KICKING SECRET

The sun sat soft and golden over the wide open pasture. A gentle breeze stirred the wild grass, brushing over like a whisper.

Savannah sat cross-legged in the tall grass, tugging at a single blade and chewing it like a calm cow. Her strange craving had become a ritual of sorts.

Zayn approached her slowly, his footsteps crunching dry earth and brittle grass. Somehow, she sensed he was the one approaching, she didn’t look up.

“Should I bring you a salt shaker next time?” Zayn asked teasingly.

“Already tried it. Made the grass worse.” She didn’t even look at him.

He chuckled lightly as he sat beside her, not too close.

“You followed me.”

“I was worried you’d turn into a cow. And run away again.”

She ripped another blade and chewed, oblivious of his concerned eyes following her every move.

“I didn’t run.”

“He doesn’t even know you’re alive.”

Her chewing stopped. “Good.”

Zayn watched her, his jaw tight. He ran fingers through his hair.

“You’re car

VISITORSavannah stepped into her room first, Zayn a heavy shadow behind her. The air felt wrong, colder, like someone had left the window open. Her eyes swept the space. At first glance, everything was in place: bed neatly made, curtains drawn, her few possessions stacked in quiet order. But then she saw it, the curtain rod tilted just slightly, a thin ribbon of damp air curling in from the cracked frame. She crossed the room, fingertips grazing the sill. The latch was undone.“Did you leave this open?” Zayn asked. She didn’t answer, too busy noticing the faint smudge of mud on the wooden floor below the window, the kind no one in the house would’ve left. Her gaze darted to the dresser. The top drawer gaped open just an inch, enough for her to see that the folded scarf inside had been pushed aside. She yanked it open.“Savannah…” Zayn’s voice dropped low.The scarf was gone from its original shape, and beneath it, the letters had been shifted. Whoever had been searching there had bee

TRACKED DOWNSavannah stood frozen in the field path, her hands balled into fists by her sides. Her cardigan flapped in the breeze, somewhat like a warning. Then came the rapid footsteps. Zayn appeared around the bend, shirt damp with sweat, earbuds looped around his neck, breathing heavy.“Savannah?”She took a step back with her eyes narrowed. “Where were you?”“Running like I said I would. What’s wrong?”“Don’t play dumb.”“What are you talking about?” Zayn was confused.“The letter, Zayn. The one I didn’t even finish. The one I kept locked in the desk drawer with two others.”“You think I took it.” He was offended by the sudden accusation. He knit his eyebrows, waiting for an answer, but all he got was her silence.“Wow.” He was hurt.“Don’t ‘wow’ me. You’ve known where I was and didn’t tell him. You sat on it. You don’t get to be the confused one now.”He finally stepped forward. “Savannah, I didn’t take your letter. I haven’t even seen it.”“Don’t lie to me. You were in the hall

ENDGAME It wasn’t silence that made the house feel empty. It was the echo, the kind that came from a lack of witnesses. No one to laugh at the wrong time. No one to argue about which way the knives should face in the drawer. Every light turned on felt like a lie, like he was trying to convince the walls he wasn’t alone. The floors gleamed like no one had ever lived there. All that lingered were the memories, too stubborn to leave. He could summon the world with a phone call, maybe buy a city with a signature. But the one thing he couldn’t summon was warmth. Javyn sat cross-legged on the floor of his dimly lit room. He had pulled out the dusty old chessboard. Just the sight of it alone reminded him of her. The first girl he ever loved. She mysteriously appeared in her life, only to vanish. Her reappearance years later had been a nightmare. It had remained there since Deysha left. He stared at it, unmoving. His phone buzzed once, lighting up his cheeks, but he didn’t check i

NEW LIFE “What’s taking him so long?” Mrs. Kent wondered out loud. Zayn had made it to Savannah’s hiding spot just as she turned around, facing the wall. “I can still see you.” “Oh wow, so you’re visually impaired…” “Do I know you?” They both heard approaching footsteps, a relief to Savannah. “I see you’ve already met Vivienne.” Mrs. Kent chimed in excitedly. “She’s quite scared, have to be patient with her.” “Oh…” “Vee, this is Big pop’s son, Zayn. He’ll be staying with us for a while.” Savannah lowered her head as she turned around. He immediately recognized her. “Vivienne?” He nodded, quite amused by the new name. “You two better get along. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.” With that she left for the place she loved most in the house. “Great.” That was her only reaction to being stuck with Zayn. “Vivienne? Seriously?” “Like you’d have a better name after a week of being unconscious.” “You alright though? Javyn’s been worried about you.” “Ho

STRATEGY As an accomplished menace to society, a threat to everyone but himself, Abel fell asleep soundly after a drinking spree throughout the night. His naked body was spread on the carpeted floor without a care in the world. Lost in a deep slumber he would never wake up from. Even The Angel of Death could fall for a trap meant to lure him to his grave. The young lady that kept him company that night closed in on his stiff body. It was cold, a temperature common in lifeless bodies. She sipped on her wine once more before making the panicked call on his phone. She was an escort he’d brought back home for a nice time. She couldn’t understand why he kept running out of breath, so they fell asleep. She never heard him leave the bed let alone fall to the ground. That morning sirens rang outside Abel’s home, his safest hideout. They knocked on the door to no response. Where was the lady that made that call? Soon, the authorities he had spent years running away from were breaki
