Chapter 3

Author: Flying Saltfish
Vincent's entire body went rigid. He stood frozen in place, too stunned to even breathe. His gaze shifted between Samara and Zachary, hoping to see something in their expressions that would clue him in on what was going on.

Samara's hug suffocated him. He could feel the heat from her body seeping through their clothes, but it only made his heart feel colder. He couldn't understand why she was suddenly being so intimate with him. This was nothing like the woman he remembered.

"Ms. Copeland, what are you…" Vincent couldn't help but ask, his voice hoarse and quivering ever so slightly.

Samara slowly released him and stepped back. The raw emotion in her eyes gradually faded, replaced by something far more complicated. She looked at him as though searching for something or hesitating for some particular reason.

"Vincent, can we talk alone?" she abruptly asked, her voice more gentle than Vincent had ever heard in his previous life.

His heart tightened. He had no idea what game she was playing. After glancing at Walt and Zachary, he nodded.

"Alright."

Walt and Zachary were left behind in the living room, both looking less than happy. Zachary's gaze was full of discontent, while Walt appeared anxious. They both watched as Vincent and Samara headed upstairs and disappeared around the bend in the staircase.

Vincent's room was modestly furnished and kept impeccably tidy. Along the walls were bookshelves packed with books and game design magazines.

Samara's eyes roamed over the entirety of the room before landing on the computer. Pointing at it, she asked curiously, "You're still working on that even though you're sick?"

Vincent nodded before walking over to the desk, with the game he was developing still shown on the computer screen. He stood there in silence, looking at Samara as he waited for her to speak.

She stepped closer to the computer and carefully examined the design sketches and code on the screen. Her brows creased thoughtfully. After a moment, she turned back around to face him.

"You want to develop this game yourself?"

Vincent nodded. "That's right. It has always been my dream."

Samara fell silent for a while before saying slowly, "I can help you."

Vincent was stunned to hear her make such an offer to him. He studied her expression carefully, hoping to find an answer to explain her reaction, but her gaze was unreadable.

"Why?" His voice was low and guarded.

Smiling faintly, Samara walked over to the window to stare at the view. In a gentle but firm voice, she replied, "Because I believe in you."

Vincent stared at her from behind, his heart clenching at her words. He couldn't bring himself to trust her so easily, so he chose to refuse her offer without any hesitation.

"Thank you for your faith in me, Ms. Copeland, but I don't need any help right now."

Samara turned around, her smile meaningful as she looked at Vincent. "Don't be so quick to reject my offer. Think about it first."

With that said, she left the room.

Vincent stayed in his room and remained distracted the entire afternoon. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't understand why Samara was suddenly treating him this way.

Every time he recalled the misunderstandings and suffering that plagued his relationship with her in their previous life, he felt a chill in his heart.

In the evening, Walt summoned Vincent to his study and calmly announced, "Vincent, Ms. Copeland has officially proposed a marriage alliance between the Harpers and the Copelands today. She hopes to have the engagement confirmed as soon as possible, and she specifically wants to marry you."

Vincent's mind went blank.

How was that possible?

In his previous life, they hadn't gotten engaged until three months after they first met. Even then, it had only happened because Mabel had taken a liking to his responsible and steady character. Samara had only begrudgingly agreed to the engagement.

So why had everything changed this time?

Vincent grasped at his wits and shared his plans with Walt. "Dad, I… I've been thinking about studying abroad for a few years. Do you think it's possible… to hold off on the marriage?"

He wanted to delay things for as long as possible.

Walt sighed. He understood how Vincent felt about this situation, but the family's interests—and the alliance with the Copelands—were just as important to him.

"I know what you're thinking, Vincent, but the Copelands are firm about this. Besides, Samara seems very satisfied with you. Our entire family will be benefiting from the marriage alliance with the Copelands."

Vincent said nothing. He knew Walt had a point, but the pain he suffered in his previous life left him with an uncontrollable sense of fear.

He couldn't let this happen. There was no way he could marry Samara.

Once Vincent was in the car, his gaze remained fixed on the diary. His fingers danced rapidly on the lock as he tried out passwords, but to no avail. Frustration and anger began to surge within him. What was the password? What had Sienna recorded in it? Could it have anything to do with his identity? A string of questions raced through his mind, refusing to go away.Vincent patiently tried again and again until his phone rang abruptly, disrupting his thoughts. Tristan's name flashed across the screen. The corners of Vincent's lips curved upward involuntarily, and he answered the call. "Have you reached the airport, Tristan?""I'm rushing to the boarding gate right now, Vince." Tristan sounded as if he didn't want to leave."I'm going to be abroad for quite a while this time. You'd better take good care of yourself. Don't throw yourself into work too much. After all, no one would dare to say anything to you even if you just lazed around. I don't want to see you all frail and si

Vincent pushed Zachary away and yelled furiously, "What are you doing?"Vincent swiftly crouched down and picked up the pieces of the shattered frame. He carefully took out the photo inside. Sienna was smiling tenderly in the photo, and it felt as if she were expressing how much she missed him."It's just a lousy photo. What's so precious about it? She's dead, and this is now nothing but a worthless piece of paper!" Zachary said snidely. Vincent stood up, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at Zachary. Zachary had been sly and manipulative in his previous life, but he had never trampled on Sienna's belongings like this. "Say that again!"Zachary pretended not to hear him. He threw the box of Sienna's belongings into the trash can, as if it was nothing but trash. Vincent's temper reached a breaking point. He punched Zachary in the face, the force of it nearly making Zachary lose his balance."Vincent, you hit me again!" Zachary yelled in disbelief as he clutched his bleeding nose.

On the way back home, Vincent still had not calmed down.He kept telling himself that Marisol had been crazy and that she couldn't be trusted. Yet her words kept ringing in his ears, like a spell he couldn't get rid of.If what Marisol had said was true, why hadn't Sienna ever mentioned his biological father when she was alive? Why hadn't his so-called biological father ever made an appearance? But if Marisol was lying, what was she trying to achieve by doing this? Vincent's thoughts were becoming more and more chaotic. He had planned on going straight back to the Harper residence to ask Walt, but he was afraid that his father would rebuke him for believing a stranger's words so easily. After agonizing over what to do, Vincent decided to go home and see how things went.Ethan drove him back to the Harper residence. All Vincent could think about was getting to the bottom of things, so he went straight to Walt's study on the second floor. The housekeeper saw him and said quickly,

The note read, "I'll be waiting for you at the corner on the third floor."It was a short sentence, but it piqued Vincent's curiosity. Who was she? Why did she want to meet him? Did she have a motive? A string of questions ran through his mind. After a few seconds, Vincent made a decision. He glanced at Ethan behind him and smiled lightly. "I have a slight headache. Go and buy me a box of painkillers. I'll wait for you up ahead."He spoke calmly and pointed at a bench in the distance. Ethan looked discomfited. "Um…"Vincent's expression darkened, and his lips curled into an icy smile. "What's the matter? I'm Samara's husband. Don't I have the authority to give you orders?"His tone was chilly this time. Ethan looked around and was forced to give in. "Please wait a moment. I'll be right back."After he left, Vincent casually sat on the bench and pretended to scroll through his phone. When he saw Ethan run into the pharmacy, his lips twitched, and he got up to head for the t

After dinner, Shane held Vincent's hand tightly and insisted on sleeping with him.Unexpectedly, Samara agreed. This made Vincent breathe a sigh of relief. When he thought of the fact that he wouldn't have to share a bed with Samara that night, a slight smile appeared on his face. He failed to notice the sly gleam that flashed in Samara's eyes. When night fell, Vincent took Shane to the guest room and played with him until almost 10:00 pm. Finally, Shane washed up and got into bed. Vincent was also tired, so he lay down beside Shane and drifted off to sleep. He was half-asleep when he vaguely sensed footsteps drawing closer, but he was too exhausted to open his eyes. Samara silently went over to the bed and looked at the two of them lying there, fast asleep. She smiled gently. She carefully picked Shane up and put him down on the bed in her own room. When she returned to the guest room, Vincent had already opened his eyes.He looked at Samara, who was standing beside the bed

When Vincent thought of the fact that he might bump into Samara at the office, he decided not to go and shut himself in the study instead. He had learned about the Jensens' recent situation through Tristan, and he had been helping them resolve the problem remotely. He only went downstairs that evening, when the driver drove Shane over."Vincent!" As soon as Shane walked through the door and caught sight of Vincent, he raced over and hugged Vincent's leg tightly. "I missed you so much that I couldn't eat or sleep properly! Did you miss me?" His sweet little voice made a hint of a smile appear on Vincent's face. He ruffled Shane's hair. "Of course I missed you."Shane was delighted. He suddenly cocked his head to one side and stared at Vincent without blinking for a while. He asked, "Vincent, why do you always seem so unhappy? You're so handsome when you smile. You look even more handsome than the gym teacher at my kindergarten! Whenever Sammie sees a photo of you, she stares
