Evelyn's Pov
The sound of a belt buckling around someone's waist disturbed my sleep. I slowly opened my eyes but was met with a sharp ray of sunlight, I squinted, rubbing my eyes with my hands.
My body still aches. All over.
I rolled in an attempt to avoid the sunlight but something felt strange. The bed was larger than mine, it felt softer and much more comfortable. I slowly opened my eyes only to see an imposing figure standing close to the window.
Sebastian.
His name crossed my mind. He was adjusting his cufflinks. I had not got a better view of him last night because of the atmosphere. He stood there, his back facing me. He turned, as if my piercing gaze was poking him.
Our eyes locked.
I didn’t know what to expect considering my head still aches from the excessive alcohol intake and last night still remained a blurred memory. The only thing that came to my mind were fragments of last night. The slow kisses, hands on my bare skin, his teeth on my neck, our sweat filled skin slamming against each other. I couldn’t put the pieces together.
However, his gaze was different, he wasn’t staring at me with those eyes he gave me last night. I felt uncomfortable, my grip tightened on the duvet as I pulled it closer to my chest covering my bare skin. Feeling embarrassed a bit and became self-aware of my insecurities.
“Get out!” He said in a calm tone but his voice was icy and indifferent.
Why the sudden indifference? I was speechless for the moment still trying to process everything—the event and our unplanned night together.
“This was a mistake. No one should know about this.” He said without staring at me, I wasn't regarded. His expression was unreadable.
“What do you mean?” I said, finally finding my voice.
“Did I stutter? I don't like repeating myself so don't make me do so.” He said, his gaze landing on me as he rested his back on a pillar, his hands crossed over his chest. He had a look of irritation written over his face.
“I don't understand. What happened last night? Did we?” I asked, I felt a slight headache trying to remember in details. I remember being offered a drink and having a discussion with someone. I think Ethan. I could still hear his voice behind my ears, his warm breath making me shiver. Sebastian let out a laugh that didn't come from his lungs.
“Don't pretend like you don't remember what happened between us,” he said. “Well it's better you don't remember; I don't want to have any connection with you and it's better you forget whatever happened last night. It was a mistake that would never reoccur.” He said, a smirk crawling up his lips.
“You took advantage of me!” I blurted out. The pieces started to add up, we had sex!
He didn't flinch, only letting out a laugh that seemed to mock me. “What do you mean I took advantage of you? It was….”
“I was drunk!” I yelled; I didn't let him finish whatever he had to say.
“Oh! So, you're just realizing you were drunk? Don't you remember the way you held my hands? The way you pulled me and screamed my name like it was a recitation?” He asked, his voice cold, slowly breaking my defense as I could feel the heat burning in my eyes.
“Men of your kind never take responsibility; you could have controlled yourself by not taking advantage of a vulnerable woman!” I yelled.
“Why drink so much when you know you can't handle a few glasses of wine?” He asked, rolling his eyes.
“You should mind your business!” I yelled with furrowed brows.
“Really? And let someone else eat you up? Has anyone ever told you that you have a good sex speech?” He said in a tone that almost felt like he was mocking me. “You know that thing you do with your lips around my dick? You were a pro!” He said, letting out a loud laugh.
I felt anger boiling through my skin. I had goosebumps all over, goosebumps of irritation and anger. I lifted a pillow and threw it at him but it only bounced back at the impact of his arms.
“Shut up you bastard! Stop it! Stop talking!” I yelled; my hands pressed tightly onto my ears.
“Listen Bunny,” he said, releasing his hands from his chest. “Whatever happened last night is all in the past. It's our mistake and we should both go our separate ways and live like it never happened. Well, unless you want me to pay you off.” He said with his right brow raised as a smirked appeared.
His words stringed. “I'm not a prostitute and I don't need your money, you monster!” I lifted a pillow, throwing it at him—again. “You bastard! How dare you take advantage of me? Do I look like a whore who you can discard the next morning?” I yelled, frustration and anger livid through my voice.
“Oh honey, you are more than a whore, at least you know how to fuck! Like I said, last night was a mistake and you should move on too!” He said, grabbing his wallet from the bed stand in an attempt to leave.
“Go away!” I yelled. “I hope we never cross paths again because I'm going to make sure you pay!” I yelled.
He didn't flinch. He didn't look back. “I handle all currency sweetheart and I'm looking forward to seeing which you're going to pay me in,” he said, smirking as he shut the doors behind me.
I sat there, my anger getting the best of me. I held my hair, dragging it in frustration. I wanted to yell it all out. All my pains, anger and frustration. I felt helpless.
A notification popped up on my phone screen. It was from my friend Dorothy. I picked up my phone. I was hesitant, but I opened her message.
“Where are you? You literally ghosted me at last night's event”
I threw the phone on the bed after reading through it. My hands hitting the bed as I pressed a pillow onto my face letting out silent screams.
Ding! Ding!
Another notification popped up on my phone screen pulling me out of my thoughts. It was a message from Dorothy, again.
I picked up my phone.
“ANSWER ME!”
The message was written in bold capitals with an exclamation mark. I stared at it for a moment until the words blurry. I was about to toss the phone away when another notification came in. I was going to ignore it but I couldn't.
“ANSWER ME EVELYN!!! SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR FATHER!!”
Not again.
Evelyn's PovThe ball wasn't what I had expected. It was more than I expected. The last time I entered a place this luxurious was like ages ago. The room was filled with people whose clothes were expensive enough to solve my problem.I couldn't fit in. I didn't fit in.I stood there watching Dorothy conversing with her co-workers. This place felt isolating. I wanted to go, I felt like leaving but I couldn't. The thoughts of my father's medical bill and my mother's looming doom kept me rooted to the ground.“This is my friend Evelyn,” Dorothy said. I didn't notice when Dorothy and her friend Ethan had walked up to me. I was lost in my thoughts. Ethan smiled; his eyes locked onto mine.“Hello. I'm Ethan. It's nice to meet you,” Ethan said, stretching forth his hands for a handshake. He wore a smile that almost felt like a mask—he was literally wearing a mask after all it was a masquerade ball.“I'm Evelyn, like Dorothy said.” I said, I didn't shake, I left his hand hanging in the hair.
Evelyn’s Pov“Hello Eve. I've found a solution!” Dorothy said on the other end of the phone. The cold air slapped my face as I walked down the alley.“What do you mean?” I asked. I wondered what Dorothy was up to again. I knew she was always the type to come up with a solution for every problem but raising the $350,000 or even $450,000 that it has amounted to, thanks to the reckless action of my mother, seems like an impossible feat to be achieved in such a short time.“I need you to meet me at my apartment,” Dorothy answered.“I'm already on my way dear.” I said, hailing a taxi. The driver stopped, parking as I tossed myself inside the vehicle, closing the door behind me. “I would be there in minutes.” I said.“Okay.”“Your hair is a mess. Were you into a fight or something?” Dorothy asked, her hand brushing into my hair as she stood closer to me.“It's quite a long story. I'll explain all that to you.” I said, we both walked to her living room as we sat down together.“Why don't you
Evelyn's PovI stood outside the hospital, the early morning air caressing me. It suddenly felt cold outside, colder than when I had arrived earlier. I took out my phone from my pocket just to see a message from my boss in my email. That's weird.I checked the date and, it wasn't my pay day yet. so, what could the message be about?I opened the message and my heart dropped to my stomach.‘You've been released from your duty here at Cole's Restaurant. Your paycheck would be wired 48 hours from now.’ I read through in my mind.I didn't know how to react. I had a lot of questions roaming in my head, questions left unanswered. Why? What happened? Did I do something wrong? My phone rang, distracting my attention. My phone has been buzzing a lot since today. Could this day get any worse? I looked at the screen and it was Dorothy calling. I picked it up.“Hello” I said.“Hey Eve, how is your dad? I heard his condition is very bad. Are you at the hospital already? How are you feeling?” She as
Evelyn's PovThree Weeks AgoI stood in front of the bathroom mirror staring at my sleep ridden face. The only sound occupying the space was the continuous outflow of water from the faucet. I had a long day at work the other night and I barely had enough sleep. When would I eventually end this cycle? Waking up earlier and going to bed very late. I turned off the tap, staring at myself at the mirror as silence occupied the bathroom. My hair was a mess. It looked like a rat’s nest. A human rat’s nest, I think.I shove my fingers into my hair untangling the tangled strands.“Look much better,” I muttered to myself.A notification popped up on my phone screen jolting me out of my thoughts. It was a message from my mother. That was strange. Mom never sent me messages. She was the kind of person that grew up in the 90’s that wasn't really smart enough to know how to operate a smartphone so, she he only called me.I was hesitant at first but the quirkiness of the message compelled me to open
