Esmeralda woke up to the beeping noise of the alarm clock by the stand of her bedroom. It was as if she had been awoken by something else, supernatural, or more likely because the alarm clock hadn't been what jolted her off sleep.

She groggily opened her eyes and took in her surroundings. She could see no clouds like the classics said heaven was to be covered in. Or perhaps she hadn't made it to heaven?

Her mind wandered to the reasons that might have caused it. She was a submissive wife and an obedient daughter-in-law and had lived her days slaving for others, others who had caused her death.

Shouldn't that have at least made her fit to be amongst those headed for the heavens instead of the dimly lit room sje wqa on that looked like a temporal housing to souls headed for hell.

"She should be alright after a day or two. And she needs to rest during that time too ma'am"

She heard a voice outside mutter with all concern.

It didn't sound devilish and had been laced with concern and his made Esmeralda question where she truly was as concern wasn't a thing to be found in the afterlife.

She forced her eyes open more and stared around her, eyes open unlike how they were before.

The wedding photos she saw on the wall were what made her stand up for he bed she lay on with immediate alacrity.

Extending her hand towards the cellphone on the stand beside the bed, she saw the date which read October 12, 2012.

There was no way that was happening or perhaps she was dreaming while in hell? She pinched herself hard wanting to wake up from her slumber but nothing happened.

She checked the phone again but it mistakenly fell from her hand and shattered. It wasn't in a good condition anyway and when she had touched it, the screen had already been in a disastrous state with bands being used to hold it in place.

She meant to walk out of the room but paused midway on her walk out.

That was the phone she had used five years ago and the bed she stood up from was the same one she had been for a day after she had a miscarriage and the year said 2012. Had she been reborn into her life five years ago?

She walked out of the door instinctively as if wanting to check something for herself as she had been lied to.

Walking up to the wall clock in the room and the white painting in the house, she knew.

Her eyes twitched when she saw her mother-in-law watching a lifestyle documentary and a little girl sat by the foot of her chair.

She walked up to the girl and checked her face. It wasn't Ria. It was the first illegitimate daughter and Ria wasn't anywhere near the house.

Her mind wandered. If it was five years ago and his day was the day she awoke after her miscarriage, then it would be the same day Ria would be brought home. The same day her husband would bring home the child he had with her niece, for her to train, as everyone's maid she was.

"Esmeralda what are you doing here?" Her mother-in-law spoke the moment she tried her eyes and saw her standing by the foot of the chair she was on. Her voice was questioning and the glint from her eyes didn't spell good.

She didn't bother to give her an answer for she had been too stunned to speak. Instead, she walked over to the kitchen to prepare food or herself. She was hungry and that was all she could recall, nothing else mattered.

She walked over to the counter of the kitchen and began picking out little bits of ingredients she would use for her cooking when suddenly a young man no more than twenty five years of age walked up to her angrily.

"Esmeralda, you didn't wash the clothes I asked you to. Now what am I going to wear for my party?" He shouted at her angrily, with the impatience and condescending tone laced all over his voice.

She stared at him from head to toe without giving a reply to his question. It was her husband's junior brother. She stared around the house for his twin sister. She was to be somewhere around and she would chirp in her own very soon, so there was no reason for her to reply one of them first.

" Mathew. Don't scream at her that way. You know she just had a miscarriage"

" Mom, I asked her to wash these clothes before she had her miscarriage. But instead, she was lazy and didn't!" He answered back at his mother.

Esmeralda left them to talk to each other without giving a reply t any of them as she fixed herself a meal of scrambled eggs.

"Put that in here. I'm so hungry and starving. Why didn't you cook yesterday before you had the miscarriage? I had to survive the night with junk" Finally, Jared's sister finally came with a plate in hand dropped for her to dish the scrambled eggs she had just finished preparing into.

Esmeralda didn't look in her direction nor in her face. She acted as if she was invincible and hadn't seen anyone talking to her as she dished out the food from the pan into her own dish and walked over to the dining by the side of the kitchen to eat.

"Huh? Didn't you hear what I said?" She bellowed while walking towards Esmeralda with the dish she held.

"What is it?" Her mother questioned.

"Mom don't interfere!" She screamed at her.

"Esmeralda didn't you hear what I said? I asked you to dish this for me and here you are eating? Have you forgotten your place in this household?"

But Esmeralda didn't give any replies. Not even one and this annoyed the girl more. The fact that she hadn't obeyed her or that she was giving her the silent treatment.

Yvette proceeded to walk closer to the seat where she was seated in.

"The moment you come close to this table will make today be the last you spend in this house" Esmeralda blurted and the girl paused, so did her mother and brother who stared in their direction.

Esmeralda's voice was firm enough for them to know that it wasn't the same coward they knew that stood before them.

" What did you just say to me?" Yvette questioned after what seemed like a momentarily silence had taken over the entire room.

"You heard me properly, Yvette Castillo" she answered back while taking the last spoon of the scramble eggs.

"Mom!! She finished the food herself and didn't even fix breakfast!!"

" You know she just had a miscarriage..after she's done resting, she will do the chores and make food.." her mother tried convincing her, too vested in the documentary she was watching to take her eyes off.

Esmeralda stood up from the table without picking up her plate she has eaten with and walked over to the living room, sitting adjacent her mother-in-law when she picked up he remote controller from the table and switched the channel to a movie.

Her mother-in-law turned to stare at her and the impudence of her switching the channel.

Her eyes were fiery red and her children gathered by her side to now what was wrong with Esmeralda. Or perhaps her miscarriage had made her lose her manners and forget her place in the household?

"Like you said, I just had a miscarriage. What are you waiting for before you'd help your daughter-in-law out with the house cleaning?" Esmeralda asked while removing the face skincare mask she had over her face to behold the angry gaze on her face, but it was masked by an etch of surprise that was soon spreading all over.

" Are you speaking to my mother like that?" Yvette questioned.

" Clean the table I just finished eating on and do the dishes. Don't forget to fix breakfast afterwards if you're hungry and starving" she shot back at the girl.

"And you, Matthew. Yours would be to do the laundry. I have a pile of clothes needing to be washed. So while washing your clothes for your party, do make sure to include them. I want them sparkling white and clean and nothing less of that"

" Excuse me?" He answered with a scuff. Was she seriously speaking to them in such a way and manner? Has she forgotten her place in the house?

Esmeralda caught the eye of the little girl that had been staring at her since the moment she began speaking and she smiled sweetly at her.

" Amaya hunny, pick up your toys every single place you threw them and take them out of this living room immediately!" She smiled sweetly but the command in her tone was evident.

The door creaked open and in walked Jared and a three year old girl by his side, she smiled. The devil she was waiting for had just arrived.

Esmeralda struggled steadying her fingers on her steering as she parked her car in the parking lot. She was here…again. The neon lights and smell of alcohol filled her nose. And sultry dressed ladies were everywhere she looked, whichever direction she stared in.She heaved a sigh but it wasn't of relief. It was of pent up tension. Of pent up anger. The boil that she had carried in her heart since she was driving the car back to this place. She had contemplated between returning home, which had been where she was headed before, when she left Francis' room. But Jared had spoilt everything when he showed up and was shameless in how he boasted about his betrayal, embarrassing himself and her."What would you like to order ma'am?" A voice asked her. She raised her head as she thought of answers to give. What would she like to order? It was not as if they sold what she wanted to order. Not as if they could offer what she wanted to order. If they could then she would have purchased it a l

Jared didn't expect that Esmeralda would be able to get the car to start when he heard the engine noises. He turned towards her direction, no longer interested in the banter he had been having with Francis. Whereas Esmeralda was seething with rage. She let the silence consume her as she gripped the wheels of the steering, embarrassment washing all over her once again. That she was married to a man who was openly boasting about his multiple betrayals even while in her presence like it was a badge of honor? Like something he should be appraised and applauded for?"Esmeralda open the doors!" Jared began again, this time closer to the car as his fists pounded on the door.Esmeralda sneered. How meticulous he was in doing so gently for fear of damaging his thirty billion dollar worth luxury car but when it had come to handling her and her heart, he had treated her in the most shittiest way possible. One she would never even in her wildest dreams ever treat herself in a manner of, despit

With everything Francis had heard against his own will, he doubted Esmeralda had driven a car before. If Jared was this controlling and abusive towards her I public , then that meant that she probably had no freedom back at their home. "His car". He recalled his exact words. Esmeralda probably had none. No wonder no one knew about her on the media. No wonder no one knew that he was married and even if some people did, it would be just a few. He believed she was having issues with the controls and switches of the car and having difficulties with which one she was to press. He signaled one of his security men who was standing mid way from Jared, awaiting his instruction. Throw the intruder out. That was the only one to come. But Francis didn't signal him to do that. Instead he pointed towards the car. He pointed towards the woman in the car. The security wondered how he was to do that with Jared who was in front of her trying to bully her in to opening the car doors. But Franci

Francis walked towards the exit of his living room. He was utterly lost. Whoever it was making those loud and thudding noises at his gate. Esmeralda paused as well. She could tell something was wrong and off. Francis was in front of his exit, the exact place his workers had said that he didn't reach whenever he was in his robe and not dressed. Francis was reported to be a man of his word, so if he had fallen his own words, something was definitely up. "You can come back in if you are scared. I'll take you home later if you want" he said to her. Esmeralda smirked and stepped right inside her car. She had just come back from the dead. What was there fore her to be fearful of?Besides, he was the last person she would take help from. Who knew whether he was being cheeky with her with what he had said or trying to look for ways to irritate her again. He just seemed like one. A playboy A flirt. How could she have thought to use that man to teach her husband a lesson from the onst

"Was I wrong about him and what had happened last night?" Came Esmeralda's question to herself. Unlike what she believed about Francis undressing her he previous night and having his way with her, it appeared that it was one of his female workers that had some so. And not for the reason she had dreaded it being. She managed to mutter a "thank you ma'am" to the lady before she dragged her legs and continued walking towards the exit of the living room. Her hand went to cover her mouth as she felt embarrassed beyond calming. Flashbacks came from all angles. The slap, destroying his breakfast and even calling him a pervert. He had been right to demand an appreciation from her for saving her the previous night. If not for him, if another stranger had picked her up, then what she just found out to be a lie would have in fact happened to her. Or far more worse. She contemplated turning back to apologize to Francis. Her behavior had been uncalled for. And her words had been filed with

Back in the bathroom, Esmeralda could not recall anything that had happened the previous night no matter how hard she tried to. She fainted in the bar, yes, but apart from that, there was nothing else she could recall. Nothing peculiar. Not even of the pervert undressing her or having his way with her while she was drunk. Perhaps that was because he drugged her? Perhaps after she had fainted or before she did. It wouldn't be hard for a man of his caliber to get his wishes done. And for even a meagre sum of money, the bartender wouldn't mind adding drugs to the vodka he had sold to her. "But be honest Esmeralda, wasn't that the reason why you came here?" An inner voice told her. "Why I came here?" She repeated. She didn't come there for that. She just came to see Francis. No, not exactly to see him because there was no use of seeing someone who didn't know her. But on the contrary, he had called her by her name which meant that he knew whom she was. Perhaps, or perhaps not. A

Francis stared at Esmeralda from the window he sat close to. She was sound asleep and didn't sob in her sleep like she did earlier anymore. Her nose had become free too, he had applied a balm on her nostrils the previous night due to how hard she struggled with breathing due to mucous. He couldn't believe that she was finally close to him. So close by and in his bed. He had anticipated her arrival at the bar the previous day. It was the only plausible place he could think of her coming to find him in. Following what had happened. And even though he wasn't sure of her arrival, he still waited behind and in the end, his patience had paid off when she arrived few minutes later after he did. He quickly faced the windows view of the city when he noticed her turning in the bed. He couldn't afford selling himself out of of she noticing that he had been staring at her ever since. Esmeralda writhed in the bed. Her eyes were still groggy from all she drank the previous night. She wonder

The bar reeked of all manners of alcohol and fermented ethanol. Not like Esmeralda was expecting another thing. But she felt livid being here not out of her own violation but in a bid to prove something to someone whom while in her normal senses, she would have avoided. "What should I get for you ma'am?" A voice questioned as she settled herself into one of the chairs in front of the bartenders corner. "Oh me?" She muttered comely, unsure of what to order. She hadn't been to a bar before and neither had she taken alcohol. This environment all felt new to her. "We have Vodka, we have Italian fine wines, Champagne is available as well ma'am . We have different varieties of all fine drinks in the country, just make your order and I'll get one for you""Which one is the people's favorite?" She interjected his speech. She wasn't going to be naive and dumb at the same time. Since she didn't know what to order, she found it better to request for what others took. She couldn't risk bein

"Mom! What's happening?" Jared turned towards his mother and muttered , still unable to believe what was unfolding before him. Perhaps he was seeing wrong or better still having an itchy ear to have heard that from Esmeralda. Esmeralda of all people. The fact that it was from her was what made it weirder. She didn't even care to explain herself to them despite seeing the confusion written all over their faces. But she didn't care. Not even a bit. Wasn't he the one who had brought in a little girl the other day? Introducing her to his wife as his child and newest addition to their family. What audacity!! What manner of a man was he who never realized right from wrong when it came to him but quick to notice when others around him were in err. She shaked her head. She wasn't in the mood to brood over her past. Or rather her future or what would remain of it if she didn't act now. This was her time to correct them before she would find herself in the situation that had sent her her
