Chapter 2

Author: Pigmy Bean
One sentence was all it took to send the already noisy private room into an even bigger frenzy, and suddenly, dozens of eyes turned toward me. I said nothing and just glanced at Jim, who was standing a few steps away.

He did not look at me. Instead, he glanced at Harriet beside him, almost as if he were silently asking her permission. Something tightened painfully in my chest. My lashes trembled as I awkwardly looked away.

How could I have forgotten? The one who married Jim was Harriet, not me.

With everyone staring at me expectantly, I quickly brought the excitement to a screeching halt.

"Why are you all looking at me? I'm not the one who got married. You should be looking at Harriet."

The room fell silent. Everyone knew what kind of relationship Harriet and Jim had.

Jim's expression darkened. "Cecilia, why would you say something like that? I already told you, Harriet and I were just playing around. She's only my little sister. Are you seriously jealous of her too?"

His eyes were filled with irritation, as if I were the one making a scene for no reason.

However, after all these years, was I really the unreasonable one?

He said Harriet was only his little sister, so apparently, it was perfectly normal for him to wash the underwear of a 22-year-old woman with his own hands. It was perfectly normal for him to hold her hand whenever they went out, even when people mistook them for a couple, and he never once bothered to explain.

It was perfectly normal for him to give her his first wedding ring, her first wedding dress, and even his first marriage.

What would count as not normal, then? Was I not allowed to be petty? Was I not allowed to feel hurt and wronged? Now, apparently, I was not even allowed to tell the truth.

What a joke.

Feeling the heat gathering in my eyes, I quickly turned my head and blinked.

I was about to speak when Harriet cut me off, "Jim, did I do something wrong? Did I make Cecilia upset?" Her eyes widened, already red from crying. "I did not mean to. I just wanted to give you all my firsts. If Cecilia does not want me to, then we can go right now and…"

Before she could finish, Jim spoke with obvious concern. "No. You did nothing wrong. I promised you three days, and three days it is."

Then he sighed and looked at me. "Cecilia, you agreed to let Harriet experience this. Now, you're making sarcastic comments and making her feel bad. Just apologize to her, and we can put this behind us, okay?"

The way Jim said it made it sound as if allowing me to apologize was some enormous favor he was generously granting me.

I could not help laughing.

This was not the first time he had asked me to apologize to Harriet.

In the past, I would always get angry and argue with him for a long time, making sure he understood that Harriet was not the only one who could feel hurt.

Every time, we went around in circles, and he would eventually pull me into his arms, apologize, and promise that he would never take Harriet's side again. Then the next time, he would do exactly the same thing.

After eight years of arguing, I did not want to do it anymore.

I pressed my lips together, took a deep breath, and slowly stood up. Then, in a calm, steady voice, I said, "Fine. I was wrong."

I was wrong for not realizing sooner how much he favored Harriet. I was wrong for believing, again and again, that he would change.

Fortunately, I still had a chance to right things.

Yet Jim froze for several seconds when he heard those words. This was exactly what he had wanted, so why did he suddenly feel so uneasy?

While he stood there in a daze, I grabbed my bag and headed for the door. He immediately snapped back to reality and started after me, but Harriet caught his arm.

"Jim, everyone is still waiting to see us…"

I did not hear the rest. Something made me turn around, and that was when I saw Harriet rising onto her toes. Jim did not push her away. My hand froze halfway into my bag as a loud buzz suddenly filled my head, drowning out everything around me.

When I finally came back to my senses, it felt as if something had punched straight through my chest. Even breathing hurt.

Jim suddenly stepped backward. The confusion in his eyes vanished the moment he saw me. He hurried toward me. "Cecilia…"

I quietly stepped away from his outstretched hand. Just hearing his voice made me sick. When I put down the bank card he had given me, I did it with enough force to stop whatever else he was about to say.

"Take it."

It was the wedding fund Jim had given me. Now, I was returning every cent of it.

With that, I fled the venue. The moment I stepped outside, the tears I had been holding back finally spilled over.

Behind me came the sound of hurried footsteps. "Cecilia!"

My eyes burned with tears. Without hesitating for even a second, I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching out to me, and pulled myself to my feet. Then I ran.The wolves that had moved away were drawn back by the sound of our footsteps. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.I felt the hand gripping mine tighten, and his pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just run with me."I nodded.Even though I was already exhausted and could barely run anymore, I forced my heavy legs to keep moving. I did not dare slow down, let alone stop.Just as I struggled to keep going, my foot caught on a rock, and I stumbled and fell. Before I could get back up, a wolf lunged straight at me. Wilson quickly dragged me forward, but another wolf attacked him from the side. He had no time to worry about me and could only keep shouting for me to climb the tree. However, more and more pairs of glowing green eyes surrounded me. I could not find a single chance to climb.I carefully ba

Jim felt like a cold wind had blown straight through his chest after those merciless words. He pressed his lips together, tears clinging to his lashes."Cecilia, I'm sorry. I was wrong before. I never understood where the line was between a brother and his sister, but I understand now. Can you forgive me one more time? I already had the house renovated. Look, I even got the breed of cat you used to love."He hurriedly pulled out his phone and held it in front of me, swiping through photo after photo.I did not even look up. I simply slapped his hand away."I don't want to see it. I'm not interested, and I don't like cats anymore."His phone hit the ground. For a moment, Jim looked so heartbroken that he could barely breathe. Still, he forced a smile, crouched down, and picked it up."Okay. Then when you go back, we can—"I cut him off impatiently, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. Even if I were, I would never get back together with you. So, stop foll

Cecilia's POV:"Ms. Carter, take a break. I don't think we're going to see the pride today. Once you have rested, we should head back to camp."I waved him off. My eyes never left the monitors.I had been in Frisia for more than a year, and filming the documentary had been far harder than anyone expected. We barely had enough usable footage to show for it, and one of our crew members had even come close to being mauled.A lot of people had quit because of it. They packed their things and went straight home. Fewer than twenty people remained now, which was pitifully small for a professional production team.Still, we had not given up. We were holding on and doing everything we could to finish what we had started. Then a cup of warm water appeared beside me. The familiar scent made the tips of my ears turn red."Have some water. I'll keep watch for you."I quietly said okay and let him take my place. I had barely gotten to my feet when someone caught the edge of my shirt."Ms. C

The doctor did not seem concerned."Don't worry. These are just treatment methods. They won't cause any harm. Our hospital always puts the patient's wishes first."Hearing that, Jim finally relaxed.Just like he used to, he reached out and gently rubbed Harriet's head."Be good, Harriet. Cooperate with the treatment. Once you're better, I'll come get you. I'm still paying the rent on your current place. I'm just going to move into our wedding home with Cecilia. You don't mind, right?"In the past, Harriet truly would have objected. However, now, what right did she have to refuse? She nodded repeatedly."Jim, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't bother you and Cecilia. Just don't leave me here, okay? I'm Harriet. Please don't leave me behind."The same words she had said countless times before reached Jim's ears. However, this time, they could no longer touch his heart. He gently pushed her away. "I'm not leaving you."His expression was still as gentle as ever. Yet to Harrie

Harriet rose to her toes and lunged for a kiss, almost like she had lost her mind. Jim stepped back, but she kept moving forward.Jim had never known Harriet could be so strong. In his eyes, she had always been gentle and fragile. Her breath brushed against his neck. Finally, he snapped back to reality and shoved her away."Enough, Harriet! I'm your brother!"Jim practically shouted the words, his voice filled with disbelief and desperation. However, Harriet seemed unable to hear him at all. She wiped away her tears again and again, yet the smile at the corner of her lips never faded."Jim, don't you think you sound ridiculous saying that yourself? We're not even related by blood. What gives you the right to keep calling yourself my brother? Do you really see me as nothing more than your little sister?"And what are you pretending for now? You've liked me for a long time, haven't you? If you never had those feelings for me, then why did you let me get close to you again and again

For a moment, all Jim could hear was a high-pitched ringing in his ears.A terrible thought suddenly surfaced in his mind. He did not have time to say another word to the wedding company. He hung up immediately and called Cecilia.Only one day had passed. Usually, after the phone rang a few times, he would hear the cold automated message telling him that no one was available to answer. This time, however, the phone did not ring at all. Instead, a recorded voice came through immediately."The number you have dialed is no longer in service..."Jim's chest tightened as a wave of unease washed over him. His eyes stared blankly ahead, slowly losing focus. He called Cecilia's best friend next, but every call was rejected. Eventually, even her friend blocked his number. The messages he had sent Cecilia remained untouched in their chat history, with no reply and not even a sign that she had seen them.A terrible sense of panic began to rise inside Jim. For the first time, it felt as th
