my grip, and they rushed him inside while someone tried to drag me into a side room.“I’m fine!” I snapped, shoving them away. “Help him! Just help him!”They wheeled him past thick wooden doors. The next time I saw him, he was surrounded by healers, spell-casters, and surgeons. They moved like shadows under torchlight—cutting, stitching, whispering incanta

Lucy.I woke up screaming.Sweat slicked my brow, and my heart pounded like war drums in my chest. My lungs fought for air as if I'd been drowning—except it wasn’t water that suffocated me. It was fear. The kind that crept into your dreams and left claw marks on your soul. The scream had barely left my throat when I felt something… move on my bed.I looked down, and there it was—beady-eyed, whiskered, and nibbling away at what looked like yesterday’s bread crust.A damn mouse.I shrieked and kicked my legs violently, sending the little beast flying across the room. It hit the floor with a squeak and scurried into a crack in the wall.Disgust twisted my face as I clutched the tattered blanket to my chest.Gods, this place. The ceiling above me creaked and groaned like it might cave in any minute. A fresh leak dripped just inches from my face, soaking a corner of the mattress. The stench of mold was stronger today. The walls were stained, and there was something—someone—scratching behin

Alpha Ellison.I was so damn disgusted by the sight in front of me. Oh! I was angry.Rage churned in my chest like a storm I couldn’t calm. It made no damn sense, none at all, but I was angry. Furious. So much so that my hands curled into fists at my sides and my jaw ached from how tightly I was clenching it.I didn’t like Ivy.Not really. Not in the way a man should like a woman. She was my mistress, yes, but even that had been born of convenience, of need—not affection. And to be honest I've looked for every way to discard her but then she keeps coming back. And yet, seeing her there, looking disheveled and frightened, with Mucus standing too close, lips bloodied, eyes filled with something pathetic and desperate—it made me burn.Mucus.That repulsive, stubby man whose presence barely warranted attention any other day. The kitchen assistant with a permanent stench of grease and sweat. That man had dared to touch Ivy. Had kissed her. No, what was I thinking? She kissed him! She's pro

Ivy’.Three days.It had been three full days since Mucus, yes, that unfortunate, round-bellied, perpetually sweaty kitchen assistant ate the meal I had made for the king. Three days since that man had stopped acting like the mildly tolerable, barely visible kitchen staff and had transformed into… whatever this obsession was.And now, each morning, as the sun peeked over the palace walls, I opened my door to find gifts. Roses, chocolates, even a poorly drawn portrait of me with the word “Angel” scribbled underneath in crooked letters. But the worst part? The notes. My beloved Ivy,The way your hands sliced those carrots stole my heart. The way you stirred that soup… divine.Let me serve you the way you served the stew—warm, hot, and forever.Yours in eternal hunger,Mucus.By the third day, I couldn’t take it anymore.I’d planned to keep ignoring him, hoping it was just a weird phase—maybe a prank from the other kitchen staff. But the desperation in his eyes every time I entered the k
