Whispers in pine ridge

The farther they drove, the quieter the world became. The wide highways slowly disappeared behind them, replaced by narrow roads that wound through towering pine forests stretching toward distant mountains. Shafts of afternoon sunlight slipped through the thick canopy, scattering patches of gold across the asphalt.

It was breathtaking. Yet the beauty felt... strange.

Almost guarded.

Aria lowered her window slightly. Cool air rushed into the SUV, carrying the earthy scent of pine and damp soil. It should have been peaceful.

Instead, an uneasy feeling settled in her chest. She couldn't explain why. Daniel noticed her watching the endless trees.

"First time seeing Arizona's forests?"

She nodded.

"They're different from what I imagined."

"How so?"

"They're..." She searched for the right word. "Too quiet."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Most visitors say they're peaceful."

"I'm not sure peaceful is the word I'd use."

He chuckled.

"Give it a few days."

"I hope you're right."

She looked back toward the forest. Somehow...

She doubted it.

A weathered wooden sign appeared around the next bend.

WELCOME TO PINE RIDGE

"Where Nature Feels Like Home."

The slogan made her smile For a second. Then it faded.

The town looked exactly like something from an old postcard.

Small cafés stood beside a grocery store and a hardware shop. A white church overlooked the main street, its bell tower rising above the rooftops. Flower baskets decorated storefronts, and people greeted one another by name as they crossed the sidewalks.

Everyone seemed to know everyone.

It was the sort of town she'd once imagined growing old in.

Yet beneath the peaceful atmosphere...

Something felt rehearsed.

Like everyone was trying very hard to pretend everything was normal.

Daniel pulled into the parking lot of a charming two-story building with flower boxes beneath every window.

A carved wooden sign hung above the entrance.

CEDAR CREEK INN

"This is home for the next six months."

Aria smiled.

"It has character."

"It has Martha."

Daniel laughed.

"And trust me, she's the reason people keep coming back."

Inside, the scent of fresh bread and cinnamon wrapped around Aria the moment she entered.

The lobby felt warm and inviting.

Framed photographs covered every wall.

Children building snowmen.

Fishing competitions.

Harvest festivals.

Family picnics.

Every picture captured a happy little town untouched by the outside world.

An elderly woman emerged from the kitchen, dusting flour from her apron.

"You must be Miss Mendoza."

"I am."

The woman smiled warmly before extending her hand.

"I'm Martha."

Her grip was surprisingly firm.

"Welcome to Pine Ridge."

"It's lovely to meet you."

"And you."

While Daniel completed the paperwork, Martha handed Aria an old-fashioned brass key.

"No keycards here."

She winked.

"These never stop working because the battery dies."

Aria laughed.

"I like that."

"Room Twelve."

Martha pointed toward the staircase.

"Breakfast starts at seven. Dinner's at six. If you're late, blame yourself."

"I'll remember."

As Aria turned toward the stairs, one photograph hanging behind the reception desk caught her attention.

A narrow hiking trail disappeared into thick morning mist between towering pine trees.

It looked magical.

"That's beautiful."

She stepped closer.

"Is that trail nearby?"

Martha's smile disappeared.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for Aria to notice.

The older woman's hand unconsciously closed around the small silver cross hanging from her neck.

"It used to be popular."

"Used to?"

"The town council closed it."

"Because of the wildlife attacks?"

Silence.

Martha released the cross and forced another smile.

"There are safer places worth photographing."

It wasn't an answer.

Before Aria could ask another question, Martha picked up a tray of freshly baked bread.

"If you'll excuse me..."

She disappeared into the kitchen.

Daniel waited until she was gone.

"People around here don't enjoy talking about the forest."

"I've noticed."

"They have their reasons."

"And those reasons are?"

He opened the front door for her.

"You'll have to ask someone else."

---

After unpacking, Aria decided to explore before sunset.

She never liked photographing unfamiliar places from behind a car window.

Walking helped her understand them.

Pine Ridge wasn't large.

Within twenty minutes she'd wandered through nearly every street.

Children raced bicycles along quiet sidewalks.

An elderly couple shared ice cream beneath an oak tree.

A young mother laughed as her little boy chased pigeons across the town square.

She lifted her camera repeatedly and click, click, click. Every photograph captured another peaceful moment.

Then... Something changed.

A hardware store owner flipped his sign to CLOSED. Across the street, a café began stacking chairs inside. Parents called children home. One after another. Almost hurriedly. Within minutes, the streets began emptying.

Aria checked her watch. Five forty-seven. Far too early. Curiosity led her into the only diner still open. The waitress smiled politely.

"Table for one?"

"Please."

She chose a seat beside the window. While pretending to study the menu, she couldn't help overhearing two men seated in the next booth.

"They found another campsite."

The older man kept his voice low.

His companion looked up sharply.

"Empty?"

The first man hesitated.

"Not exactly."

"What do you mean?"

"There was blood."

Silence.

The younger man swallowed.

"The sheriff still saying wolves?"

"What else can he say?"

Neither man spoke again.

They paid their bill.

Left cash on the table.

Walked out.

Aria watched them disappear through the window.

Something wasn't right here.

---

By the time she stepped outside, dusk had settled over Pine Ridge.

The warm afternoon had vanished.

A cold breeze drifted down from the mountains.

As she headed back toward the inn, something caught her eye. A large wooden noticeboard stood outside the sheriff's office Community announcements, she assumed Instead...

Every inch of it was covered with missing-person posters. Young faces, Old faces, Couples, Hunters, Campers, A park ranger.

Some posters had faded with age. Others still looked new. One had been circled in red market. Across the bottom someone had written four uneven words.

They Never Found Him.

A chill crawled down Aria's spine.

Almost without thinking, she lifted her camera.

Click.

The sound echoed through the unusually quiet street. A door slammed. She looked over. Then two other doors slammed. Shopkeepers hurried inside. Curtains were pulled shut. Locks clicked into place.

An elderly man passed her carrying two grocery bags. He slowed just long enough to speak.

"You should head inside."

She frowned.

"Why?"

He glanced toward the forest. Fear flashed across his face.

"If you value your life..."

His voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"...don't stay outside after sunset."

Before she could ask another question, he hurried away.

Aria stood alone in the middle of the street.

The town had emptied.

Every instinct urged her to return to the inn.

Then she heard it.

A long...

Haunting howl drifted through the mountains.

The sound rolled across the forest like a warning carried on the wind.

Another howl answered.

Then another.

and several more.

The hairs on the back of Aria's neck stood upright.

Her fingers tightened around her camera.

She had photographed wolves before.

This sounded different. Older. Almost mournful.

She slowly backed toward the inn without taking her eyes off the dark line of trees surrounding Pine Ridge.

She didn't know why.

But for the first time since arriving...

She felt as though something hidden beyond those woods had become aware of her.

Somewhere deep inside the forest...

Something stopped moving.

The square emptied faster than Aria had ever seen.Parents called for their children. Shopkeepers quietly pulled customers inside before locking their doors. The cheerful buzz that had filled Main Street only minutes ago dissolved into hurried footsteps and worried whispers. No one screamed. No one panicked. It was the kind of silence that came from people who had lived through this before.Darius turned to Daniel. "Where?""About five miles east of Miller's Creek."Victor's jaw tightened. "Who found him?""The morning patrol.""Witnesses?"Daniel shook his head."None."Victor looked at Darius. "We're leaving.""I'm coming with you," Aria said. Both men turned toward her."No," they answered together. She frowned."You didn't even let me finish.""I didn't need to," Victor replied."You've got to stop doing that.""And you've got to stop volunteering for dangerous situations.""I wasn't volunteering. I was asking.""You were absolutely volunteering."Before Aria could argue, Darius s

"So... you're the outsider everyone's talking about."The man's voice wasn't unfriendly, but it carried the kind of confidence that made people instinctively step aside. He looked at Aria as though he already knew enough about her to form an opinion.Aria met his gaze. "Should I be flattered... or worried?"One corner of his mouth lifted."That depends.""On what?""Whether the stories are true."She folded her arms. "You'll have to be more specific. Apparently there are quite a few stories."Darius let out a quiet sigh."Victor.""So you do remember my name.""I was hoping today would stay peaceful.""So was I."Victor glanced back at Aria."I've heard you ask a lot of questions.""I like knowing what's going on.""So do I.""Then maybe you can explain why everyone keeps treating me like I've walked into a classified military operation."A few people nearby suddenly became very interested in the fruit stand across the street. • A HUMAN MATE FOR THE ALPHA TWINS    The silence before

The square wasn't empty. It's simply... paused. A moment ago, children had been racing after a runaway chicken while their parents laughed from the sidewalk. Now conversations faded one by one, as though someone had quietly turned the volume down on the entire town. Aria lowered her camera. "Did something happen?"Darius didn't answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the tree line beyond the last row of buildings. Across the street, Mr. Jenkins whistled sharply. His old sheepdog, which had been happily sniffing around a flower bed moments earlier, came running without hesitation. Even the animal seemed uneasy."You noticed it too?" Aria asked.Darius nodded once."The dogs always do."She looked around again.Mrs. Alvarez had stopped arranging pastries in her display window. The violinist who'd been playing near the fountain quietly packed away his instrument. Nobody looked frightened, but everyone seemed... alert."What are they waiting for?""I'm hoping it's nothing."She glanced

The walk into town took longer than it should have. Not because Pine Ridge was large, but because Darius couldn't seem to take five steps without someone stopping him.A little boy raced across the street with a loaf of bread tucked under one arm."Darius!"The boy nearly ran into him before skidding to a stop."My mom said to tell you she made too much peach pie."Darius folded his arms."She says that every time.""I know.""And somehow there's never any pie left when I get there."The boy grinned."That's because Uncle Ben eats half of it.""I knew it."The boy laughed and sprinted away before Darius could say another word. Aria watched him disappear around the corner."So..."Darius looked at her."So?""You weren't exaggerating.""About what?""Everyone really does know you."He shrugged as though it wasn't unusual."It's a small town.""Small enough for random children to deliver pie messages?"He laughed."That wasn't random.""It looked random.""My life usually does."She smi

  • A HUMAN MATE FOR THE ALPHA TWINS    Smiles before sunset

The following morning, Pine Ridge looked nothing like the town Aria had seen the day before.Golden sunlight spilled over the rooftops, children raced bicycles down Main Street, and the smell of fresh bread drifted from the bakery on the corner. Somewhere, a radio played an old country song while someone sang along terribly enough to make a few passersby laugh. If she hadn't witnessed the fear that settled over the town every evening, she would have believed Pine Ridge was the safest place on earth. She stepped out onto the estate's front porch with her camera hanging around her neck. The cool mountain air brushed against her face. For the first time since arriving in Arizona, she felt... lighter. Not happy. Not yet.But lighter."You actually slept."She turned.Darius leaned against one of the wooden pillars, holding two paper cups of coffee. His hair was still damp from a shower, and unlike the day before, he wasn't dressed in dark clothes.
