Chapter 3

Author: Morning Fish
With that said, I got up and strode out of the private room.

Carl chased after me, managing to stop me in the corridor.

"Rebecca, stop joking around. Breaking up isn't something you should just bring up on a whim."

Joanna, who had followed behind Carl, said in a guilty tone, "I'm sorry, Becca. We truly did neglect your feelings this time. If you really don't want to eat spicy food, let's just forget it."

"You don't have to apologize to her. She's the one acting spoiled right now. Just because she's deaf, she expects the whole world to cater to her."

Carl shot me a cold look. Then, as though he had lost all patience with me, he reached out to yank my hearing aid from my ear.

There was a humming sound before a sharp pain shot through my ear.

The accident that followed only happened because I couldn't hear a thing, and so I didn't know that a little kid had run into a waiter. The boiling hot pot of stew the waiter was carrying crashed to the floor, splattering a few droplets onto my arm.

Immediately, blisters formed on my skin, and the pain made my entire body tremble.

However, what I did see was my boyfriend protecting another woman in his arms, not even sparing me a glance. It was exactly like how he hadn't realized I was trapped in the fire in my previous life, even up until my very last breath.

I picked up my hearing aid from the floor. Earlier, in his haste to protect Joanna, Carl had tossed it aside without a care.

Something flashed in Carl's eyes when he noticed the injuries on me.

"If it weren't for you throwing a tantrum and wanting to break up with me, we wouldn't be standing here in the corridor. You know you can't hear a thing, so it's your own fault for not being more careful too."

I stood frozen to the spot, utterly dumbfounded at his words. It wasn't until the ache in my eyes spread to my heart that I finally regained my composure.

If he hadn't taken my hearing aid away, I would've definitely been able to dodge aside in time. Besides that, it wasn't that I wasn't careful enough, but that he simply cared more about Joanna than me.

After that incident, I sought out my counselor and canceled my application to switch departments.

He said meaningfully, "Thank goodness you came to your senses. If you had transferred over, your future would've definitely been affected."

He was right—I knew absolutely nothing about music.

In my previous life, I managed to transfer over to the Music Department, but it took significant effort from me before I was finally able to graduate, if only just.

Joanna and Carl went on to become a famous songwriter and singer, respectively, while I ended up working at their studio, running errands for them.

Upon returning to my dorm room, I received a call from Mom.

"Becca, I've made you an appointment with an ENT specialist. Maybe there's a chance you'll be able to regain your hearing."

I hadn't gone to see the specialist in my past life, as Joanna and Carl had told me that the likelihood of me regaining my hearing was very low after being unable to hear for so many years. They had claimed that they didn't want me to get my hopes up, only to be disappointed once more.

At the time, Carl had even patted my head, saying, "It doesn't matter that you can't hear a thing. After all, you still have me."

Like a fool, I had believed them and allowed myself to become the target of their pranks, where they would take my hearing aid away from me. Year after year, this went on, until I ultimately lost my life at their hands.

"Becca, I won't force you if you genuinely don't want to go…"

I snapped out of my thoughts. "Alright, I'll go."

…

After a series of tests at the hospital, the doctor said, "There's still hope for your ears, though it's hard to say how much of your hearing you will regain. However, you absolutely mustn't injure them any further during treatment. Otherwise, the consequences would be irreversible."

I breathed a sigh of relief. As long as I could regain my hearing, I refused to give up on even the smallest chance.

With the doctor's note in hand, I applied for a leave of absence for the next semester.

On my way back to my room, I ran into Carl and Joanna.

Carl's expression changed when he spotted the test results I held. "Becca, are your ears feeling unwell?"

I replied placidly, "No, I just went for a check-up."

Carl looked as though he was going to press further, but Joanna frowned and spoke up first. "Becca, don't tell me you're thinking of getting treatment for your ears? Stop wasting your time. There's no way you can get them cured."

Hearing that, Carl instantly agreed, "That's right, Becca. Aren't you just making things difficult for yourself? It's not like I'm scornful of you being deaf."

Instead of responding to him, I turned my attention to Joanna and asked her, "You like Carl, don't you? That's why you're so insistent on me not getting any treatment for my ears."

Joanna's eyes widened before she said guiltily, "Carl and I are just good friends. If I wanted to get together with him, why would he be your boyfriend?"

Carl pinned me with a disappointed look. "Rebecca Jink, are you mentally twisted because of your physical disability? How could you slander Joanna and me like that? Apologize to her, now."

His last sentence was practically an order.

Ignoring them, I turned on my heel and entered the dorm building.

As I arrived at the second floor, I glanced out the window, just in time to see Joanna throwing herself into Carl's arms while tears streamed down her face.

Carl's eyes were gentle as he wiped her tears away and comforted her. "Don't mind Rebecca, Joanna. She's just being petty."

"All these years, I cared for you so much that I was willing to bend over backward for you. Yet, every time you turned my pain into a joke, you reopened old wounds. After that, there was no future left for us."My voice was calm, like the way a judge would announce their final verdict. In my previous life, I had loved him more than I loved myself, which led me to let him play the same prank on me over and over again. Eventually, one such prank had resulted in my death.Carl couldn't stop his shoulders from trembling as profound regret and misery crashed over him. There was a light in his red-rimmed eyes that I knew meant he was unwilling to accept the situation."Why can't you give me another chance? Becca, we've been together since we were kids. It hasn't been easy getting to where we are today."Indeed, it hadn't been easy.He was completely unaware, but in my previous life, I had loved him in silence. Half a year later, after enduring treatment session after treatment session, I was finally ready to undergo the surgery. The operation was a resounding success, and at long last, I was able to hear the world with my own ears. I no longer had to hear it through the tinny, mechanical sounds of a hearing aid. Now, the sounds reached me clearly, full of vibrant life.Upon returning home from the hospital, Dad insisted on dragging me off to go on a shopping spree to celebrate.Once we were done shopping, he headed to the underground parking to get the car while I waited for him at an outdoor cafe around the corner, a cup of hot latte cradled in my hands. It was early fall now. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves around me, creating a soft, clear susurration unlike the dull sounds I was used to before."Rebecca Jink?"A hesitant voice spoke up from beside me.When I turned my head, I saw that it was Carl's ex-roommate.Taking a seat opposite me, he stirred his coffee as he began to

After ending the phone call with Joanna, Carl checked his Instagram messages with Rebecca.Their last message was him berating her for being unreasonable. At the time, he hadn't noticed, but now that he was reading through their chat again, he discovered she hadn't sent him a message since the day he took her hearing aid away after learning she was transferring departments. In the past, she had always been all too eager to share everything with him. Even the shape of a cloud above her head was enough for her to contact him.Borrowing his roommate's phone, he went to Rebecca's Instagram account. The brilliant splotches of color blooming across the screen stabbed deep into his eyes.Previously, all of her posts had revolved around him, like them sharing a meal or her accompanying him to his vocal practices. Her love for him had shone through every single one of her posts. Now, however, she was clad in a paint-stained apron, paintbrush in hand as she shot a dazzling smile at the cam

The smile on Aubrey's face vanished as she eyed Joanna intently."Becca was right to break up with you. Having a boyfriend with no sense of boundaries is just asking for trouble. "And you! You claim to be Becca's friend, yet you're always hanging around her boyfriend. How utterly shameless! Stay away from my daughter, you wretches."With that, she mercilessly shut the door in their faces.Carl stumbled back a step, while Joanna burst into loud sobs as though she had suffered a great humiliation."How could Mrs. Jink misunderstand me like that? You and I just share the same interests! They don't know anything! If I had wanted to be with you, we would've gotten together long before this! Rebecca wouldn't even be in the picture!"Carl was silent. In the past, plenty of people had teased him about his relationship with Joanna, but he had merely treated those comments like a joke. He hadn't bothered explaining, nor had he cleared things up.Thinking back on it now, he had actually s

Carl was absolutely floored. How was it that he hadn't known anything about Rebecca wanting to take a leave of absence from school?Hastily pulling out his phone, he called her, yet not a single call went through. Belatedly, he realized that he had been blocked. He stood in the corridor of the administrative building with the hot sun blazing down on him, yet all he felt was an overwhelming coldness spreading through his body. Was Rebecca upset at him? Did she blame him for forcing her to go diving and causing her to injure her ears? Or could it be that she blamed him for always taking her hearing aid away from her?At that moment, Joanna skipped over and patted Carl on the shoulder."What are you doing, staring off into space right here?"Carl turned to her and replied in a dazed tone, "Becca blocked my number. Are you able to get in contact with her?" Joanna's eyes flashed briefly at the words. She'd realized the same during the summer holidays, when she stopped being able to

Several days later, it was the summer holidays. My family and Carl's had agreed to spend some time together at the beach. However, when we arrived at the airport, I saw Joanna waiting for us with her luggage. Once we got to the beach, Joanna insisted we go diving.I immediately refused, "I don't want to go diving since it'll be uncomfortable for my ears."In response, Joanna clung to my arm and whined, "Come onnnn, Becca. We're already here, so it would be a waste not to go."Then she leaned closer and whispered in my ear, "Carl told me that he wants to apologize to you and has a surprise waiting for you down there."Carl came over then and took my hand. "Becca, just think of it as spending time with me, okay?"With that, the two didn't give me the chance to refuse a second time, grabbing one arm each and dragging me over to the diving site. The icy seawater shocked my nerves. At first, Carl and the diving instructor kept close to me, one on each side as they led me down.O
