Chapter 1 Seven Years of Betrayal

Penulis: Lena
I opened my mouth, but my throat felt completely blocked. It took me a long while to finally ask, "They got married… last year?"

No one answered.

I knew every face in that private room. We had shared meals, gone out together, and sent each other gifts during holidays. Yet now, every single one of them had their heads lowered. None of them dared to meet my eyes.

Finally, Gavin Oakley spoke. "Yes."

I stared at him blankly, unable to process it.

My cousin Gavin had grown up alongside me. When we were children, whenever someone bullied me, he would always step in front of me. Whenever a teacher scolded me, he would buy me candy on the way home from school to cheer me up.

I had always believed that anyone in this world could lie to me, but Gavin never would.

Yet now, he had chosen to stand on their side.

So when Charles Grayson had said he was going on a business trip last year, during those few days he was supposedly away, he had actually gone to marry Diana Sayer.

I felt like such an idiot.

I had been afraid he was working too hard, so I had ordered him a late-night meal and had it delivered to his office. I had even worried about him and told him that he should not push himself so hard anymore.

Thinking about it now made my chest ache, as though someone had carved a piece of my heart out with their bare hands.

I turned to Gavin. "What did you mean when you said my adoptive parents knew?"

He did not dare look at me.

He merely gave a quiet hum. "They were afraid you wouldn't be able to handle it, so they never told you."

My fingertips went numb. I could barely remain seated.

My adoptive parents had known too. So it had not just been Charles deceiving me. Even the people closest to me had helped them keep me in the dark.

I finally understood why everyone had seemed so calm that night. They had known this day would come.

Charles looked at me, his tone so even that it bordered on cold. "Juliet, I know this wasn't fair to you."

I stared at him, my eyes burning. "Then, why did you still do it?"

His brows furrowed, as though he did not like the way I was speaking to him. "Well, making a scene won't change anything, would it?"

Diana sighed as well. "Juliet, Charles has made it up to you in so many ways over the years. Your sister's medical treatment, your job transfer, even the house you're living in—he gave it all to you. Everyone has been considerate of your feelings, too. Think about it carefully."

Someone beside her immediately chimed in. "Exactly. Weren't you the happiest one of all?"

I listened to them and felt cold all over.

As it turned out, to them, I was the fifth wheel who benefited the most—the one who had gotten everything. Thus, their lies had been "kindness," and I was apparently supposed to be grateful for the generosity.

Charles leaned back against his chair as though a tremendous burden had finally been lifted from his shoulders. His voice was indifferent. "Diana and I had a wedding, too. I'll hold another wedding for you. Sounds fair, right?"

For a moment, I almost laughed.

Fair?

The sarcasm slipped out before I could stop it. "You really want to have it both ways, don't you?"

Charles' expression darkened. "I'm giving you a chance to keep your dignity, Whitfield."

I let out a cold laugh.

Dignity? Would it really be dignified when everyone would attend our wedding knowing about his love story with Diana? Was I not enough of a joke already?

Diana's tears began to fall. Her voice was soft and hoarse. "Juliet, I know you hate me. But the baby is innocent."

I looked at her, my chest aching with a suffocating pain. "What about me? Haven't I been innocent all these seven years too?"

Her face went pale. Her lips moved, but no words came out.

I picked up the glass of alcohol beside me and threw it directly into Charles' face.

The liquor streamed down his jaw.

Diana shot to her feet in fright, screaming my name, but I kept my eyes fixed on Charles. "I don't want the dignity you're offering me. And I won't help make your happily-ever-after complete, either. I hope you two shameless bastards stay together for the rest of your lives."

With that, I grabbed my bag and walked out.

Chaos erupted behind me. I heard Gavin calling my name. Someone tried to stop me. Someone else accused me of being too extreme.

But I did not turn around.

Not once.

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 10 Too Late

Charles had lost a lot of weight. The calm confidence that had once made him seem so unshakable, as though he could effortlessly keep everyone around him under control, had been worn away little by little over the past two years.Perhaps because he saw that I was not turning around and walking away, he seemed to breathe a little easier."Are you doing well now?" he asked."Pretty well.""Are you really?" He looked at me as though he couldn't quite believe it."I really am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, sending fallen leaves skittering across the pavement.Charles remained silent for a long time before finally speaking. "I used to think you wouldn't really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd eventually stay right where you were."I listened without responding.Because he was right. The person I had been back then really had been too willing to endure. But I was not that person anymore. He lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Is there really not e

Two years later, Rosalie and I returned home. When the plane landed, the sky outside was bright. I sat in my seat and watched as the familiar city slowly spread out beyond the window. I felt none of the breathless misery I had felt when I left, nor the uneasiness I had imagined I would feel upon returning.I was simply calm.It was as though I had taken a long detour, only to find myself standing here again.Scott was already waiting at the airport exit. He did not bring any flowers or arrange any elaborate welcome. He simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "Tired from the flight?"Rosalie hugged her cup and quietly said, "Thank you."He smiled and casually opened the car door for us.During the drive, he did not mention anything about the past. He only told us that he had already arranged a place for us to stay. It was close to both the hospital and the company. If we were not comfortable there, we could change places. There was no rush.I sat in the back seat, watc

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 8 Starting Over

After Rosalie had spent a full year receiving treatment abroad, her condition finally stabilized. She still needed to continue rehabilitation, and her walking was still not quite back to normal, but at least she no longer woke up in a panic throughout the night or trembled whenever she heard certain names. On the day of her follow-up examination, the doctor closed her medical record and told me, "Her body will recover gradually, and so will her emotions."I sat in the chair and let out a long breath. For the entire year, I had been wound tight. The night before every follow-up appointment, I could barely sleep. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Rosalie to make sure her breathing was steady, her forehead was not too warm, and she had taken her medication on schedule.Once she could slowly start doing things on her own, I began taking on online freelance work. It did not pay much, but at least I no longer had to survive solely on what was left from sel

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 7 I Don't Want to See You

I had originally thought that once Charles failed to find me, enough time would pass and he would eventually give up. But I had underestimated him.…That day, I had just returned from the pharmacy with a bag of medicine in my hand. The moment I reached the hospital room, I saw a figure outside the door. He wore a black overcoat, his shoulders still held straight, but he had lost a considerable amount of weight.I stopped in my tracks.Charles saw me, too. Before I could say anything, Rosalie, who was lying on the hospital bed, suddenly went pale. Her fingers clenched tightly around the edge of the blanket, her breathing became erratic, and her shoulders began trembling uncontrollably.I hurried over, set the medicine on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the bed, blocking her from view. "What are you doing here?"Charles looked at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. "I came to see how you two were doing.""You've seen us. You can leave now."He did no

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 6 Slowly, Life Moved Forward

During the first month after I moved abroad, I barely got a full night's sleep.Rosalie's condition was worse than the doctors had initially expected. During the day, she seemed relatively calm, but something always went wrong at night. Sometimes she would lie there with her eyes closed, tears slipping down her cheeks as she repeated the same sentence over and over. "My sister isn't like that… She's not…"I would sit beside her bed, holding her hand and calling her name again and again, but she seemed unable to wake up no matter how hard I tried.During the day, I accompanied her to her examinations. At night, I stayed by her side. I was even afraid to stop and wash my face in case I missed something important. When we first arrived abroad, my command of the local language was not fluent enough for me to handle all the hospital procedures on my own. The medical terminology was especially difficult. Whenever the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen while frantically ta

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 5 The Truth Comes to Light

When Charles arrived at the hospital, the hospital room was already empty. The nurse looked up at him. "You're too late. The family just finished the paperwork, and the patient was transferred to another hospital.""Where?""I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that."He stood in the doorway, his expression growing grimmer by the second. He pulled out his phone and called my number. The only thing that came through the receiver was a mechanical female voice. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Next, he went to the place where I had been staying. The landlord was crouched by the doorway, sorting vegetables. When Charles asked about me, the landlord answered him without even looking up. "She already moved out. She already returned the keys. Didn't even have time to collect her deposit. She left in a hurry."Charles stood outside the empty apartment for a long time, unable to say a word. But the scandal back home did not die down just because I had left.At first, th
