LOGIN(KAIRA’S POV)
Slade slipped into his seat, too smoothly, while I turned my gaze away, like we had not already locked eyes. Oh why! Why did he have to be seated beside me. Because he is your stepbrother, that's why. "Makaira." I snapped my head towards his direction at the sudden mention of my full name. Slade inclined his head at the table and my cheeks heated up at my name card. Of course. I took the paper off the table and folded it. "What does it mean?" His voice sliced my thoughts. I turned to him and met his steely gaze. "None of your business." I answered and turned around. My heart was pounding, racing, and one would think I said something worse than that. But I was glad I said it. I don't know where the anger came from, last night? Honestly there are one million reasons to be angry at him. And I expressed it? That's a good step for me. "One who brings happiness and joy." Slade announced in a voice only audible enough for me. "A name symbolizing delight, gladness—" "Why are you speaking to me?" I found myself asking, unable to bear the calmness in his voice while he set my own soul on fire. He smirked lightly and then adjusted in his seat so that his legs were crossed while he sat back relaxed… Like I was entertaining him. "What are you mad about?" He asked, his fingers rubbing his chin and his eyes digging into mine. "Are you mad that you didn't get a kiss last night?" I couldn't stop the loud gasp that escaped from me or the heat that flooded to my cheeks. "No!" I gushed in a fluster. "Because if so, I can easily give you a kiss. Right now, right here." His eyes lazily dropped to my lips as he leaned closer to me. The lake house. His lips on mine. The way my body melted into him. I couldn’t think about that now. I wouldn’t. Push him away! What is he doing leaning into you in front of so— A sudden swell of applause erupted around us. Slade straightened immediately. Only then did I realize everyone was standing.as well. Then it occurred to me. The couple's entrance. I jumped to my feet, clapping my hands too. I noticed Slade's lips, the very corners were curved into an unmistakable smirk. I ignored him and clapped my hands, inwardly scolding myself and telling myself not to indulge him next time. And I was sure to keep my eyes away from him. Now that didn't turn out to be so hard when the food started coming. Now what else to pleasantly distract me if not, my unmatched love for good food. The appetizers almost had me drooling: Lobster Crostini, stuffed mushrooms, caprese skewers. I was almost full when it was time for the couple's first dance. Dinner was being served then, and even though there was a variety of delicious dishes, I chose only to have a spring salad and a seared salmon. It was amazing. "Un-fucking-believable." Slade cursed under his breath. I turned to him, wiping my mouth clean with a handkerchief. I had just taken the last fork of salmon and was already reminiscing. "What?" I asked boredly when he wouldn't stop looking at me. "You're too tiny to eat all that food." He said, eyeing me in wonder as he shook his head. "If I hadn't seen it, then I wouldn't have believed it." I shifted in my seat, feeling a little self-aware. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and a boy with spiky blonde hair and sharp green eyes that reminded me of Slade's. "Hey gorgeous. I'm Van." He introduced with his hand reaching out for mine. "I'm Kaira." I let my hands brush his palm nervously and stole a glance at Slade. He looked very displeased. "I know. You're the daughter of the beautiful bride. The chief bridesmaid. We all saw you walk down the aisle." Van spoke confidently, a big smile on his face. “I don’t think anyone looked away.” My eyes widened, surprised at the boldness of the compliments he gave me. "Th-thank you." I said, feeling the rush of heat under my skin. "Can you move away now, you're making it hard for me to stretch my legs?" Slade interrupted. He was speaking to Van. My stomach squeezed. I turned to him and he had the most bored expression I had ever seen. Almost like listening to Van and I talk made him sick. "Honestly didn't see you there, cousin." Van said, moving away politely. Did he just say cousin? And what was that weird tone he used. "Kaira, will you give me the pleasure of having this dance with you?" Van extended his hand politely with a bow. I looked around, my cheeks growing hot. I didn't miss Slade's glare. Why did he look so angry? Was he angry because we were having a conversation in front of him? Or just irritated that I could attract good compliments? "Um… thank you but I am not such a good dancer." I said nervously. "Now you've heard her. She doesn't want to dance with a dipshit. So get out." Slade sharply joined before my sentence was even complete. I looked up at him, eyes wide with horror. "Slade." I warned in a low tone, worried about attracting people's eyes and ears. "You just can't stand not being the center of attention, can you?" Van turned to Slade with a sigh. "What attention would I want from you?" The words were as blunt as they were cold and Slade stared him dead in the eye as he said them. "You just don't like that I asked her for a dance." Van continued, a smirk playing on his lips. "Guys, please." I tried to simmer things but neither was looking my way. "I don't care who you ask for a dance." Slade scoffed. "And I knew she wasn't going to give you the chance." That struck a nerve. Or maybe it was the mocking look that he was wearing on his face. Like he had figured me all out already. "That was my decision." I said. Slade didn't even glance my way. "You weren't going to dance with him." "And says who?" I laughed drily. "Says me." He turned to me fiercely. I glanced around, my cheeks burning. But no one was watching. They were all focused on the dance floor. And that pissed me off. Perhaps I have never seen his eyes flashing so much, that's why I withdrew slightly, in shock. He looked very serious, almost like he was daring me. I raised my chin. "Actually, I think I've changed my mind." I announced. I noticed Slade's eyebrow dart up but I ignored and continued. "I'm not such a good dancer but I'm not terrible." I slipped my hand into Van’s. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Slade’s jaw tighten. Then I let Van lead me toward the dance floor.(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--
(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc
(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc
(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much
(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr
(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. Simply leading the way.I followed him closely like a pupil behind a headmaster, past the house doors, to the hedged pathways, to the garden gates, past chrysanthemums, a variety of roses, orchids, daisies… and then carefully past the stepping ston
(KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. I pressed my sweaty palms against the expensive leather while my body stiffened in the backseat. I wanted to close my eyes but somehow I couldn't. I sat, like a programmed robot, and watched
(KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder. I stood like a doll, unmoving, waiting as the footsteps presented their owners."Oh my goodness, what happened, baby?" Mum cried as she ran towards me. "We were just on our way to get you both and then we heard you
